Rhodes has taken a long time to launch its own product. However, after KeyScape, it's going to be very difficult for any competitor. Still, it's a pretty decent plugin.
Have you found a way to get the arp on the MK4 to sync properly with your daw? It appears that it’s really hard to sync the arp perfectly when recording

I guessed: B A A? A A? where '?' indicates that I thought that the difference was tiny. Wow, I also preferred the bass on the software. The hardware sounded more sustain-y and yea, less punchy which I was very surprised about. I have the hardware and the plugin! I prefer to work on the hardware most of the time. I also like using the built in sequencer, which the software doesn't have. I use it sometimes to trigger external synths too. It's just really fun to work on electronic music sometimes without turning a computer (I mean yea the SQ-80 has a computer but you know what I mean).

This is off topic, but does anyone know a technician that can fix organ-like divide down tech string machines ? I have a Korg Lambda ES 50 that I bought a year ago and to my disappointment it has some faults like silent keys, non working horn section and a strange whining sound when I power the synth etc. I know that it's a very labor intensive job with leaking capacitors and bad resistors, lots of hard wiring. Many technically able guys just seem to avoid repairing these keyboards (for a good reason??), but if I can get any help here, I'm grateful 🙂

I use Severed Machines down here in Miami Florida for all of my repairs. I'm sure he could fix it, just have to worry about shipping.

Even just to get a fast look into lots of synths' abilities, the Hypersynth cards are pretty great: I got them for a DX7, a DX7II and a Roland D-50: not the most intuitive synths to program. I love 'em! And on the DXes it gives you up/down buttons for easy scrolling through the patches too. And one card for both my Wavestation ánd M1? Too much to withstand. Not to steal you light but my friend Rimela just uploaded a great "All M1" video.

I will say that the Pro VS Mini is one of the best tiny ones I've tried. Very feature rich. Sounds great and the interface is nice. Midi is meh. Bass isn't great. But it's the best $100 [sort of] desktop synth one can get.

*Vulture Culture:* "I'm a Reaper user, so I don't need Ableton Live LIte." *atmobeat:* "I'm an Ableton Suite user, so I don't need Ableton Live LIte." 🤣🤣🤣 Actually, this keyboard is the one I've been waiting for for years. I have always ogled at the Novation Launchkey because of its Ableton LIve supporting features, however, I was repelled of the poor key beds the older versions came along with, MK I, II and III were delivered with. MK IV's keybed may not be as good as e.g. AKAI MPK but feels more than acceptable in my opinion. Furthermore, I like the "waterfall style" of these keys. This time I thought, this Launchkey is mine, so I bought it a couple of months ago.- *After Touch?* To be honest, I never liked this feature very much. On the contrary, it always felt a bit awkward to me, "kneading" chords that I had already played. Maybe this is because I grew up with a classical upright piano since I was six or seven years old.
@VultureCulture4 күн бұрын
I could see that. It's certainly not a piano thing but it can be really great with pads, or adding pitch bend like a guitar

People will hate but I think this is a great idea for synth content and am very glad you did it. These days the bundled software is an ever bigger part of the consideration when buying something like a controller and it's a pain in the ass to watch a video for every plugin that comes with it. Nicely done.

I recommend the NK 3 keyboards much better than previous versions.Polyphonic keybed, all knobs can be easily midi learn with the names of the knobs on a nice LCD screen, if you own any Arturia or NKS software there pre mapped to the knobs. There is also a lot of free software that comes with it . Cons are expensive no pads or faders slight learning curve.

The 'Magician' patch at 35:47 is definitely used in the Total Recall soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith. I immediately recognized it because the movie is permanently tattoeed in my brain from watching it so much as a child lol (and I've always loved the score). Sad that I missed this one live! One of my all time ever favorite synthesizers! Gorgeous sounds! In a corner of my studio I have the following synths controlled by my JX-10 - I consider it pretty much the ultimate stack! JX-10 controlling: D-50, DX7IIfd, Roland V-Synth, Oberheim Matrix 1000, EMU Proteus 1 (with Alesis MMT8 and Roland MC-300 Sequencers). Just the JX-10 and D-50 together are a match made in heaven. Add the DX7 and you get that huge killer 80's stack like from the chorus of the Heart power-ballad "Alone". Actually, to my ears, the Oberheim Matrix 1000 and JX-10 cover a lot of the same ground sonically so I'm about to move the 1000 over to live with Sequential SixTrak to warm that rig up a bit!

I'll have to compare the Matrix 6 and JX-10 soon!

