Jeff Beck, Brian May, Tony Iommi, etc. all learned at the knee of Hank Marvin. He was hugely influential in guitar circles in Great Britain and Europe. Excellent video, as well.

When he is playing, you could see the joy or smiles and sometimes his gazing in the skies while he is playing gives me thought that he is thanking God, well I dont know but for me thats a good idea, why not?

Hank Marvin is a trailblazer, who transformed the English music scene playing his now iconic guitar sound and technique, “he’s my hero “ and documented my life with his hits and the Shadows, bloody-fantastic, work Hank. Thank you for your contribution to the pop music and my love of your music😂😂❤❤

How Hank kept his guitar in tune despite the constant use of the whammy bar is a mystery that this interview sadly failed to unravel.

Found this by accident and was fascinated. The books of Douglas-Hamiltons have been in my bookshelf since then, when I was a child. The affection towards the animals as can also be seen in the great work of Jane Goodall or other scientists surely have been a reason for my own decision to study biology and doing field research and conservation work.

Generations of guitarists have passed since 1958....and all see him as the inspiration with a big heart, whose modesty places him even higher on the podium of virtuosity in terms of electric guitar! Hats off to Hank for all the feats that rocked our youth and made us love the sound of the guitar!

I was slow to catch on to the brilliance of Hank's playing. Here in the US at least The Shadows were lumped in with "surf" music which has never appealed to me much. Listening to Hank more I hear a link between him and other players I greatly admire like Johnny Marr, Bill Frisell, and Tom Verlaine (RIP). And that TONE! It's mostly about note choice, touch, and phrasing of course, but Hank really has an ear for making his guitar sound perfect for the musical context.

Back in the 1980s I was obsessed with speed, shredders and fretboard flash but now I'm approaching my dotage, I finally understand Hank. The gaps between what he says with his fingers are just as important as the notes he plays. Read a novel as fast as you can and you miss every inflection and nuance but read it as Hank plays it and it comes alive.

I was a flashy widdly widdly guitarist in my youth, and I saw Hank as the opposite of everything I was impressed by (Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, etc). I once tried to prove that he was nothing special by trying to play Foot Tapper, and I failed miserably. What made it even more frustrating was that it doesn't sound difficult even when compared to other Shadows songs, but it kicked my arse. Now that I'm a better player, I've gone back to it, and while I can play it now, it's deceptively tricky. That fast ascending run in Peggy Sue looks like it'll be a challenge.
