I have had two GAF so-called certified roofers to my property. Both sucked. Neither could even tell me how they were going to configure air flow for 1/300 or 1/150. One, when I stressed the fact I needed that detailed information, said, to paraphrase: I'll have someone else come out and give you a quote. Really? So, why did I waste my time waiting for and dealing with him? Of, course, I never heard from him or the company again. NOTE to roofers: Looking at a satellite image, then going out and giving a so-called quote, is _not_ a valid quote! That's simply sales. NOTE to manufacturer certified roofers: Being certified by a manufacturer does not mean you can price gouge. Certification is for the client's benefit, for the client to (supposedly) know you can install the system properly, no mistakes, and so the client can get all the warranties. I have a third GAF certified company coming out tomorrow. I bet my c-note to your shiny penny the experience is about the same... bad. Bottom line, from what I have experienced: The more you know, the less they want to deal with you, because they cannot _just_ sell you a roof job, and price gouge, since the client has some knowledge, and wants fairness, honesty, and superb craftsmanship. BTW, I even wrote GAF corporate about my experiences, giving them much more detail, two weeks ago. No reply, whatsoever! If you ever call them, ask them about their/your local contractors, and see what they tell you. You will not like it.

What if someone recently redid a roof without a permit and now has a violation? BUT there is more, this person doesn't even own the home.. no permission from the homeowner because the 100% ownership passed away years ago.
@carestream13 ай бұрын
Violation goes to owner who apparently is dead. City paper near us had article of how hundreds of dead people had housing department warrants issued for not showing up to housing court.

Can Silicone go over GAF Roof Cap material on Flat roof?
@BhatmannАй бұрын
I did it silicone over granulated cap sheet and it worked excellent. On a different part of the building I used henrys aluminum coating. Roofing temps were way cooler with the aluminum.

My 3 tab Owens Corning going on 30 years looks better than my neighbors 5 year old GAF architectural shingle roof. I'm shopping around now to replace a perfectly fine roof due to it''s age. Going with OC duration. Thanks to 100's of videos proving GAF is subpar to 75% of shingle out there I decided to avoid it. It gets the job done but not well. The colors su<k too.
@MundiTaurus3 ай бұрын
Mine is finally worn because of hurricanes. Also, OC is known for being the manufacturer that honors its warranties more/better than any other. That, from roofers experiences stated on forums (which I am going crazy reading so many of them).

Im in north florida, theres are alot of cheap roofing companies giving out bids at $375-$425 a square on arch shingle. We do OC duration as a preffered installed, all work is inspected, permitted and we get the homeowner up to current hurricane codes, carry 3 million in liability and all our installers have workers comp. We charge $500 a square and unfortunately, many customers pick the cheapest bid and half of these other companies will be out of business in 2 years so good luck on warranty work in a few years down the road.

Is it true that asphalt felt prolongs the life of asphalt shingles?
@claireh.7605Ай бұрын
felt paper is a magic product - it absorbs water and then dries out; once it absorbs, it become impenetrable to water; synthetic is just a piece of semi-plastic that lets vapor through for drying, but it is nothing like the paper absorb-dry-absorb quality because unlike felt paper, it does not absorb water, so it doesnt act as this storage reservoir for water, where felt paper stores, dries, and then pulls out more water through capillary action from the shingles above. synthetic is just a barrier that dries, felt paper does an extra whicking and pulling water out of wet materials action to make them dry faster and spend less time rotting

I have a 10 year old HD Timberline Shingles. I was told by a roofer only good for 10 years? That its time for a new roof?
@jackdanson26 ай бұрын
Hooey. If it's still in good shape it should be fine for at least another 5 years. And it could be fine for up to another 15 if it doesn't get weather damage. If you aren't having issues I'd leave it. Of course a roofer is going to say you need a new roof.

@@8356-4 You probably have a leak into your decking and your decking is rotted. The roofer may be correct. Also, I only see shingles lasting 12-15 years before patching is uneconomical and a roof replacement makes financial sense.
@BG-fx8ce3 ай бұрын
10 years is just a blatant lie and attempted ripoff. I have 30 year HD shingles from gaf that are just fine. If contractors had there way you would be replacing shingle every couple years

Do you think speaking about walking on trusses vs rafters would have been an important piece of information or storage of items on trusses vs rafters? Or am I wrong in assuming that you should never walk on trusses or store any items?
@jordancollings2889Ай бұрын
You can walk on trusses. You can also store items on trusses. Usually you'll lay down plywood across them when you want to store stuff but often you don't have much attic space anyway.
@JohnMichael-to8cb6 ай бұрын
Nobody ever talks about the need for a crane and that additional cost.
@jordancollings2889Ай бұрын
Typically the cost to deliver includes a crane to lift them up, at least near me. You do typically only get a set amount of time before you're charged extra though.

Ceiling above shower has big brown/yellow areas but only when showering then it dries in 15-20 minutes and ceiling is back to its usual color. Almost feels like its from the condensation. What could be a typical cause of this and how to fix it? I should note that a plumber came by and said there was no moisture present on the infrared so unlikely a leak.
