Great for the old mineral oil but what effect would the synthetic oils used now have? Nothing synthetic has ever been good for the environment.

I wouldn't use WMO/Diesel on a deck or anything like that. Motor oil and fuel have things in them you real don't want on decks or any surface you will be living with. That have been said I built a fence and gate using timber milled with chainsaw from my own property. A coat of WMO/Diesel every few years has kept the fence in good condition for over a decade.... With the exception of the fence post. They soaked in the WMO/Diesel before going in the ground, but they did rot and need replacement after about 5 or 6 years.

I like that, but I seem to remember climbing up on a trailer with diesel soaked wood after a little rain shower and it was slick as shit. Am I remembering that right?

On the family farm back in Wales, we have a dump trailer made from wood. We cal it 'Y Drol' which means the cart as in a cart drawn by a horse. That is because, that is how it started out its life probably back in the early 20th Century if not earlier. The only modifications it has had in its lifetime is a new screw for the dump (no hydraulics), an axle put on long before I was born (I am in my mid-fifties) with rubber tyres and of course, the drawbar making it suitable for towing behind a tractor and apart from the winding jack and the actual towing eye, it is a massive beam of wood. It has survived because it was smothered in sump oil over its lifetime. It could probably do with new tyres however, as the last time I recall them being changed was when I was around 10 years old!!

Well there you have it: UNFREAKING believable and so TOTALLY american!! Diesel is one of the environments worst nightmares: it is highly toxic, actually more so than petrol and probably the oils that you used. I had to laugh when you got down and dirty under the trailer and said you didnt want to get oil on your face but sprayed diesel instead: lovely cancer causing properties - -oh yes and all the rest landed on the gravel to seep into the ground and into your waterways: excellent care of your environment. lets just mix it all together -- probably drink some to celebrate doing the job well. You have lost my vote .......................

When covid hit, I took advantage of the free time and replaced all the wood on my little utility trailer. Then I got some used motor oil and some oooold heating oil mixed 50/50 and bathed that wood till it couldn't take any more. Did it again the next year. About to do it again. I think that wood is going to last a long time (barring any fires, lol.)

Thanks for your nice crude oil cracking tower breakdown diagram at 2:50. Your weld on tie downs are just great, and i love your safety custom tie down hooks. But putting oil on a deck shocked me: surely it will be slippery after the one week of curing, maybe slippery during a rain; so i would never do that. Each to their own! I would have given the boards the treatment before the deck got built.

Your roads are petroleum mixed with stone. These roads extend through environmentally sensitive areas with no impunity and don’t get me even started on road salt that washes into the rivers and streams legally. But my commercial property cannot exist without a containment for the runoff. But between you and me, equipment trailers are preserved the same exact way.

I don't agree, due to my own experiences. I have a trailer that I hauled a leaking Ford 8N tractor on 200 mile trip. Tractor leaked a puddle of 90 wt about 24 inches across onto the treated wood floor. Fast forward 2 years, and the entire area where the oil stain is, has rotted completely thru, to the point I can put my whole foot thru the hole. Really strange, I'm going to have to replace the 2 center boards of the trailer.

I have 2 spares also, one like your setup but for the other, it has a trailer spindle mounted in a framework and then a full live hub (same as on the trailer) is on the spindle, then the tire mounted to that. Most people that have towed for years have experienced a bearing fail, with this setup, I can take the bad hub off, tire and all and swap in the new setup and be rolling in no time, get to the next town, he a parts hose for some bearings to replace the bad ones in the, now spare, hub and we are back on the road.

I treated both of my trailers with some old new oil. It was probably 20 years old. It was low ash sae 30w. Put it on straight out of the jug. Used a dust brush to smear it on thick and those boards sucked it in so fast. I did 2 coats 5 gallons between the 2 trailers

Off road in my Area is dyed purple. Never got the tank on my Volkswagen "dipped" in 20 years of driving it. Jet B doesn't have road tax on it either and is not dyed. Dam I miss that car and all the wonderful sources of almost free fuel I would run it on.

Hahaa try that in NY! My neighbor did this and was getting his used oil from a local shop to do his retaining wall and land scaping steps with. With in was few weeks DEC was at his house then it was a month-long shit show. Cost him $1000's in fines and had to have his whole retaining wall removed, all the soil like ten feet down and all kinds of crazy stuff. Sad part was the guy was doing it for years and was kind of an old school guy. The environmental trucks and excavators were there and just blew up his property around the wall and steps. So, if you do it in NY just make sure no one is looking and sure as heck don't tell anyone with loose lips. Snitches get stiches!

Motor oil/transmission oil will not polymerize like boiled linseed oil etc. Motor oil will have an oder anytime the sun is shining or its hot. Being a waste product, its free. However for the effort involved id personally use an actual wood sealer. Products that cure will last longer and provid better protection so your trading labor for material cost. Not to mention they wont stain your pants or stink of you set on them once cured. And as far as the environment goes, the idea that oil comes out of the ground as cude is rather misleading as the problem with oil leaching out of wood is it goes into surface groundwater. When properly recycled, used oil will be redefined or used as fuel vs goings into surface water. The problem with solvent thinned wood products is the solvent. If your concerned about the environment or your health. Use a water based product. The sealer I use on my fence has the same sealer regardless if you use the water or solvent thinned product. I understand why farmers do it (think of how much waste oil they must have from implements) but i think its silly for anybody else.

When I was a kid in school in southeast Kentucky they would come into our classrooms once or twice a year and treat the floors with this mixture. AND the rooms were heated with coal stoves. This was in the early ‘60’s. Someone always slipped and fell, ruining their clothing. But that was just the way it was in those days. And we had outhouses for bathrooms. Just saying
