I keep coming back to this lecture every now and then, even though I have read the "Golden Legacy" book. It's such a fascinating story of how this company came to be, how it evolved etc. There is a lot more info in the actual book. If you are a fan of Little Golden Books, definitely get "Golden Legacy: How Golden Books Won Children’s Hearts, Changed Publishing Forever, and Became an American Icon Along the Way." I wish there was a separate book about the Golden Illustrators. They were so talented.

Couldn't agree less with her assessment that "knowing the language of sailors" isn't that important. I read the series first as a child before I'd ever sailed or or worked a day on a navy vessel. I then re-read the series after a 10 year career as a navy sailor, and joining a sailing club and I can say that you are absolutely missing out on intricately crafted details that O'Brian is weaving into the language that she dismisses.

He had me until the very end. Gets VERY political and opinionated, and it taints what was up until that point a fantastic lecture on history.

the first thing i did when i finished the series was pick up the first book and get right to reading it. I may never read anything else again. Having said that, It took 3 attempts of reading, quitting and starting over. It takes time to really get the prose and thus for the world to come to life.
