Amazing test, thanks. Wish more people did the same back to back comparisons. Well, they both have FF sensor, but Canon has 24MP while Sony has 12MP. Which means that Sony has substantially bigger pixel size. Bigger pixels collect more light. Hence the better low-light performance and dynamic range. Therefore Sony is a safer choice for vloggers and is a clear winner here. However, Canon R8 feels like a better do-it-all camera, both for stills and video. And is cheaper.

Lumix S5ii + a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN 'Art' II looks like a sweet set-up and would cost about $2800 all in Nikon z6iii + the Nikon Z 24-70 f/2.8 would be the similar set-up and cost about 4500 Lumix combo would have better DR - and weigh 80 grams less if you cared. Hobbyist here. Exactly 1 year ago to the date,(July 1), I bought my first full frame camera, Sony A7IV. After owning point and shoot cameras for 20+ years and camcorders. I hear what you are saying and there is value to it. I agree you can create masterpieces on a cell phone and/or a point and shoot. Some of my most cherished moments were preserved with a phone or point and shoot cameras, that I go back to and reflect on to this day. Still, I have learned so much about photography over the last year in shooting with my full frame camera. Now, carrying my A7IV around sends a message to the world that I am here to take photographs! But I love shooting with it so much that I’m not willing to get rid of it. Yes, with good lighting your cell phone can take great photos. The biggest place where the full on camera wins over the cell phone is in shooting in casual low light environments, (restaurants, at home den lighting, museums, and at night). The ability to preserve details in shadows is phenomenal and I do notice the “full frame look”, being able to capture the light, and colors exactly the way the eye saw it in the moment (preserves the mood and feel of a moment) is nothing short of spectacular,(for me). The fact that My photos of my people and the things I shoot can look like that, justifies my decision every time I shoot! Cell phones are great, but Full on cameras dedicated to taking photographs are great , (special) also!

The FX30 may overheat in the sun going that long. On top of that they will leave the screen in daylight mode and use the battery running 60+fps. I was worried for a bit because I just pulled the trigger on the A6700, but Jason Vong's test showed over 2 hours of p24 H.265 recording in studio, and if you get the Ulanzi/UURig/Tilta fan for the A6700 I trust that will not overheat. You can use the dummy battery, turn down the screen brightness, and use a metal camera cage with 15mm rails on it and that probably won't overheat in a studio.

I agree with you 100% and great comparison. You don’t need to spend $2k on a ZV-E1 to get great 4K video. I like to shoot 4K as an amerature but I don’t need 10 bit and I don’t need 4K 60 either. With all the other stuff I already have I am not going to run out and buy another camera. While I really like the stabilization of the ZV-E1 s dynamic active stabilization one can achieve the same end result with catalyst browse if willing to stabilize the handheld footage after the fact.

The A7V could very well be a disappointment. Just look at the A9iii specs vs the Z6iii. Aside from 120 FPS RAW (the Z6iii does 120 in jpeg) and some advantage in flicker reduction for LED lighting the $6500 A9iii really doesn’t do anything better and takes a hit in image quality for general use because of the global shutter and the buffer is trash compared to the Z6iii. Why would the A7V suddenly surpass that camera in specs? I think Sony users are a bit in shock that Nikon has dropped the Z9/8/Zf and Z6iii which are just better cameras for less and knock out Sony at about every price point in value in 2024, and Nikon has a much better telephoto lineup for wildlife and sports which is where you use all that speed.

I'm envious, because you guys have SO many options, and as if those were not enough, every major brand comes out with new FF bodies all the time. Meanwhile, for bird shooters who need max reach, their is the Canon R7 (with all its shortcomings). The Olympus OM1 might be an option with its 2 X's crop factor. But for now, that really about it.

Why not just use DX crop on a Z8 with the 180-600. That’s about the best value in wildlife shooting at the moment. A less expensive option would be one of the latest OM-1’s or OM-5 and the 75-300. $2500 for FF the Z6iii pretty much leaves everything behind right now.
@Chris_Wolfgram
@Chris_Wolfgram 13 күн бұрын
@@kalimarus I'm sorry, but I'm confused.... The Z8 is a FF body, and the 180-600, is whatever it is, depending on the body. So that lens on a Z8 would only be 600mm correct ? I'm very used to a 1280mm equivalent. Just right for me.
@kalimarus
@kalimarus 13 күн бұрын
@@Chris_Wolfgram The Z8 has a 20 mp DX mode, so you basically have APSC built in for crop. You can use TCs on the 180-600 as well. With the 1.4 TC you have that 1280 eq, and you have all the benefits of FF. I own M43 as well and it won’t beat my Z8 for image quality at higher iso that you encounter often with wildlife and high shutter speeds. The smaller M43 like the OM5 and 75-300 is a really nice small wildlife camera though.
@Chris_Wolfgram
@Chris_Wolfgram 13 күн бұрын
@@kalimarus oh, okay. I get you now, the DX mode 👍 That would certainly work. So that would give you (I believe Nikon has a 1.5 X's crop ?) 240-900, which is a little short for me. Currently I'm shooting with a fixed 1280mm equivalent, but hoping to get the 200-800 sooner... Or later... Which would give me 320-1280mm, with almost half the MFD that I have now. Ideal for my shooting 🙂 Btw, I did use my Canon R5 in crop mode for a while, and that dropped my mp's from 45 to 17 ! But even besides the low mp's it lost something which is hard to put into words. I just know I do WAY better with my APS-C R7, than I did with my FF R5. Can't say it would be exactly the same experience with Nikon. But again, I'd try anything. I'm definitely not a brand loyalist 🙂

Rolling shutter isn't that much of an issue. People make it seem like you're going to do camera whips so much it's a pain to get rid of them in post with Catalyst Browse. It's a workflow issue. It's a HUGE pain for me to sell my lenses and lose an entire full frame camera. My workflow is okay, it's not bad enough to switch camera systems. You can get good results out of all of them. I'm getting the A7C II for the new AI chip to get autofocus in clear image zoom, the built-in LUTs, and 10-bit video. To get rid of rolling shutter you need to center crop the image, which on a 20MP 16:9 sensor is about Micro 4/3 size, so that is better than a 20MP MFT sensor IMO. The Nikon Z6iii having a 20MP full frame is tempting, you know that is better in low light than the A7C II/A7 IV, but at the same time I can clear image zoom in to center crop with an APS-C lens like my Sony 10-20mm f/4 PZ G lens or my Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 lens and use better lighting.

Sony’s all area AF looks simpler to use, but Nikon int he right AF mode is just as effective. Nikon has refined that AF like mad in the Z9 and trickled it into the other expeed 7 cameras. The Z9/8 seem to be basically the same as the A1 at this point, but the Z8 costs half.

Just because the lenses are cheaper and the vid quality is great with a good 1.4 lens. You really cant beat the price for performance, and you can sell it and move up in you need to. If you NEED great stab then the s5ii is great, but again it is much more expensive and you only get modest gains as you move up the ladder.
