From what i've been told auto level is the default when using usb. When switching to manual the sound quality is way better. Could this be the issue people are having with the usb vs xlr?

The KM184 is an unsung hero in the small diaphragm condenser (SDC) category. I recorded spoken word with one at a studio in Hollywood and it rivals many LDCs in clarity and balance. Many people consider the Sennheiser 416 as coin of the realm for voiceover, and you will find it ubiquitously recommended (and even required, ignorantly) by many. And that's fine, I won't try to swim upstream on that, BUT...the 416 works poorly if you are in a small room: it reveals the room and gets boomy with resonance in a hurry. The 416 is NOT a one-size-fits-all voiceover mic, no matter what Ernie Anderson says. I respect the 416, I own one, I use it for its intended purpose: location film dialogue. If I were selecting an SDC in a home-sized voiceover booth, before I would buy a 416, I would buy a Neumann KM184. A shorter reach is just fine for the application, and its full-range is a great fit for any voice that the 416 "likes."

I had one of these for about an hour. What an abomination at any price. Easily overloaded, totally brittle sound. Kudos to B for getting out of it what he did but no, no, a thousand times no would I not recommend this ever.

At Rocky Mountain Recorders, I did a blind voiceover shootout between the UMT-70S (Corey Burton's favorite replacement for the U87), the M-Audio Sputnik (because they had just bought it), and the Lawson L47 MP MkII. The phrase "night and day" is not out of place. The Lawson L47 (tube) was so far and above both others (with the Sputnik making a surprisingly decent showing) that it was incontestable; both on the big control room monitors, and in cans. The sound of the L47 was, in the words of Homer Price, "ever-so-much-more-so" in every way. Deeper, clearer bass, more balanced mids, and accurate smooth highs that were free of hype. I chose the L47 for my home studio because it had all the round vintage fullness of the original U47 (which I have had in my own studio as well) with the additional precise articulation of the Sennheiser 416, which, mistakenly, is the coin of the realm in so many voiceover studios. A story I will leave for telling in the future.

Point of clarification on the iD14. The Big Knob controls, but does not gang, the speaker (main) output and the headphones. When you push the speaker button, the big knob controls the volume of that output. Then it stays at that volume for that output; when you push the headphone button, and set the level for your cans, that level stays where you put it. So yes there is only one knob, but it does different jobs depending on what you depress. (With the middle function being assignable in the software...which I really do not like. There is a pervasive problem w Protools not talking to the iD14, for no discernible reason, that is remedied by trashing the STATE file and rebooting. Painful.)

when I record bands this is the one I use for the live vocals most of the time. It's my go to dynamic mic. I also typically use a stereo pair of 545SD's on guitar cabs!

It's the bright, sparkly Shure dynamic basically. It's my choice for higher pitched male singing who like to sit on top of the mic (but with a pop filter and a de-esser - possibly start to turn if off axis maybe as well.)

the bit where you threw the box across the room did it for me. the Toner definitely brings reality to the term "boom mic". not unpleasant to listen to for short periods but that bass would drive me mad after a while, if it hasn't already by the end of this video.

You may not be a fan of that mic on the acoustic, but I was listening to it thinking that it sounded great! I felt like it was fine for the electric. Very interesting how we all interpret these things so very differently. Another great and informative video. Thanks!

I actually prefer the XM5800 and use a couple myself, super cheap and perfectly good enough for a high quality vocal sound through an amp for open mic stuff. Yes the more expensive mic's have a touch more detail in the audio, but the difference really isn't justified in the huge price increase, unless money isn't an issue and you're recording in a studio, and want the absolute best possible mic's, and in those cases surely you would spend £1000's on a mic not £100's ?

I'm a bass/baritone. The sd565 has more in the midrange. I compared it to the SM58 with the same EQ and the SM58 has more low end. It's weird that it cuts more in the mix compared to the SM58 altough it's older 🤔

Think I'm going to pick up a pair of these now that they're $45/pair at Sweetwater. They probably won't replace my Rode NT5 matched pair, but there have been a few situations I really could have used an extra pair of SDCs.
