To elaborate on it, it's the side entry with no safety engagement or cap to hold the spokes what's dangerous. My Elitewheels drive set have them just like that. It's been flawless, but I drive my bike quite safely and never in messy roads.

ZIPP used to have a dimpled set of rims (NSW454) but I believe gave up on the idea. It’s an aerodynamic principle that dimples smooth out the airflow and keep it attached to the surface longer, same as the principle governing golf ball design.

I need to go easy though, don't want to end up replicating the great job that Luke is doing over at @TraceVelo And anyway, I'm not sure if I can handle all those baguette emoji's 🥖🥖🥖 🤣 Aerodynamics....... Think thats all a bit too technical for my simple channel. I'll leave that one to the watt chasing experts!!

Interesting rundown. I'm getting flooded with adverts for "budget" and "bargain" carbon wheels from a bunch of Chinese wheel brands. SuperTeam, Elite Wheels and ICAN are pitching carbon around the 300 or 400 quid mark. Any chance of offering some insight into whether they are worth considering? Or if I'd be better off buying higher-end aluminium wheels from the likes of DT Swiss or Hunt? BTW: My criteria are price, weight, performance, serviceability and availability of spares. Cheers
@ribblevalleycyclist3 күн бұрын
Hi Brian, The short answer is, Yes, they're very much worth considering. Out of all the brands I've tested, ICAN has impressed me the most. They offer the best quality for the price. The only thing that can give you problems in the long-run, is the availability of spares. Bearings and spokes are generic, and can be bought anywhere, freehubs on the other hand aren't. ICAN do sell freehubs, but it's worth considering getting a spare one when you purchase the wheels. The star ratchet style freehub is a generic unit, and can be seen on the more expensive wheels like Nepest. If you can get a wheelset with the star ratchet, then this overcomes the freehub issue. Unfortunately, ICAN aren't offering this yet. HUNT - This is a good product too, I run a few sets. You are however buying the same product, but with their name stamped on it. The HUNT product gives you piece of mind that the spares will be available. But as I say, the only real concern here is the freehub. So buying a spare or going with the star ratchet style hub will overcome this. A well cared for freehub can last upto 10k miles. Knowing what I know, if I was spending my own money, I'd buy ICAN with a spare freehub. Hope that helps. Jon

@@ribblevalleycyclist Thanks for the comprehensive advice and guidance. As it happens, I've been looking at an ICAN frame - the X-Gravel. I might save a little cash by getting a frame and wheels from one supplier. Now I'm off to watch your ICAN G25 video to see what's what. Cheers

I see a lot of the higher end Chinese brands using carbon spoke 2:1 configuration with radial spokes on the disk side opposite of the drive side lately. Radial spokes are not good for transfer of brake or drive torque. It looks nice, saves some weight but will there be any problems after 10,000 miles? It would be nice if more of these kind of wheel reviews got into the spoke lacing, pro and cons and really sorted out what's what because I think it affects the long term performance of the wheels. For what its worth, I ordered a set of 9Velo, steel spoke and they come 24 front, back and 1:1. I just couldn't wrap my head around the radial spoke idea but some nice wheelsets come that way these days from china brands

I have looked into a new set of Chinese wheels, possibly with carbon spokes. Looking at brands like Elite, Superteam, CRW, GoZone. These Superteams look nice on paper but multiple reviews have highlighted there's issues with them. I would steer clear of Superteam, despite their good look.
@endtimeslips46603 ай бұрын
i have evo super team. my impression is their bearing not so good mine already have problem just for walk it about 4000km it start shown wear no more smooth. and this wheel not feel safe if you run this wheel in windy day. what i experience this wheel are badly impact when cross wind happen it enough slowing you down and compromise your balance. and the last i do not like from this wheel is the ratchet system, the spring are to stiff yes it generate sound louder but it made the wheel resistance greater. it not good for retaining speed. in long run you will notice you feel less efficient compare with use DTswiss Hub. DTswiss hub have softer spring it just enough to engage the ratchet system it sound nice to not rough like superteam Hub sound it to rough. i hope they will fix their bearing quality and the hub spring need to be softer.

Peak Torque did a video recently about these side entry spokes at the hub and "redundancy"- effectively warning that under extreme deformation of the wheel/rim breakage the spokes can come out causing total wheel failure/collapse... Think I prefer my straight pull spokes the DT Swiss style whereby they cannot pop out the side!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHm0o55_gZ1qnZY

For $100 less, I'd much rather buy the tried and tested Elite wheels Drives. $1299 for a gap in the freehub, misaligned bladed spokes, off center wheels and some debris inside the rim. I'll give these a miss. On the plus side, if you do buy these wheels, you'll be supporting your local bike store right out of the box. Regarding the spoke and hub interface, surely with a UCI stamp of approval, the wheels would have been subjected to tests and forces that would have stressed that interface? Im somewhat doubtful of the claims but hey, even roller-coasters despite being safer than driving to the them park, they still have a chance to derail. From an engineering stand point, its impossible to create a project that is 100% fail-safe regardless of circumstance. There will always be anomalies.
