Sorry that this happened to you. As general rules for any touristy place . If a friendly person approach you, be cautious. If they use the word "my friend" run. If you want advice or directions buy a little things from the little humble shop and ask them for local advice. Some time you just need a local version of things (transportation or food) i have written so many name of the place for my Foreigner friends for taxi.

Thank you for the advice, We totally agree. Mark and I caught on and ended the scam, much to his annoyance. Oh yes! We do support the little humble shops or independent street stalls regularly.

Yes they scam you. They get a cut. Taxis, especially the ones at the airport, and tuktuk will scam the crap out of you. From a local who interviewed the taxi driver why they did this.