@VultureCulture, not sure if knew this or not, but with EACH sound you can load on the TS-10 you can adjust the reverb effects directly to that sound by hitting the "Track Effects" button until you reach the Reverb / Delays section. This board never ceases to amaze me. If you find a beautiful pad and think "i wish this was a little more full and give more presence" you can adjust the reverb to any level you want right on the board. Perfect for live performance.

I think UBXA is my favorite, those sounds are really unique, that an Oberheim could never achieve. The Sequential OB6 doesn't sound like a real Oberheim either, but it makes really impressive sounds, maybe they made the mistake of putting it on a 49-key keyboard, while the UBXA is 61, which I see as much more correct for playing on stage or in the studio. The machine is really powerful, bitimbrical with 16 voices, it's a real beast. I don't like the red screen, but the panel helps a lot to navigate the machine. It's a really impressive clone, I think the same of the Behringer Wave and MS-5, they are machines that cost thousands of dollars in their original versions. On the other hand, in 2025 we saw a bit of the BX1 that emulates the DX7 and DX-1 with that CS-80 filter bank that made many not cover the NAMM stand, it has caused discomfort among fans and that is sad, because once again Behringerphobia is not overcome in society and among the most viral youtubers. I am impressed with the Pro-16, that thing makes the foundations of any building tremble, and the JT16 (clone of the jupiter8) It also works with bitimbral to do split on the keyboard. (I don't know if they will do it in the Pro16) For now I'm sticking with UBXA and Behringer Wave as possible purchases this year. 🙂

I am sooo looking foreward to P16. Finally a VCO Prophet-type synth, that isn’t ridiculously expensive. Plus 16 voices and polyaftertouch. Gonna be epic!

GREAT synth list here! Wow great overview. I agree the MPE keyboard of the PB12 has to be its best feature pushing hopefully more manufacturers to follow. Tempting, but I'd pick the Moog Muse only comparing sound. The PB12 reminds me more of the Hydra Synth sound which has its place in the palette. Though it can be programmed to closely sound like the Moog filters, its end result is a noticeably different sounding filter especially in the upper registers melodically.
@VultureCulture7 күн бұрын
Yeah you *have* to buy synths based on if it has that sound, if it gives you the chills, not just because of a feature list.

Bought one of these new back in HS. Was like $800 or so at the time (84-85). It replaced a JX-3P and then eventually got replaced by a Korg T3 in the early 90’s. It was a good rock solid synth that had a somewhat unique sound IMO. No idea it was as rare as it was; we bought because it was cheaper than the Chroma Polaris that I originally wanted.
@VultureCulture7 күн бұрын
It's a very cool synth but I will say I prefer the Polaris, even though it is much quirkier. SX-240 is a great DCO synth but it doesn't quite justify its price nowadays.

What I think would be nice to mention in any review is if the Synth comes with an App Editor, something that most feel is extremely useful
@VultureCulture8 күн бұрын
I think it depends on the synth, in a lot of ways I think an editor is a sign the synth is too complicated for its interface. But maybe I will in the future.

What would be in your synth “stable” in 2025? Effectively what 4-5 synths would you own to cover off on most any genre/era/sound?
@VultureCulture8 күн бұрын
This is a great question! I own all vintage synths, so that for me a Polivoks for an analog mono, Fender Chroma Polaris for an analog poly and a JD-800 for ultraviolet digital sounds. The modern equivalent might be a Dreadbox analog synth for a mono, Oberheim TEO-5 for an analog poly and a Hydrasynth Deluxe for digital. This is just what I would think of as an "ideal" for me in 2025. Bonus: A hybrid synth like a DW-8000 or Mini freak / Super Gemini ♊

Im kinda in the hunt for a good companion for my Subsequent 37 - i was thinking MicroFreak but PolyBrute 12 looks so nice… my dream poly synth is the CS80. i kinda need the expression possibilities
@VultureCulture8 күн бұрын
Nothing but a CS-80 will sound *exactly* like a CS-80 unfortunately. I do think polyphonic aftertouch is the defining characteristic you're going for, so Microfreak could be awesome, so could a Hydrasynth, and then yes, a PB12 is going to deliver a whole lotta analog expression. Also something like an SQ-80 is worth looking into.
@jaypkock8 күн бұрын
@ thanks for the answer, i think your right about that and Will have to make do with my Arturia plugin for the more exact sound of the cs80 - atleast until Behringer comes out with a decently priced clone. Because there is ofc also the Deckards Dream but seems a little unreasonable to pay 62k SEK for a clone in times were flagships delivers too
