Really nice lathe! I'm curious about one thing. When the back gear handle is moved into low speed position, is the spindle drive belt pulley disengaged from the spindle and allowed to idle while the spindle turns at a different (lower) speed within it? Or does the same occur to the pulley on the head stock input shaft? Or something else? Because the speed of the headstock input shaft is unchanged when the back gear handle is operated, yet the spindle speed changes, so the belt cannot be connecting the headstock input shaft and spindle together as before. It is not obvious from photos what happens to the spindle drive belt pulleys when the back gear handle is operated. Any info is appreciated.
@TinkerInTheShop

@@Orgakoyd Its a pretty standard back gear arrangement in the headstock. No different to most other lathes with back gear
@Orgakoyd
@Orgakoyd Ай бұрын
@@TinkerInTheShop Well as far as I understand, normal lathe back gear operation requires that the spindle pulley be decoupled from the spindle, so that the spindle can turn slower, with the pulley spinning around it. This means a ''bull pin'' which locks the large gear to the pulley is pulled so these two parts can turn relative to each other. My confusion is about how this is achieved on the Chipmaster.
@TinkerInTheShop
@TinkerInTheShop Ай бұрын
@@Orgakoyd This type uses sliding gears to engage/dissengage meaning theres no need to remove a pin etc. Its all controlled via splined gears etc. Its not specific to Chipmasters.

Great conversion. I actually am thinking of doing a combination of the first and second versions, so I would like to ask, do you believe the linear rails add much rigidity compared to using a raising block on the original carriage? Do you have some drawings/dimensions for the alu parts you used? Also, where did you purchase the protective covers from? Thanks a bunch
@TinkerInTheShop
@TinkerInTheShop 8 ай бұрын
Hello,. The linear rails are rigid partly because the original cast iron slide had wear and the gib strip was also not ideal. Also the linear rail bearings are spaced wide apart which in itself is more rigid. The rails were affordable so it made sense to do it this way. I dont have any drawings unfortunately, and the lathe was sold a few years ago. If you mean the ballscrew covers? They are dust extraction hoses. Not the best solution but it helped!

Really nice lathe Dan. There are features I would love to have on the Bantam like a clutch/brake and I'm amazed that you can change feed direction on the fly. One thing to watch is that the dog clutch on the lead screw likes to disengage itself just when you are nearly finished cutting a thread that has taken you ages to do, a grub screw is a wise precaution. Lastly what is the lever to the right of the feeds chart?
@TinkerInTheShop
@TinkerInTheShop 2 жыл бұрын
I would have to check, as I cant remember, but I think the dog clutch has a ball detent. It feels very "positive" so I dont think its an issue. The lever to the right of the feed chart I think you mean is the main gearbox selector. 9 positions by pulling the lever towards the user and sliding left/right. Theres then also a ABC selector (to the left of the feed chart) which also changes the gearbox as well.

You have a fantastic voice. Thank you very much. The linear rails worked very well and I noticed an improvement of the surface finish compared to the original slightly worn dovetails. Centroid is excellent, quite easy to learn the basics and worked well for me personally. Fusion360 was great for CAD generating although since the change of free user features it has limited CAD greatly. (No more rapid moves...) I sold this Lathe a month or so ago, and I'm currently cleaning and assembling a "new" manual lathe which sits in it's place. I'm glad someone else will benefit from my CNC conversion and I can't wait to share more details about the manual lathe now in the workshop. All the best!

This design has been around a long time. I have a version sold by Grizzly Industrial in the US. My mill was made in 1999. Back then Grizzly sourced from Taiwan. I purchased it from the original owner in 2017. I replaced the single phase motor with 3 phase motor and VFD. I eliminated the middle auxiliary pulley since it was not easy to change the short belts with 3 pulleys. Tramming the head is fiddly due to no screws to adjust the head tilt, just nudge-and-fudge. The single rather long spindle handle was often in the way when lowering the quill for milling. I purchased a car steering wheel. Now even if I hit my head on the steering wheel it is soft so does not cause bruises. Enjoy your mill. I use mine often. Dave.

Hi Dave, Yes I've known about these clones for a long time. The Warco seems to be the new "Best" out of the bunch and having spoken to other owners and looked at pictures etc I think they're a step above with probably the Harbor Freight being the "worst". ALthough I've seen some awful examples under the grizzly badge (Purely new machines) So far I'm more than happy with the purchase. I find the 3 pulleys not an issue so far although I do have the 3PH motor wired to a vfd for general rpm changes. Haven't decided on the quill handle yet, The spring is definitely too strong so I need to look into that. Looking forward to many good years service with this machine. Thanks for commenting! -Tinker
