I see. A preamp is to process the sound from the mic before feeding it to the amplifier. In 2024, we may simply use Rodecaster Pro II.

Hey Lenny, would you be willing to set up a Manley Voxbox for me and take a look at my current stack in Audition?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 4 күн бұрын
Hi @TheMiracleMcgee, I'd be happy to review your Adobe Audition Stack. Here's what I suggest: Send me a raw file (with your mic going directly to your audio interface, disconnecting the VoxBox), and I'll create a setting using only Adition. Then, once we agree on the sound you want, you can add the VoxBox and I'll make some suggestions on how to set it up. However, I need a raw, unprocessed file without your VoxBox first. Please follow the three steps on this page: www.lennyb.com/get-your-voice-processed-submission-form

Been contemplating getting one of these to use with my Lauten Atlantis FC-387! I have this theory that the +10db switch on the mic used alongside a good preamp like the A.R.T would just SING. the +10db switch on the Atlantis will give more character from the mic into the preamp and then on top of that the tube preamp would then further just give some meat onto the audio in a lovely warm way

@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 10 күн бұрын
It's my opinion that every client is different. There are very few rules these days because you can be working on/delivering to a number of different platforms. I prefer to communicate and find out exactly what the client wants. If you can't get clarity on what the client wants, offer both. Split your signal, record with and without the tube pre, then deliver both options. That's what I would do.

you can use the mid side chain button to dynamic eq/ and or de ess with the compressor. So instead of cutting at 320 and say 7k, you boost those mid frequencies, then the compressor reduces them when you cross that threshold set on the compressor. That can be helpful if you rather have a more controlled low mid and high mids. The you can use the air band to push back in some of what you removed.

Hey Lenny. Good stuff. Our German friend’s first mistake was designing a booth with parallel opposing walls. As with speaker cabinets, the dimensions determine the “resonant frequency” of the enclosure. Wall thickness and acoustic treatment cannot defeat the room’s resonant frequency. You did a good job of tuning it out but a simple 5-sided booth, or a rhomboid 4 walls, with non being parallel, would eliminate his biggest issue. As to treatment: Flat latex paint, then add 6” “strip and bracket” shelving, with shelves every 12” measured vertically. Then go to Sam’s Club and buy a couple of the jumbo packs of the house brand, medium sized paper towel rolls. (11” is the standard length of paper towels.) Unwrap them and place them along the shelves, standing them on end. Especially a few feet above and below mic height. If they are too bulky, place the wrapped roll on a band saw and cut lengthwise, creating two 11” D-shaped half rolls. Much cheaper than Tolex or pro sculpted foam. Although, Amazon sells 12” x 12”, self-stick, 3” pyramid foam pretty cheap. I just subscribed am exploring your videos. BTW, both Glenn Beck and Alex Jones use the $125 LCT 240 Pro I see in your background. I’m interested in seeing your review. JC

Hi John, Thanks for your info. The mic in the background of this video is a Rode NT1. However, I am a fan of Lewitt mics they are a fantastic value. Second, after learning much since the creation of this video, I agree with your non-parallel wall suggestion. The paper towel idea is very attractive. Someone (or some lab) should do a test to see the actual Noise Reduction Coefficient of a paper towel roll.

The dbx 286s is a fantastic unit. The "bang for the buck" makes it best in its affordable class. I've tried several times to remove it from my chain, opting for the simplicity of plugin-based-processing... But I always go back. That initial stage of processing is critical, and it gives the user something that for some reason can't be attained equally with any plugin. dbx did a great job of adding enough control but not overwhelming the user with too much. Anyone can dial in a good sound with a dbx286s... Especially with this helpful video. (Pairing the HF Detail with de-esser settings isn't something I considered before, very helpful.)

Hey Lenny, I love the personalized audio preset you created for me using Apple Logic Pro and my Scarlett 2i2. I still can't believe how great it sounds. I am curious if I had an Apollo Twin, could you get me the same quality sound from my existing preset using plugins that are native in the Apollo Twin? I ask as if this is possible, I could get the same incredible sound live on Google Meet and Zoom. There in theory would be any need for a post process. It might not be perfect, but it is likely way better than the $250 Rode mic I use today.
@HeyLennyB

Hi @ronjfortier. The UA (real-time) processed sound would be similar but not exactly the same as what I've created using the other plugins. We need to discuss the UA plugins you have, and the one I feel would be necessary to achieve a comparable sound. Shoot me an email and we can discuss details.

KZbin is abundant with tutorials about music and music vocals and all about that but that's totally different genre and the goals are a lot different. By the way, I want to know your opinion about a plugin from waves called Silk Vocals. That also does somewhat similar as your are doing with F6. So how do you rate that?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 16 күн бұрын
I recently used Silk Vocals on a project someone sent me. He wanted to EQ his voice, but it was already mixed with music and other voices. Silk Vocals did a good job balancing his voice but not negatively affecting the other elements too much. However, when it comes to getting a balance on a single static voice track, the F6 and my ears do the best job, in my opinion.

Hey Lenny, great video as always :) But imo the processed audio is a little heavy on the low end. Doesn't sound muffled but very bassy. Depending on the project that can be a good or bad thing but I think mentioning that this particular style of processing is not always the right way to go would be helpful for the youtube audience because many people fall in the trap of always going for that bassy sound even when it isn't "right" for their project. Love your explanations, just wanted to address that :)
@HeyLennyB

Hi @tallnig5231, your comment is noted and it's a good point. I always do my best to clarify that the processing I create is my interpretation of what I believe sounds good. However, I am always happy to tweak and modify the sound according to what my clients ask for. Thanks for watching!

This comment about bass in VO makes me think of a cool topic for a video: voice recording with music or other audio behind it. Lenny, would love to get your take on that, how you might approach things differently if you were making a VO preset for that use case and/or how you'd eq/compress/duck/effect the background sounds to blend well with the VO sound. I can imagine it being a little bit like recording an acoustic guitar, where the sound you choose for a solo acoustic performer might be a little bit different than the one you'd use for somebody playing acoustic guitar in the context of a band.

I have to agree about the bass here. Listening to his voice processed this way for any length of time would be really difficutlt IMHO. If it is a short clip perhaps, but anything over a minute long would not work.

Great content as always Lenny! One question .. do you recommend the Rode NTH-100 overhead headphones to edit a voiceover?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 21 күн бұрын
When you say "edit" a voiceover, do you mean cut, copy, and paste, or do you mean modifying the sound with EQ? If it's changing the sound with plugins, I only suggest professional studio monitors in a treated/balanced room. Anything less will give you less than optimal results. However, you could use the best headphones you can afford and still get positive results. I just may not translate equally on all playback systems.

Speaking words of wisdom... Couple of thoughts: with the preamp> line>split, you'd still need to be v careful with the input gain on the pre not to be clipping that into distortion on the loud parts. Mic technique and simply learning to control and back off for loud parts can help a huge amount. There's also the good old Disney way of using 2 mics instead of a splitter etc. V glad you got to the higher bitrate part, even 24bit has pretty massive headroom. Probably the biggest challenge w really quiet parts is ambient sound, background etc.
