I think Ketil wants to be a good man, but his cowardice keeps him from fully being one. If he wasn't afraid of his son and the society he lives in at large, he wouldn't have hurt those children, but the power to make that change is still in his hands. He feels better about himself that he is a good slave owner but he still owns slaves. He asked Arnheid not to leave him like she has a choice. He probably thinks they truly love each other, but he doesn't give her the option to truly leave.

Just for anyone who may watch this in the future in the manga it’s more clear that guts don’t see Adonis was the one behind the door and would not have killed him if he did know. This is basically one of the worst nights of guts life and that’s saying something. And when he goes to tell Griffith about the terrible thing he had done on Griffith orders he overhears Griffith basically say he doesn’t really care for guts. Also Griffith was totally going to have Adonis killed at some point. Probably not that exact moment but Adonis is next in line to the throne after Julius dies so Adonis was definitely on Griffith hit list to reach power Edit: also yes guts 100% saw a monster in himself and that is why he sees himself as zodd

Those were two children stealing to feed themselves and their mother. Stealing from slave owners, one that was very rich too. The moment tha you, as a rich person holding all the power over those children, decided to hit them for "stealing", why does it matter how hard you hit them? Might a well commit to the deed so they can at least remember the face that holds them by the neck.
