This is a plane I wanted to build. So I’m glad I found your channel to watch your journey. We sadly don’t have FAR 103 rules here. I wish we did so that I could have one. Keep up the great work. If I lived in the states. It would be cool to go flying.

Congratulations 🎉 I am planning on one for my own legal eagle xl. Thank you for sharing all your trials and tribulations as well as the expected successes. You’ve helped me decide that I am wanting to try the full case version. If that is too much trouble I have your series to fall back on and I can always just cut the case and continue. Enjoyed it very much. Very good camera work made seeing what you actually did really worthwhile. Thanks again. Geoff in Florida panhandle.

The dihedral angle is set by the spar caps in the center wing. The upper spar cap is slightly shorter than the lower one.

You used solid AD rivets on the fuselage in some places. I'm wondering why you chose to use pull rivets on these ribs when driving/squeezing solid rivets would be easy and less expensive.
@xpsgarage6 күн бұрын
Very scientific reason I used the pull rivets on the ribs. I think they are more fun!. Seriously, the plans call out what type of rivet to use where. The nose and engine box along with the main spar web are solid for extra strength and in the few places you can't get a bucking bar to the back side they have you use a special stainless steel structural pull rivet. The ribs were optional on whether to use the 1/8" pull or 3/32" solid rivets. The solid rivets would definitely be less expensive but I've saved a lot of money by building from plans. Besides if a few bucks here and there were critical I probably wouldn't be building a plane at all. LOL

For anyone here wondering - it was the chain and a follow up video shows the replacement and how quiet it is afterwards. Once these chains start getting stretched, even a few mm extra play will make them wrap around the tensioner edges, which in turn creates the annoying whining noise that goes away once under load in normal driving conditions (and eats up the edges of the tensioner shoe, the hard blue plastic part). Both the chain and the tensioner shoe adjuster should be replaced in these cases. Our 883 is doing the same w/34k miles on it. Tried the tensioner first, same results. Chain is next
@xpsgarage12 күн бұрын

Osphoric acid. Converts rust oxide to rust sulfide. Base ingredient of rust oleum. Even if you sand blast better to still coat. Rust is a cancer, pits the metal. To the microscopic level. Osphoric acid gets to places you can't see. Then paint. It's really bad for your eyes. Eye protection a must.
@mattc987514 күн бұрын
I am in the very same situation but only changed the shoe adjuster and adjusted tension. The bolt is almost all the way in which indicates a worn chain stretching too much. Has 34k miles on it and gear oil was low too when I opened it. Will replace the chain soon and hope to report the same results
@xpsgarage12 күн бұрын
Most likely the chain will fix it right up.
@mattc98754 күн бұрын
@@xpsgaragethanks for the reply. Believe it or not yesterday I took down the old chain and did the same “screwdriver test” you did, and noticed it was stretched even 1mm more than yours give or take, so definitely that’s the issue. The problem is, I could not get to unlock the nut on the left (main-shaft nut), it was way too tight or with red loctite on it. Tried with a 20” breaker bar and 1-1/8 standard socket, a deep socket may have been better though. Any suggestion? I cannot install the new chain w/o removing that…and I read on the manual that you cannot use impact guns on that nut as behind it you have the stator with the magnets and can damage them. Only thing I can think of is applying some heat? I am one stupid nut away from completing this and really hate to pay someone to do it.

My bike had a terrible rattle, the Rocker lockers cured my noise. My bike had more miles, everything had more wear. If you read the instructions they only cure the one problem the shaft hitting the bolt. They don't help with lifter noise, play in the rocker arms. Your bike had minimal noise to start with. Nice video.

Yes I knew it was to fix noise where the shaft was hitting the bolt I just didn't know if any of my noise was coming from that. It's good to know that I won't start getting that noise as I rack up the miles!

I've found that to access the instrument panel from the back you need to remove the tank cover. Also, it's easier to access or create additional holes in the firewall for wire routing if the tank cover is off. And, God forbid, if you ever have a tank leak......
@xpsgarage25 күн бұрын
True access to the instrument panel would be easier. I had planned to leave it fastened with clecoes until everything was done but I know just as soon as I put in the rivets I'd think of one more thing I wanted to change. I've been working on it this morning and I'm going ahead with screws and nut plates. Should have a video later today.

I know Dennis has taken his tank cover off quite a few times on both his Ultracruisers but I do like your thoughts. Its not difficult to drill out rivets
@xpsgarage25 күн бұрын
I remember seeing some of his videos about that. I don't remember if it was the new or old ultracruiser but it seems like he was having leaks in the tank at the welds. I welded up my own tank so I guess I should probably use screws. LOL

Ok. I like the videos. Really love them. Personally the nut plates in that area seemed like an overkill. My next question was structure. I have both the ultracruiser and h5 plans. I have not started the projects due to a few surgeries. I have had hands and shoulders operated on in the last 2 years. So structure up front kept me scratching my head. Access to wiring and rudder control not to mention fuel. Buddy I worked with sheet metal 20 plus years. Lol

@tntx226 күн бұрын
Regarding your first question I’d say it’s personal preference, more nutplates and fasteners add weight but it would look better to match the rivets. I would lean toward the 2” spacing myself. As for your second question, personally I would stick with the screws, it makes doing an annual inspection in the fuel area much easier along with any maintenance required. Yes you could drill out the rivets and no this panel would not come off often, but from a mx standpoint I don’t think you would regret it by going with screws.
@xpsgarage26 күн бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I've been looking at pics of Ultracruisers and the spacing is all over the place so I think it is personal preference. Several I have seen had the screws widely spaced so I think I will go with a 3" spacing. That will put the screws next to every other rivet. That would also let me go back and add more if needed while keeping everything lined up. I will probably also stick with screws since I already have the side rails drilled and tapped.
