A superb Maori bass player I used to gig with told me he saw Gregg with his band in New Zealand. Gregg was badly ill, but still got up on stage and did the show. He had a spew bucket next to his kit, which he used regularly during the show. It was emptied every few minutes by the roadies and replaced, ready for use. That's the kind of guy he is.

LOVE THIS!!!! Bissonette gets a raw deal maybe bc he doesn't burn like his peers but he is just incredible and plays the shit out of this. Very underrated. And his brush work is right on point.

Wonderful player and a really nice guy too. Here is a great musician who is on the same plane as Weckl and Colaiuta in my book. A great innovator always pushing his limits and capabilities. Go see him for yourself if you can. Gregg is the real deal and is inspiring to so many pro players!👍

One of the few guys in this project who knows how to play a big band. I hate the way the drums are miked though. He is a killer musician.

If you're interested in what a good big band drummer does, analyze his part a little bit. See him looking at the score on his left all the time? He's reading the parts of all the other instruments, usually written all on one clef. When you hear him accent the same turnarounds and other ornaments that the horns do, that's what he's reading. If you enjoy the analysis, go do the same critical listening for any other big band drummer in this series, or anywhere. Listen to Buddy. They're all using the same tools and formulas. Big band music is very, very structured. It's a blast to play. Mr Bissonette does it very well and is enjoyable/educational to watch. As a very old musician, I'm honored to hear about young people enjoying the genre..🙂

What kind of kit? Doesn't look like a pearl or mapex. Is it a 90s slingy?

I borrowed a few of his Zildjians two years ago and he had mostly Mastersound 14" hats, 16 & 18 K Dark crashes. 10" K splash. And I believe the one under the china is an 18" Zildijan flat top ride. Not sure of the main ride. But when I used to set up his drums in the early 90's and he went back and forth between a 20 and 22" K Custom.

I always laugh when these drummers have to read the music. Buddy just felt the music and played from the heart. Of course he didn’t read music.. I’m a big fan of Gregg’s.
