Happy birthday Nathan and thank you for this inspiring testamony! It's an encourageing proof to me youngster Psalm 92 is right... The rightous shall florish like a palmtree, He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those who are planted in the house of the LORD Shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age, They shall be fresh and flourishing, To declare that the LORD is upright. Amazing.

Thank you for bringing this psalm to my attention in this context. I had not thought of applying this beautiful psalm to myself as a high climbing career arborist, much less on my birthday. Blessings to you and yours in Yeshua the Messiah's name!

Happy Birthday, I really enjoy your channel and your fine pruning work. Not enough arborists love and respect trees; especially up here in Washington.
@HoshanaRabbahАй бұрын
How true. It is the same down here in Oregon. So many arborists claim to be tree savers, and yet they don't let making a quick buck stand in the way of taking down a perfectly good tree that, with a little more information given to the client, the tree could be saved. I save a lot of trees from the saw that my competitors try to talk the owners into removing because they think the tree is dangerous, yet when I tell them what they can do to save the tree by mitigating the danger, the owners are ecstatic, plus they save a boat load of money. Also another thing that I've learned: just because you're an "ISA Certified Arborist" (like me) doesn't mean you're a passionate tree saver. Too many arborists are sell-outs for a quick buck at a tree's (the lungs of the planet!) expense. Principles and morality must be our guiding force, not making money. If we do the right thing by our clients, by the Earth, by the golden rule and by God the money will automatically follow! Amen.

My son lives in Boston, and I made the trip from Dallas, Oregon out to visit him this past summer. The Constitution was high on my list of sites to see, and she was amazing. Only wish I could have seen the diagonal riders, which were reinstalled in the restoration of the 1990’s. They prevented sagging or ‘hogging’ of the hull by stiffening it. Just an amazing piece of history.

I'll chime in as a former crew member (I was XO from Feb 2013 - May 2015). Most of the live oak came from St. Simon's Island, GA. Because all the live oak groves were wiped out from shipbuilding during the 1800s, it's now a protected species. The only legal way to get live oak these days is from a dead tree. Constitution Grove in Crane, IN is white oak, yellow pine, and Douglas fir. The exterior and interior planking are white oak, as is the keel (which has never been replaced. The live oak was mainly structural (i.e., framing). Lastly, the ship gets underway 5 of 6 times a year. The actual turnaround (i.e., when the ship leaves the pier and returns mooring on the opposite side - this evens out the wear on the ship) is around 4 June to commemorate Midway. This is the cruise where we would bring on all the local VIPs (e.g., Governor, Mayor, Fire Chief, et al). The 4 July cruise is the big one because anyone can enter the lottery for a free ride with one guest and 250 lucky winners will show up with their guest. There are typically two underway events in August that are all-Navy (120 CPO-selects are invited from across the Navy and they spend a week "learning the ropes"). The final underway event is on 21 October to commemorate the ship's birthday, which is when she was launched in 1797. Glad you enjoyed visiting America's Ship of State! Let me know if you have any questions. Here's video from the last time I got underway on Old Ironsides in October 2014. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqmTZIBqftyIg7c

Thank you Sir for chiming in and adding your expertise to this conversation. Thank you for your service! When my wife and I visited Boston several weeks ago (my first visit), we did a guided tour of the Freedom Trail having no idea it ended at Constitution. At the last minute we discovered this and made our way to the ship. What a glorious way to end a truly remarkable day! Again, thank you.

Yes, I do have question for which I would grateful to hear your answer. While in the Constitution gift shop, I purchased some souvenirs made from the copper that clad the ship's underwater hull before it was replaced with new copper in the mid-1990s. I am curious to know from which era these copper souvenirs came? That is, when was the copper last replaced prior to this last time? Thank you!

That epiphytic fern you were looking at is Polypodium sp. It is common to find that perched on oaks.

Also the USS Constitution is the only current commissioned US navel vessel to have sunk an enemy in combat. Many other US ships have sunk enemy ships, but none of them are in commission. They have either been scrapped, or are out of commission as museum ships,

Nathan, you are a true trailblazer. I hope to see, henceforth, more gardens in the Cascadia style. It is always exciting for me to see new kinds of gardening across the world, especially in the Japanese style. I’ve been inspired and now will have to meditate on the name of my own style, here in Louisville Kentucky. Cheers to you. Thank you for the video and praise the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

@joec51292 ай бұрын
I actually billed ecosystem Ponds and love the art of Japanese Gardens. What makes a pond look amazing its actually the planting and design around the pond. The videos you put out on KZbin are very informative and actually got me inspired to learn how not only prune and style different types of conifers not only for the looks, but the health of the trees.

How to train younger trees to have contorted branches?
@goodnewstreeserviceinc.43943 ай бұрын
Good question. In my business, I usually get involved with trees that already have been pruned or are mature trees that people want to have pruned in a Japanese style, but are beyond the formative pruning stage. To learn how to formatively prune young trees, I recommend studying the art of bonsai. There are many good and basic books on this subject that talk about pruning young trees formatively. Many if not most of the same pruning principles of bonsai can be applied, though on a larger scale, to the larger trees. This art form of aesthetic pruning is known as sukashi, a term that is not often used, but one the I employ due to its specificity and is the technically correct Japanese term for pruning larger garden trees while employing bonsai pruning techniques. I hope this was helpful to you. Cheers!

The water was so pretty when I was young now it's so mucky we couldn't even see the fish! Sad days hope it's cleaned very soon!
@nathanlawrence69944 ай бұрын
One positive thing about murky waters is that they reflect the trees and sky above them better than clear water. They kind of act like a mirror. I recently learned, when visiting the Chinese Garden in Vancouver BC, that in their gardens they purposely keep the waters murky for this reason. The Japanese apparently not so much so-at least in the gardens I have visited. There is charm and beauty everywhere if we look for it. Sometimes we have to adjust our thinking and expectations a bit. Cheers!

Thank you. I have been aesthetic pruning trees and shrubs for 50 years, since I was a teen. It has only been the last couple of years that I feel that I have more or less mastered pruning the pines in the Japanese sukashi style. Admittedly, I still have much more to learn. Unless one goes to Japan and studies under a master pruning craftsman or studies under someone who has studied under such a person, it's hard to learn how to do this. Not a lot of good how-to videos and almost no books out there on this subject. It's an art form that pretty much has to be passed on from teacher to student, don't you think?
