Amazing finale to this great shoot. Can you tell me about your setup for the final aurora shot. Thanks
@alexnail22 күн бұрын
Thank you. It's shot on a Sony A7RII with a 16-35 f4 lens at 18mm ISO1600 and 8 seconds. Single frame, but the balance of light was obviously very fortunate, the only thing we 'changed' was to turn down the brightness of the headlamp

I appreciate this series is 3 years old now but I have only just discovered the channel. If you see this Alex would you mind giving me some insight as to why you prefer to use 100% flow and adjust the opacity when you use the brush tool rather than the other way around? Great series - learned a lot from this thank you
@alexnail27 күн бұрын
@@wellsyboygreat question! They are fairly similar and it comes down to preference. But flow would allow you to unintentionally go over somewhere you had already been and increase the strength of the effect whereas opacity sets a limit. So you would have to click again to add another layer of density. In practice I find that to be faster and more precise, particularly if I set the opacity to say 30% and do 4 quick passes. To have a similar control with flow I would have to start at a lower density and take time to make sure the brush didn't ‘cross over’. But still, it is very much personal preference and some people might prefer the more organic nature of ‘time=density’ rather than ‘clicks=density’. But great question!

This is a dream! I have to wonder about the expense of trips like these, are they deductible as business expenses for a photography business?
@alexnail29 күн бұрын
I suppose it would depend on the business, but as a landscape photographer if I go away to take photos of the landscape then every aspect of that trip is deductible. Obviously, that can make what someone in an office job considers a 'holiday taking photos' a work trip in my case.
@rebeldown77129 күн бұрын
@@alexnail Good to know! Was this particular expedition a workshop or just a group of friends? I'd sure like to meet some friends like these.
@alexnail29 күн бұрын
@@rebeldown771 it was a trip that I arranged for photographers that I've hiked with before or who are friends. It wasn't a workshop and recording videos on my workshops is very much down to the clients and the available time. It took me many years to find different groups of like-minded people!
@rebeldown77128 күн бұрын
@@alexnailone day I hope! At 7:35, you talk about the process to get the photo (multiple shots with multiple exposures/focusing), could you make a video on how to do this in the field and then in post processing? This is something I’d like to work on, I’ve noticed that my images are improperly exposed in some areas and not tack sharp throughout the image. The concept makes sense but the execution I’m still struggling with ☺️

wicked stuff, true bucketlist stuff to stay up to there...weather in the berg is generally very rainy and stormy afternoons. I would love to have seen more astro pix and more time lapses..but really nice series to watch..the berg is my spiritual home
@alexnail5 ай бұрын
The problem with astro is the lights in the valleys, you need a decent cloud inversion. Also combining hiking with getting up at night and for sunrise gets a bit much! I did make a separate timelapse of the Drakensberg which is on KZbin. But I can’t shoot video and do timelapse, it just uses way too much battery. I would need about 20 batteries for a trip like this if shooting timelapse regularly

Lovely image at the end... not sure any perspective correction is needed as there are no vertical straight lines in nature and there arent any in the shot either... did you have to tip your camera? How many focus points did you do for this ..3 ? Would love to camp in this region. Did the west coast in a camper about 8 years ago.. .would love to go back.
@alexnail5 ай бұрын
In nature reflections still obey the laws of physics and that is where the straight lines come from. But due to the complexity of mapping the globe of vision onto a 2d image you could argue various cases both for and against paying attention to these perceived issues. For me it's a problem because a reflection *should* be directly beneath the thing being reflected. Only 2 images were necessary to get sharpness throughout.
@stevef21145 ай бұрын
@@alexnail i understand, but that was very marginal. Why dont you use T/S lenses? Size and weight?
@alexnail5 ай бұрын
@@stevef2114 yeah it only really matters if I notice it, because then it takes me out of the image. It's much the same as why I edit so carefully. An editing artefact might be marginal to someone else, but if it takes me out of the image then it becomes problematic. Yeah, the size, weight, expense and general utility of tilt-shift lenses don't really make sense for me.

Well it was a “sorry not sorry” :P I'm sorry for the purposes of the video but otherwise not sorry at all! Actually the following day we had another rainbow (the one you saw on Instagram) and that day I decided not to vlog, largely because it's a workshop and I can't just vlog everything.
