It seems the G25 wheels use alloy nipples. What are the durability of carbon rims and alloy nipples? I recently had to change all the spokes in my Prime carbon wheelset, due to corrosion of the alloy nipples. That was a costly affair
@ribblevalleycyclist
@ribblevalleycyclist 10 минут бұрын
Hi Lars, Yes, you are correct, the G25 uses alloy spoke nipples. The issue isn't the carbon rim, it's just the nipple. The use of alloy nipples is common nowadays, with the vast majority of wheel manufacturers using them. However, as you now know, when alloy and steel are pressed together, and water is added, you get galvanic corrosion. This can be overcome by using brass nipples, but this is both heavier, and a lot more expensive. Because of this, I don't know of a single manufacturer that uses them nowadays.

Hi Sharon, I've used the Park one in the past. Park make some good tools, but I think this is one area where they're way off the mark when it comes to price. This is the one I use, and I find it really good. Works with both QR, and thru-axle wheels, holds the wheel tight, and even has a third gauge to help you align warped brake disc rotors. ebay.us/t5WlEK

I don't think ratchet is supreme to good pawl hubs. And I actually like the sound of pawls more
@ribblevalleycyclist
@ribblevalleycyclist 6 сағат бұрын
The main advantage I see of the star ratchet over pawl is that star ratchet is a universal size. Too many owners have hung wheels up never to be used again, because they can’t obtain the freehub body for that discontinued/legacy/unbranded/bankrupt wheelset. The star ratchet overcomes this problem.

The wheel industry purposely plays this card, and I understand why people would do that. After all, wheels are expensive, and you don't want to scrap a £600 bit of kit, for a £6 part. When they first started out, the HUNT USP was exactly that. They openly admitted to being a UK based 'Middle Man' between the End User and the Chinese factories....... They don't bang that drum as much nowadays, though....... I think they want you to think you're buying a HUNT product.

I'm pretty conflicted. On one hand, this review seems honest and is in fact very thorough. On the other hand, the company sent you a pair deliberately for tests, which could mean they haven't skimped on the QC. But on the other-other hand, I've personally used 2 Chinese carbon frames for a gravel bike and a downcountry (this one takes regular thrashing) and can't say a bad word about them. Regardless, I think it's a good wake up call for big brands like Hunt or Elite (or maybe even Trek and Scott, they also sell wheelset under their own sub-brands) that they can't hike up the prices as they please and have to touch some grass once a while and be competitive. This may change however once China gets hit by increased custom rates (they still get special treatment for being a "developing country" but reality is they surpassed EU/USA in some areas and are just abusing the system). Great review and I'm considering buying myself a set of ICANs!

Hi koyot_mtb, You make a fair point. We call these products 'KZbin Specials'. This is why I made such a big point about first reading what other users have said in both my videos, and the videos from other KZbinrs. Those are the real users, the everyday folk that have spent their hard-earned cash on the standard, off the shelf products. I think those comments speak volumes, and are more important than the opinion of one guy stood in front of a camera.

I have used these wheels for two years now, and would recommend them.(5000Km +) I will buy these again. They have been used for bikepacking races (Race around Rwanda, BikingMan and Gravel Birds Portugal =super dusty and dry) Two issues have arisen. Firstly the fine dry dust of Africa has got through the bearing seals and into the bearings. They are not terrible but they will need to be replaced at some stage. This is probably not going to be an issue in the UK. Secondly, the rear rim has a rough matt finish which has stained from dust and the odd drop of oil that's dripped off the chain. No amount of cleaning can get rid of the marks. Again its not terrible, you only notice the staining on close inspection. I was thinking that on my next set I might spray a coat of car matt lacquer to seal up the surface. I've probably hammered these wheels more than anybody out there and they are still true and super strong. If you are thinking of a new set of wheels just buy ICAN.

A couple of reasons why I didn't buy these, one being the $190 shipping charge to Korea (although they did say it should only be $82 when I contacted them, but it continued to show up as $190). The other being the tubeless tape and valves not installed for customers. Yes, people will say it’s only a small thing, and I agree. So, why doesn’t iCan install it? Today I ordered the Elitewheels Drive G45 SS wheelset which is lighter and has ceramic bearings installed as standard with free worldwide shipping included. Price only $852 as they have an 18% discount code available until Monday September 30th. The discount and free shipping clinched it for me. I look forward to your review of the Elitewheels!

I suppose it depends on where you are in the world. This is how those two work out, sent to the UK: Elitewheels Drive G45 SS (After 18% discount) - $851.98 = £635.77 ICAN G25 $775-5% = $736.25 = £549.41 So, the Elitewheels work out $115.73 more expensive to us here in the UK. And the ceramic bearings (If you believe in that sort of thing!!!) is a £23 upgrade with ICAN. Hoping to get the review on the Drive 40’s done in the next few weeks. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 👍

@@ribblevalleycyclist you are exactly right in what you say. It's kinda splitting hairs. Your 5% discount helps bring down the price of the iCan wheels. They also charge an extra $20 for an XDR hub which I need, whereas Elite charge the same no matter the hub type. Are ceramic bearings better?
