Thanks for the painting tutorial. We really need more of these for us beginners so much appreciated. By the way, did I miss which miniature manufacturer you used? I would very much appreciate anything on your review or opinion on best miniature brands which are good for painting newcomers.

@@user-mc4sq3fk5d The manufacturer of this mini is Front Rank, these are very good to paint as they have good well defined details and are not over fussy like some. They are wargaming figures and are not trying to be historical figurines like certain other brands I could mention. My other go to brand are Calpe, however these are a bit pricy but worth it. Front Rank make a good variety of nations, I use Calpe for their Prussians. HTH

The Prussian Grenadier battalions are often overlooked. They had six battalions of these with one attached to each Prussian brigade. The Prussian Guards Regiments are also often overlooked…. 1st and 2nd Guards….

Your video helped me alot in desciting what brand to choose for my Empire troops. So thanks for that! They are not that expencive compared to other collections. (You get 20 Knechts + command for 32 pounds) I mixed mine with oldhammer figures I got from ebay. It really depents on what you compare to each other. Old Reichsguard on foot is towering against the attacking Knechts, but compared to the marching drummer from artizan they have the same hight. And the scale aspect also counts. The old guard is rerally beefy (big feet, broad stature). But when you put the really old GW commanders and the artizans together they fit perfectly. But I have to admit I am a little bitch in that matter. So to others they are with no doupt perfectly fitting. I bought Halberds and speers of Fireforge games they are great.

Ringo any chance you could compare them to Pendraken or Steve Barber 10mm minis so we could get a better idea of size.

Living in a Bulgarian village obtaining appropriate paints like Valegio is expensive and very difficult, so I make do with what I can obtain locally, For undercoats I use spray can matt black car pain and car undercoat. I paint 15mm Napoleonic's, but it is always welcome to be able to watch someone else' work on KZbin.

Another thought as I continue to watch…this would kill the table top gaming industry. Selling minis, terrain, etc is what really fuels the creation of new games. The market share of the industry would shrink if companies adopted your take. I know that is not your point or concern, but the hobby would shrink…the shops would close…and then folks would either find a place to play in their homes, or find another hobby. I think that Ringo secretly wants to go back to the time where minis were sparcely available in the back of smoke shops. :) What’s next? Do we really need the internet or e-mail? Wouldn’t a letter suffice? :)

Imagine going from Osprey or similar resource to get the “historically accurate” colors to “let’s play with blocks”. :) I think the answer to this comes down to what your hobby is, and what percentage of it is modeling/collecting/painting is. Interesting topic. (But clearly heresy)

It's all subjective at the end of the day. If buying the minis makes you happy then why not. Historical gaming until very recently has been all about buy a set of rules and then buy what figures you want at any scale you want. The problem is GW and the GW players mind set that is now creeping into the Historical side of the hobby Warlord and Battlefront being perfect examples of this. There should never be anyone in the hobby that tells you how to hobby its your experience so experience it how you want to not how someone tells you to.

Very thought provoking and some very valid points.It is true you certainly don't need miniatures to wargame.However they look visually good and you feel in command of real units more than blocks or counters.Again however even at 1:72 scale table space needs to be large.I had 6frx5ft which was nowhere near enough.I am now going to have (hopefully) 6ftx10ft.Quite right also storage space for miniatures is considerable.With counters or blocks you can do any period or army no problems.As single people we can never achieve this you couldn't possibly paint armies of everything.I think you 🍒 cherry pick what you like and do that with miniatures.Even then you will be pushed to paint all you need.For me i paint because it is a distraction and stops me thinking about things I ought not to be.I also love putting up the videos ect ect.It was also a change from painting flat portraits and old masters something in 3d.I do agree however if you buy a new rules book and you have suitable miniatures you don't need to buy more miniatures.I also agree rules books are almost an ulterior motive for selling miniatures a way of drawing you in.A way of starting a person's addiction.Plastic crack really sums it up well.🐻🤗👍

