Right after the financial crisis of 08' when FHA, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac started selling houses in bulk on the cheap to Hedge Funds and Private Equity Firms (they were suposed to only sell ONE house per family), I knew it was game over. People that should've gone to jail were bailed out, given bonuses and the middle class and poor paid for it. Not that long ago, one could survive on SSA or a Pension alone, but now, rents have been jacked up to the stratosphere and home prices are so insanely high, it's almost comical, if not tragic. Add runaway inflation and you've got a financial draining disaster. The level of greed in (Cough!) leadership of high finance and big monied entities is beyond the pale. They won't stop until they take it all.

Hi Danny, I just came across your channel. I'm 65 and took early retirement four months ago. I am presently living in HCMC Vietnam. My 401k got decimated due to poor decisions that I made. No one to blame but myself. Presently, I really just have my monthly social security check to live on. I've always wanted to live somewhere in SE Asia and living in Vietnam on just my social security allows me to have live a decent lifestyle and put away a little for some savings. I would definitely have to work part-time somewhere for the rest of my life just to make ends meet if I stayed in the U.S. I'm quite happy living here, but I know the Philippines is also another great option.

I hope the Philippines works out for you. Yes it would be nice if social security could replace our pre retirement income but to do so it would be incredibly expensive taxation wise. In simple terms if the typical person works for 40 years and is retired for 20 would require the social security tax rate to be about 33% of income. Currently I think its about 6% plus another 6% from your employer so there is a big shortfall here and this is why social security will be roughly a third of your pre retirement income. Yes you have to plan around this.

@@billyjohnson9166In principle that is true but social security is not invested in nor funded by the stock market. It is funded by taxing the current workforce to pay current retirees. I thank God daily for the Philippines. If not for this country, I easily would be homeless. When you're a single man with no children, our social services take a dim view at you. Hello Danny! I’m in somewhat of a similar situation as you. I’m Canadian living and and teaching English in Japan for going on 15 years now. I felt I was forced to leave Canada in 2011 due to a drastic change in the job market in my profession. Now, being away from Canada for so long, I could never afford to return to Canada mainly due to the exorbitant real estate prices. I also likely can’t retire in Japan since I may not qualify for permanent residence, especially at my age of 60. Therefore, my future plan is to relocate to the Philippines - the same as you! @@dannystravelvlog Hi Danny. Thank you for your kind message. First time ever, anyone has told me they admire my [decision to leave Canada and create a new] life [for myself] here in Japan. I’ve got a lovely, traditional Japanese-style home on a hillside with a forest to the north and 180-degree mountain views to the south. I also designed and created a food forest on my property. Unlike what I hear about the Philippines, the Japanese are extremely private people and in general are not interested in developing relationships or friendships with foreigners from my experience in Southern Shikoku. My life in Japan has not come without sacrifices. After going on 15 years, I do not have a single friend in Japan and spend all my free time outside of teaching on my own. It’s not necessarily negative, just the way it is here. I enjoy several hobbies and exercising and have learned to appreciate my peaceful surroundings at home. Social isolation is my primary motivator to eventually leave Japan. FYI, I visited New England and in particular Boston and Cambridge (Harvard & MIT). I almost moved to Acton.

Fast forward to today and the earth is very much in a very real, worrisome crisis situation with global warming, worldwide drought and fires. We’ve passed all the tipping points now. Did you know the Amazon River is drying up for the first time ever? We don’t even know if it’s reversible at this stage. For the first time, people can walk across the Amazon River basin from Brazil to Peru. I’m in touch with experts that have written proposals outlining how we can cool the earth within 20 years IF the right ACTION is taken.
