I also have joined the club. I have only made ten pairs of socks to date. The first colorwork sock that I knit I thought I was being soooo careful to keep the floats loose, but it is still a struggle to get over the heel. I definitely want to do more colorwork, but am hesitant to start another one. I am reading any and all suggestions I can find. Thanks for sharing your experience....it makes me feel better. We WILL master this. Happy knitting!!

My story is quite similar to yours. My mom taught me how to chain and single crochet at 10, then when I was 11-12 I bought a book and taught myself more, and that’s when I really took off. About 2 years ago I started slowly learning how to knit, a small project here and there. This year I’ve really been expanding my skills beyond flat beginner projects. I finished a raglan sweater recently and the last few days I’ve been learning how to work dpns so I can knit socks!

I am a fairly new knitter and have recently in the past. Few months have started knitting socks. After a little trial and error, I think I finally got it!! as of right now I am only needing a basic vanilla sock but I’m still excited about it because the type of yarn and color of yarn makes even the basic vanilla sock exciting to knit! I love watching the sock come together I love watching the colors play off of each other and I just love everything about knitting socks. But I always wonder if I could consider myself a knitter if the only thing that I ever knit is socks? 🤔😀 I have a knitted sweater currently on the needles and all I have to do is that one sleeve but I am so burnt out from the time and effort it took me to make this sweater that I don’t even wanna go back to it right now but socks, nice, easy, portable. I love everything that you’ve said about them. !! ❤❤❤❤❤

Same thing happened to me and this is my first colorwork sock pattern :( I think I will try going up a size and try knitting it inside out.
@amaris-uhmariss-barela9118Ай бұрын
This happened to a pair I made and I had my mom put it on and then I blocked it. She has way smaller feet than me so she helped stretch the stitches slightly and then blocking helped a TON and then it fit.
@annarino07Ай бұрын
I’m so worried this will happen to me if I try color work! Especially with Summer’s patterns. I don’t have a particularly large foot (US women’s 7.5) but I have to knit her XL size in her book. I don’t that the skills yet to know how to scale that up, so I couldn’t knit a larger size to account for floats. I’m such a tight knitter too. I’m sure I’ll have some sock decorations in due time. 😅
@nataliebeauАй бұрын
Oooooh interesting!! I bet I just need to size up for her patterns! I’m a size 9 🤣😂
@annarino07Ай бұрын
@@nataliebeau maybe! I know it’s based on the foot width, but seems wild that even my width is considered XL. 🤪 I wonder if for your particular problem customizing the heel flap/gusset could get you more instep room? Honestly though, I’m as new to sock knitting as you (and I’ve never done color work or cables). Just seems like opening up the instep could help the color work past your heel. 🤷🏻
@ManateeTail123Ай бұрын
Hi, I’m a new subscriber. What’s your favorite heel turning technique?
@nataliebeauАй бұрын
If I want something that fits my foot really well I’ll do a heel flap, heel turn, and then the gusset technique! If I’m going for something quick and easy, I’ll do the German short row technique!

I love Summer Lee! I just bought her book actually. I did consider signing up to the her colour work cuff thing but I just don't have the skills for it yet. I just started knitting socks after stumbling across your sock cult video a couple of weeks ago. Just about to start on the toe of my second sock, in a few more rounds I will have my first pair of handmade socks thanks to you! I'm pretty new to knitting still and you've definitely inspired me to jump on the sock train and I'm loving it so thank you! It's such a shame the sock didn't fit, it's so cute! @soul00theeundeadАй бұрын
If the colorwork is tight here are some tips. Size up in needle size when doing colorwork than go back with reg size for body or when doing colorwork stretch the stitches as you knit colorwork pattern to lengthen the floats allowing stretch and lastly you can also try is knitting colorwork inside out so the floats stretch longer. I knit inside out for pretty much most projects because I knit with pin aka portuguese/ andean knitting so when i do colorwork i noticed it is stretchier with practice but yup colorwork is always finding good tension which just sometimes doesn't work out....fun to do though😊😮
@nataliebeauАй бұрын
Thank you!! I tried those thing the first time I knit colorowrk socks (and it worked) but I left some of them out this time… I think I was feeling a little too confident 😂😂😂

The same thing happened to me recently- I made those cute socks with the bats, I forget what they are called, and even made a bigger size to try to get it to fit, but it was still too small to go over my heel 😭 I learned some good stuff when knitting it so it’s fine, but now it’s in project jail until further notice

oh my gosh, that’s so tragic! i learned (the hard way) to cast on for the size up on colorwork socks because even perfect, loose floats add extra cushion that makes them fit tighter around the foot

I learned to knit, just because I wanted to knit socks. I followed Marly Bird from Red Heart, she taught a 4 video (maybe 5 ) series, and I learned using DPN’S we knitted house socks on size 5 needles, but then we had the 100% ability to knit them. Everyone loves hand knit socks, I work on them all year, they are my Christmas presents and they all look forward to them. 😎
