I first became familiar with Dave's work in the GRP All Stars albums, and he doesn't disappoint here for a nanosecond. I liked the way he slowed the tempo in the last bar to build to the crescendo. Great to see the string bass, too!

What kind of kit? Doesn't look like a pearl or mapex. Is it a 90s slingy?

It doesn’t get better than this. I’ve been watching this one since it was played.

Amazing performance. Anyone who would criticize this masterpiece simply doesn’t know music as well as they think.

Gotta give a shoutout to the bass player as well. Absolutely stellar job locking up perfectly with all these different drummers with their distinctive styles.

If you're interested in what a good big band drummer does, analyze his part a little bit. See him looking at the score on his left all the time? He's reading the parts of all the other instruments, usually written all on one clef. When you hear him accent the same turnarounds and other ornaments that the horns do, that's what he's reading. If you enjoy the analysis, go do the same critical listening for any other big band drummer in this series, or anywhere. Listen to Buddy. They're all using the same tools and formulas. Big band music is very, very structured. It's a blast to play. Mr Bissonette does it very well and is enjoyable/educational to watch. As a very old musician, I'm honored to hear about young people enjoying the genre..🙂
Dave Weckl is Something Else. He's Just Dave. Steve Gadd and Vinnie Are as Well. They Shaped So Many Drummers over 50 years.

Greg really makes the flugelhorn solo shine. Starting out subtly and reserved with the brushes, then still not going overkill at the end.

Great band of stars ⭐️ young Eric M on Alto and Bobby Shew and other great splitting the lead trumpet book .. wish I could have been there to hear this super BR band
Dave’s technique is the best of any drummer I’ve ever seen. I guarantee he is the most technically advanced drummer you’ve ever seen, of course, without disregard to Buddy. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Dave, and I will say that for the rest of my life, I will always have a special spot for him in my heart.

No offense to those who might think otherwise, this reminds me of The Count’s Band at the Carnation Bandstand in mid-summer, late in the last set. I was there, there again now. Thanks for this vid.
