Hi Lena, great video as always. May I ask you a question? How do you wash your brush after doing gouache painting? When I wash my brushes after gouache painting I sort of dab/press my brush(but not TOO hard) against the bottom of the jar repeatedly(like so: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ep2yY2tsf9BrjK8feature=shared cause the consistency we go for is usually much thicker than that of watercolors and it's harder to throughly clean out, especially near the ferrule - unlike watercolor; when I do watercolor I just need to lightly swish it in water without really touching the jar. Is this the right way? Would it harm the brush in the long term? How do you wash/take care of it?

Also: I've noticed you use Mungyo Oil pastels. Have you ever done a finished pieces(and/or sell a piece done with Mungyo) with them? I have them and I loved them, however I'm bit worried about their lightfastness.
@LenaRivoАй бұрын
This is how I do it too. I tap my brush against the bottom of the water jar a few times. This way, all the pigment washes out easily. I noticed that synthetic brushes wear out quickly, at least with my painting technique, so I replace them often.

@LenaRivoАй бұрын
Daler Rowney varnish is diluted by alcohol which means that the brushes you use with it should be cleaned with alcohol too :)

I appreciate the detailed explanation presented in this video, but would never consider this technique because it's very complicated and obliterates what I like most about gouache - its' matte finish. I don't like that it darkens the painting, and as a cynic, I sincerely doubt that the painting will not yellow and crack over time. I don't see the logic in applying the varnish, then applying an isolation coat before applying another top coat while rationalizing that the isolation coat will allow curators to remove the damage done to the painting from the varnish, isolation coat and top coat. Personally, I'll stick with sealing my watercolor and gouache paintings with Dorland's Wax Medium. One coat and you're done. It doesn't shift the color, and paintings remain matte instead of being shifted to look like plastic as acrylic products do.

I’m Im thinking this method would also work to varnish watercolor paintings?
@LenaRivoАй бұрын
Theoretically, yes, but because watercolor is applied in washes and is not as opaque as gouache, varnish can make a watercolor painting darker because it makes all paintings look wet. It is good for gouache because it makes colors more intense, but it may not work as well for watercolor. Tests are necessary.

Lena, one thing I struggle with using gouache or oil paint is mixing every little color I see. Like I see you do in your paintings. Take for instance her leg... you have at least half a dozen colors used to make up that leg. I would tend to paint the leg one color and try to layer other colors on top of that. Besides practice and intent, how might someone get better results like yours? Same with oil paints... many artists mix up a bunch of colors before starting a portrait painting... I just haven't figured that out yet... Thanks for your wonderful videos...

With gouache, it was helpful to use a wet palette this time because it kept my color mixes wet, so I could apply the same colors on different figures. But I do constantly adjust my colors as I paint, making the colors on my mixing palette warmer, cooler, lighter, darker, greener, bluer, more purple. I know that a wide variety of hues and temperatures adds a lot to the painting, so I am very patient when I paint. I pay a lot of attention to subtle transitions of color and try to capture those. I never premix colors, even when I work with oils. I try to make each of my paintings unique, without using “formulas”. Patience is my super-power :) I just do whatever it takes to achieve the best possible results.
