Very handy! - I used this play-along to create a "compatibility" chart for flute, clarinet (Bb and bass) and alto clarinet, in each key of blues. I played along as best I could and then rated the ease of play on a scale of 1-5 for each instrument, in each key. Many thanks for this simple tool.

3:05 I know David Baker's books are super popular, but I'm sure you'd agree that the Bebop lick was first made famous by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie back in the 50's Bebop era :) Ain't trying to be the jazz police lol Super useful video Jason thanks!

Licks made by Parker/Gillespie, yes. Codified by David Baker. Similar to western art music when a composer (like Beethoven) creates a theme and a theorist years later names the theme/melodic device.

The first couple of times can be scary because we're exposing ourselves and our abilities in front of others. Start by having a plan of action before you do and have an idea of what you would like to do and go from there.

The chords are written in concert key or refers to the instrument key? As an example, the Bb chord is Bb or C in trumpet?
@JasonKlobnakMusicInc
@JasonKlobnakMusicInc 2 ай бұрын
That is correct. For trumpet players and other Bb instruments you would transpose up one whole step from concert key. I write in concert key for my videos because I have more than just trumpet players following along. It's also very beneficial for Bb players (and Eb players for that matter) to be able to transpose from concert key.

Oh my gosh! Just getting back to the trumpet after 9 years and have a nice short high C already. Amazingly captured by utilizing 3 or 4 notes and super simple on the valves. I wish I knew about this half a century ago! I love your simplicity and openness to play along. Need lots of Chet Baker! Thanks so much!

Great sounding group. Your bone and bass players are amazing (you too). I use AMT Q7 mini as well (sax). Never thought I could get away with piping its output straight into my Quintessence (also first in my chain). I use VocoLoco to manage the effects loop (and the impedance match to the board). Jason, Question about #3. Can you not use different numbers (pitches)such as "5-b5-4-6-3-2" (sol-bsol-fa-la-mi-re) in a 2nd step m7 chord (ex: Dm)? Also, doesn't it make more musical sense to use solfeggio syllables to reinforce the making/creating of melody so that the player HEARS the pitches???
@JasonKlobnakMusicInc
@JasonKlobnakMusicInc 4 ай бұрын
You absolutely can. It’s up to the individual and musical upbringing they have had or what makes the most sense. I know a lot of gospel musicians who would prefer the numbers of the key (and hear it that way best). Other musicians in other cultures use fixed Do in solfège, so using that can get tricky when attempting a “one size fits all” approach. What works best for you will be perfect for you and there’s nothing wrong with that!

@JasonKlobnakMusicInc

That’s a good question. I am a believer of using effects as a sparingly used compliment to the sound and need of the music. What would you want to accomplish with it? Start there.

Well they sounded OK though all were just simple ascending lines. You might get more interesting results with just a random number generator to find you permutations of the pentatonic scale. It was interesting that ChatGPT chose some notes that weren't even in the scale.

Granted this was from quite a while ago (considering how fast A.I. makes updates, changes and improvements). It's very possible that if we were to run the same prompt...or a more comprehensive prompt, that it might give us a different outcome now.
