Love this setup, I've been looking at something similar but want to go for a RIO 240. Is the standard filter and pump enough? I was going to upgrade the pump on the 240 to a 1500L/PH pump just to make sure there is enough water flow per hour. I would like to keep the filter as is as I like how it hides the heater and makes the tank look a cleaner. Don't the bristlenose pleco's need some driftwood?

They are definitely fully mature now, I'd say the biggest males are around 3.5-4 inches roughly and the females are a little smaller. Thanks for watching 👍

Nice tank!! Question, is the stock filter sufficient? I'm setting up a tank with mbuna. Planning to buy a Juwel 350 tank but it's a bit of a problem to place the in and outlet hose if I buy a Fluval FX2. It's just doesn't fit without keeping the lid open.
@alasdairaquatics8 ай бұрын
Honestly the juwel stock filter has been more than sufficient for this Malawi setup over the past few years! The pump has a decent turnover. I've also thought about adding a large external filter but the water quality and flow has always been great with just the internal. I guess it depends how heavily you feed etc. Good luck with your new set up! 👍

I'm gonna have to disagree with your statements about filtration. Freshwater tanks can be filterless and pumpless, like many dirted tanks. You don't even need any flow for some species and styles. Saltwater, on the other hand, needs at least a large amount of water movement, but most tanks, especially successful reef tanks, need mechanical filters and some type of chemical media like carbon. Most advanced reef tanks, especially SPS dominant tanks, have mechnical filters like socks or automatic rollers, carbon and/or GFO for phosphate removal, protein skimmers to remove dissolved solids, refugiums to remove nutrients and stabilize pH, calcium reactors to keep calcium and alkalinity in check, dosing setups for more calcium and trace elements, and high tech wavemakers to keep debris from settling in the sand on top of the return pump for flow. While your saltwater tank may have less filtration and maintaince than your freshwater tank, that is not the norm.
@zakarymcleod18508 ай бұрын
Having those freshwater plant lights so close to the reef probably isn't helping your algae issue. I had a small planted freshwater tank and a small reef tank next to each other and I always had algae issues in the saltwater tank. When my betta died, I took apart the freshwater tank, and within a few weeks, the algae in the saltwater tank became way more manageable.
@alasdairaquatics8 ай бұрын
Great comment! I had not thought about this! Apart from some extra algae on that side of the glass I hadn't thought much more of it. I'll experiment with ways to reduce the planted tank light spilling over into the nano reef. Thanks for the idea! 👍

hey, i got this tank recently, but I want to know how this tank is going for you - is the bottom strong enough? The bottom glass plain is silicone attached and was wondering if it can hold up all that water pressure from above - thanks!
@alasdairaquatics9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I've had this tank for many years now, used it for a few different shrimp setups and can tell you it definitely does hold water and the bottom is strong. 😁 All the DOOA tanks are fantastic quality and are built to hold water. The levitating base appearance is a nice touch too. Good luck with setting it up! 🌱

I have a 55 gallon tank how many clown fish can I have please respond
@alasdairaquatics9 ай бұрын
In general, it's best to just keep one pair of clownfish per tank. The pair will likely get very territorial towards other clownfish in the same tank. However some people have had success keeping a large colony of young clownfish together in a Harlem style setup with lots of bubble tips but this only works in very large aquariums specifically designed for this and requires regular feeding to minimise aggression. I suggest to just stick with a single clownfish pair in your 55 gallon tank. But you could get some different fish species for tank mates. Good luck with your reef tank 😁

These should be recommended to every beginner looking to start out in the hobby. I've kept these on and off for years and you can't really go wrong with them. My kids sit watching them move the tank decor around for ages. They do prefer quite hard water, but thats about it.
@alasdairaquatics9 ай бұрын
I completely agree! Shell dwellers are a much better beginner fish choice than goldfish, which people often go for. As long as their tank is cycled and has hard water they are hardy, small and easy to breed fish. Their behaviour is so interesting and never gets old to me. Occasionally they have a sqwable about something but it never amounts to anything serious. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts 😁

I recently moved mine into a 100x40x40cm tank. The colony is now growing like crazy, it's great!
