I have to make a correction. It's true- in the 1980s The Terrible Towel had kind of died off but it was fondly remembered. To give you some examples- if you can find some old copies of Steelers Digest from the late 1980s you'll read people writing editor Bob Labriola and asking where they can buy a Terrible Towel. Labriola recommends garage sales. Another fan I distinctly remembered wrote Steelers Digest and stated that he felt too many fans were holding on to the past, the 1980s were his generation, and he would NEVER wave a Terrible Towel! As I recall when the Steelers were making a push for the playoffs in 1989 some fans called up Myron's talk show asking him to "revive" the Terrible Towel. I distinctly remember a fan calling and begging Myron to bring it back for the Steelers game at home against Houston that year (the game Ben Dreith gave the Oilers four time outs and they won 23-16). But- and this is from my memory so I could be off a bit- but he gave Bubby Brister the Towel prior to a playoff game in 1989 as a good luck charm and that was "bringing back" the Terrible Towel. I also remember WTAE broadcast the NFL Draft in 1990 remotely from the Steelers offices at Three Rivers Stadium with Myron Cope as a studio host. When Eric Green was drafted, they soon reached out to him for a telephone interview in the immediate moments that passed. Green said he had always been a Steelers fan and mentioned The Terrible Towel. Myron Cope then exclaimed "I'M THE BIRD THAT INVENTED THE TERRIBLE TOWEL!" Thus bringing a close to the interview. I also remember I used to bring for cold games at Three Rivers in 1989 and 1990 a wool Steelers stadium blanket. But when the time called for it- I would wave it as kind of a humongous Terrible Towel. And really, everyone around me knew what I was doing. It wasn't out of place.

Pittsburgh Marky, thank you for that long and detailed comment. You are correct that the Towel was fondly remembered by many in the '80s, and Myron did indeed try several times then to revive its popularity. Your memory is correct about Bubby Brister too. That said, suggest you check out chapters 11 and 15 of "Behind the Yoi," which discuss Myron's business dealings with the Towel. That'll give you the full story.

Hey, kids. There was a time when NFL teams actually went for it on the one-yard line. The Colts didn't make it.

On the day of one of the Superbowls the Steelers went to and won after the birth of The Terrible Towel, my dad took an old full-size flat bed sheet and dyed it yellow. Then he had me use a pencil to write a phrase in block letters on the dyed, dried sheet, then my siblings and I filled the letters with black paint. The phrase was “The Terrible Sheet,” and Dad hung the sheet between the two upstairs windows on the front of our house. We didn’t live along a busy road, but even on Superbowl Day with the Steelers playing, there was some traffic, and much appreciation for The Terrible Sheet, based on the honks we heard that day. 🖤💛🎉🖤💛

Even some of us Cleve Brownies fans loved Myron. The two automatic highlights for any of my many trips to the Burgh were always pizza from Vincent's and catching "Mahrn" on the radio.

Had an opportunity to talk with Franco. Told him the story of my Father and the Immaculate Reception game. Dad had always been a Steelers fan from the 50's and probably earlier ( He played for Pete Dimperio's first city championship teams in the late 40's). Dad and one of his friends were at the game. The Steelers were letting the game slip away, And being a typical Steeler fan he got mad. So he left 3 Rivers, to walk back to his car, before the game was over. He said, as he was walking across the bridge back into town, all he could hear was the roar and cheering of the crowd, when Franco made the Immaculate Reception. Franco got a chuckle out of hearing this story...... especially the part about the roaring crowd 😅😅. Btw his buddy stayed until the end of the game, so he got to see the Immaculate Reception and got the joke on Dad

The towel was so much more special when used properly. It was only meant for playoff games. Now they wave it in the preseason. 🙄. It is so watered down now. Anyway. GO STEELERS!!
