I'm not a street photographer and can't remember if I'd seen Saul Leiter's work before, but I've studied the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Fred Herzog, Joel Meyerowitz, Ernst Haas, and Vivian Maier. Leiter's bold use of color and his ability to abstract away the mundane really resonate with and comes naturally to me. He's my new favorite street photographer! My first ever Instagram photo has some of the elements discussed in this video, albeit without a conscious effort to imitate Leiter. I'm hesitant to post a link here, lest it might look like a plug.

Somehow I'm not convinced. I can take any sharp photo, then apply GIMP's „blur”, then „motion blur” effects - and voila, I get artistic photos? Really? Does every „normal”, sharp photograph get immediately more interesting and valuable by being spoiled such way?
@andrewberekdar7 күн бұрын
the image at 02.59 reminds me of Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press, due to the outstretched hands and the US flag. It's interesting that the flag appears to be upside down as well - very symbolic. Also very telling that the man was concerned about his shoes rather than getting out of the way, despite the fact his security detail who were body shielding him were incredibly vulnerable, as were the public.

This is very beautiful. There's something about Moriyama's photos that makes them impossible to imitate, because his soul is shown through them, and there are no barriers to that. A lot can be learnt i think by taking on his approach, not by imitating the imagery in his work. You've shown your own soul quite well by using his approach, BRAVO SIR! 😍

Man, you never really feel like the times you are living through are "history" even when significant events happen, but something about the photo at 1:47 really just *feels* like something I saw in textbooks when I was in school. Maybe I'm just being an idiot and a political rally and dudes in uniforms with guns are gonna have that feeling regardless, but I've seen tons and tons of photos from other political events and never got that feeling before.

@@rikitikitav this is nothing, sir. F4/F5.6, something around 1/250, 5000K and auto ISO (100-1600) and there you go. any wedding photographer with 6 months of experience could capture these stills, which are really nothing special. what's special is the subject matter and the story (history, should I say) happening right in front of them. what is special is how they (photographers) got to be at that spot. other than that, like I said, nothing special about how these images were done.

I remember seeing that photo pop up on screen, watching the news. The AP photographers have cameras which are equipped to immediately transmit photos to editors, which allowed the images to be published very quickly as they happened. I think everybody in the room recognized it then as something special.
@ImitativePhotography8 күн бұрын
Yep I think that's the standard nowadays. Same thing happened with the Will Smith slap photo (Reuters).

Yup, I when I do news photography, my camera is wifi connected to my phone or a computer and compressed jpgs are instantly transmitted to a recipient. Its standard practice.

@ImitativePhotography11 күн бұрын
Assuming you want an interchangeable lens camera and not a point and shoot, you can probably get some good deals on used DSLRs. I started with the Nikon d5600. Mirrorless will be more expensive, but you have more flexibility in lens choice with adapters and so on.
