Nice to see how you two are doing, the boat is great, just curious about how the solar panels are coping with the amount of water over them, keep up the good work.

Excellent 24 hour run. Too bad that sea state makes it necessary to reef down. Thanks for the weather briefing and video of the conditions.

good move reefing, once you've had a chance to go right over all the chain plates, standing rig, mast and boom, then you can see what she can do.

So she's nearly twice as fast as the monohulls. Sounds about right. And in much greater comfort and stability. Looking great! Thanks for sharing!

@pakkellyКүн бұрын
Are you planning on not stopping in New Caledonia because of weather, personal schedules, or other reasons? This looks like your wettest day of the voyage. Have you developed more confidence in the rigging to allow for a heavier foot on the accelerator? Perhaps Spirit XL smells the barn and insists on a full gallop home.
@TrimaranSpiritXLКүн бұрын
Yeah that’s right Pat the nice thing about this passage is that we have the option to reevaluate the weather as we round the bottom of New Caledonia 650nm down the road so to speak. If the weather forecast is still good we’ll keep making tracks 👍 not trying to push the boat but definitely getting more comfortable with her and the loads on her in different conditions. She just moves so easily it’s sometimes hard to slow her down!
@jonathanlewis1352Күн бұрын
No need to go any faster. She’s comfortable and balanced with the reduced sail and eating up the miles. Leave the Jules Verne attempts to the thrill seekers and continue to enjoy the beauty of a well designed and well sailed boat captained by a capable and competent skipper who makes sensible decisions which we all benefit from. Cheers!
@TrimaranSpiritXLКүн бұрын
Spot on! And how fast does one need to go anyway? For us the 200nm daily averages and the ability to sail fast in lighter conditions is what owning a performance boats all about it’s not about going flat out and being stressed. Thanks a lot for your kind words we appreciate them 🙏
@LoanwordEggcorn14 сағат бұрын
Agree, definitely recommend resisting the temptation to sail (or make) her overpowered. She sails VERY well as designed.

Thanks for bring us along on your voyages. Maybe you can give us a little clue to your planed upgrades.
@TrimaranSpiritXLКүн бұрын
We’ll keep doing updates along the way and I’ll share some of the mods we do. Main thing is to sort out her weaknesses first which is to stop water getting into her core. To do that we’ll need to remove every fitting and to check over the entire structure. The biggest job will be the rebuild of the saloon roof and mainhull deck which is balsa core and not in great shape 😁

Hey there Spirit. I’m an ex-sailmaker, here in California, was essentially born aboard a 40ft Piver Victress tri 54 yrs ago, and so I love your channel. Been following you since the trip down under, from New England, of the “old” Spirit. Can’t wait to see what mods/upgrades you make to the ‘new’ boat, to make it as new and Bitch’n as possible!! I foresee 25 - 30 knots of rip’n fun reaching races!!!! So looking forward to that, and you future adventures.
@TrimaranSpiritXLКүн бұрын
Hey thanks so much for the kind words, stoked to have you aboard! Cant say there’s too many people that have been born onboard a trimaran! Now that’s something to be proud of! We’ll be doing our best to d her justice 😁

Love the updates. Keep am coming mates! Moving along well. Apparent wind sailing! Smart to back off a bit and stay drier. Also a little easier on boat and crew. Such a great boat! :) A rare classic. It does feel like you're getting more comfortable with her too. Keeper! Wow she sails well!

Really good overview. I agree with you concerning gated systems. That is a manufacturer trying to harvest as much money as they can... Open CPN will dominate in time because cruisers know what works... On the ocean, marketing and brand management means nothing... Experience and word of mouth is the best marketing...

Have orca app and the orca core has 9 axis compass, a 10Hz ROT heading compass and only that at the big 5 like raymarine cost you 850Euro while orca core cost 550Euro. Needed to upgrade the compass to get 10hz ROT heading for Doppler and Marpa radar functions. Orca have already remote monitoring and soon will have also a remote control anchor watch. The core also connects to your radar and raymarine and B&G already works, rest will come soon and this you can also not do with a tablet alone. Its quite open and will also be partly open source. Definitly the best value for money. Orca is like old steve jobs intuative simple design. Their sailing insyruments are top notch, much info to get a good sailtrim. OpenCPN user interface is pita like a dentist visit and you need to be a computer geek setting all up. Orca core pluged in, started app and all was there including full support of my old S2G raymarine autopilot out of the box. The steering via apple watch when eg single handing is also genius. There is much more then you think. I bought orca as cheapest 9 axis compass with rot heading for doppler and marpa, you get worldwide charts for 1 year too and it went from a planed backup to my leading system. They don't lock you in, you can use any IOS or andriod device, even android TV works to get it on the big TV in the salon for eg route planning. Even they have navigation tablet they sell all is open. And will get more over time. And yes you have to keep your business up with some money and orca subscription for all is very reasonable. I run i sailor always in parallel and partly navionics.
@chrisr8197 күн бұрын
Do you have isailor connect to the autopilot and working? Have all but cannot get the autopilot working.

There's a story about a motorcyclist in South Africa that had an accident with that same Garmin. Hit SOS and only received a message the next day in hospital from the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) saying they couldn't help, and no one from Garmin support replied for two months. Not good. I know the GGR require the YB3 Handheld Tracker which also uses the Iridium network.
@TrimaranSpiritXL9 күн бұрын
Yeah very good point and that’s the issue when relying upon buttons only to send distress signals. I’d not recommend relying solely upon the SOS function either the bit I like is the two way communication you have, the preset messages you can send and the constant tracking and the (up to) 10 day battery life!! which are all great attributes when it comes to being found at sea

This is fantastic!!! thank you. I will be studying this for quite a while-- just downloaded isailor, they charged $19.99 for the charts which seems to be a subscription but I'll go in and turn it off so that I don't get the updates which is what I think the fee is for. I also worked on a whole of the privacy settings in there as well... Phil

Awesome Phil! Yes they automatically put you into the yearly chart update subscription but it’s easy to turn it off from under subscriptions. Good to see you also sorted out the privacy settings!!