You certainly don't need miniatures to wargame. In many ways board games are a much better way of doing big battles but I think it's the aesthetic- and let's be honest- the "toy" aspect that draws me to miniatures.
@RingoSimpkinsUK
@RingoSimpkinsUK Жыл бұрын
Totally with you on the aesthetic and joy aspect, there is nothing finer than a table of painted toy soilderrs marching to glory (well most often for me - destruction) but as you say, you don't need them to wargame, if you are focusinmg on a tactical level or even - as I am a lot more nowadays - playing solo. If I were to go round to game with someone then out would come the figure trays, but on my tod in the basement or sitting upstairs with Mrs Simpkins, then blocks on a map or bits of paper glued to baees are perfectly fine. Thanks for the comment.

For me it depends on a couple factors, primarily is if the minis don’t look out of place when mixed. If I don’t have enough “mini X” and need to have 20. If what I already have match in scale and/or aesthetic…then so be it. If they don’t, then I buy enough new to kit out the whole unit.

@@RingoSimpkinsUK I myself would benefit from impulse control. I am doing much better than in the past, but will occasionally have bad patches. Going through one now after starting to play Kings of War. I am mostly using models I already had, but suddenly felt the “need” to grab a bunch of old citadel Minotaurs

I swing both ways!😉 My Silver Bayonet force are all from Front Rank with monsters from various companies. My Pulp Alley stuff is from various manufacturers plus the official ones. The made up leagues from Pulp Alley are interesting, fun and have great models. Other games I choose all different manufacturers including official just to get that sense of individuality to each unit.
@norm977
@norm977 Жыл бұрын
Depends, have you already got the figures, do you like the concept and want to support the manufacturer and what are your budget constraints. A universal truth is that we can only spend our money once, what we choose to spend it on very much a personal thing. I As it happens, i don’t drink, I saw the price of booze the other day in a store and thought by comparison my hobby looks cheap! That’s what I tell myself anyway. As times get financially harder for many of us, spending behaviours will naturally change to keep us in line with our new reality. For myself, I proxy on the ordinary table at the ordinary level. If I wanted to represent a napoleonic battle between French and Prussians, I would be happy fighting the battle with the British army being proxy for the Prussians, I would be happy with later war uniforms standing proxy for early war - when I first started out several decades ago, such choice wasn’t present and certainly money wasn’t, so going proxy was pretty much wide spread and a default position - though even these days I would recoil from having my Airfix WWI German infantry on a Roman battlefield 🙂
@RingoSimpkinsUK
@RingoSimpkinsUK Жыл бұрын
I have to agree with your point re Airfix .. we do tend to get a bit snobby as we grow in the hobby .. and I'd find it difficult to have wehrmacht ranked up as Caesars finest LOL. I have been pulled many times for using my Warhammer Empire Army of middles Ages / Rennaisance figures along with Citadel/GW 'official' minis - but I started Warhammer in the mid 80's and we din't have the choices, but I am happy with it, I loose just as magnificently with it as I would with a fully 'official' one! I think the game is the point and the representation is just that, I love a great looking army on the table, but at the same time, I'd not be offended by one that is slightly mis-scaled, or the sculpts are a bit different or whatever. As long as the fun is there that is what really counts.

Eventually I will be playing bolt action which as we know is by Warlords.I have no Warlords ww2 figures whatever but to me it doesn't matter.1:35 scale by a whole range of manufacturers to me is fine.If the figures fit the era or scenario no problems but hey life is short and if it makes you happy.It feels a bit like fishing tackle a lot of which is not made to catch fish it's made to catch anglers.Epic scale did we need another scale?another gimmick from the sales people.A nice musing as always.Hope the holiday was good have a nice week both of you🐻🤗👍

Some very valid points in this musing.What isn't expensive nowadays?Any hobby is going to cost you one reason I painted 1/72 naps.I can usually squeeze 2units from one box which is good value.Anyway as you say much better than alcohol or McDonalds.You get the pleasure of painting the figures and they will serve you(hopefully)for years to come.Anyhow so what if we spend a lot life is short and you are a long time pushing up the daisies.Have a nice week 🐻🤗👍
