Is the British healthcare system better than the US? Yes, absolutely. We pay for it through a tax called National Insurance and then it is free at the point of care. We don’t get charged for GP or hospital appointments or any of the tests, scans that are needed to diagnose a condition. We also get free prescriptions in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and there is limited charge in England but pensioners, children and people with chronic conditions will get free prescriptions which is a big thing for people with multiple conditions who need lots of different medications. My cousin has lived in California for many years but he says he goes over the border into Mexico for his diabetic treatment. His wife passed away a few years ago from cancer and her treatment there was markedly different to the care patients get here where we have District Nurses and the Macmillan Nurses who give patients excellent care at home.
