Yes! Why do people always want us to give away or monetise our hobbies?! If we want to sell what we make it's not a hobby, it's work (which is absolutely fine! But it's very different - and side note: you should pay the proper price no matter how much 'joy' the creator had while making something, it's still skill and time based, respect that). You do not have to make money off your hobby just because it creates a physical object, you simply do it because you love to do it. Other people have hobbies (like rock climbing/video gaming/swimming etc) that they cannot 'give' the "end result" away and their hobbies are respected and valued as things to do for the sheer enjoyment, they aren't told to monetise and find a way to commercialise their joy.

A tip I have is to take lots of notes if you get easily distracted. I'll forget what row I'm on mid row. Learn how to tink( unknit) your knitting so you don't rip out the entire project.

One more tip: Don't be afraid to deviate from the pattern. It's your project so do what you like ;)

Tip number nine resonates sooo much with me. The “omg you should sell that” gets so frustrating sometimes when you are just trying to make stuff to be happy and that’s it.

i agree with the 1 project at a time thing but honestly i think its more because i hyperfocus on one thing and work non stop until its done!!! hobbii & ribblr are also some of my fave places to find patterns, both free and paid. also learned that you dont specifically need those solid ring stitch markers, the small clip stitch markers have a lot more use!!!

I was a Art Major in college. I have always been big in crafting in every decade of my life. My family members are my biggest fans. I have made money occasionally on things I sew or craft. But it's not my main objective. I would love to come up with a pattern to sell (still working on that) but to knit or crochet something would definitely not make me money. I love to do both, but I am not the fastest or a master knitter. My son does not understand it. He thinks I should be working on my pattern and doesn't really understand it's a process for me. People are always telling me I could make money on something I make and most of the time I think they mostly mean it as a high compliment. When a family member says it though it just feels like pressure to me. LOL.

Yes! I do think people mean it as a compliment but it definitely puts pressure on the creator! And art takes time!! 😅😘

I'm totally with you on #9, I personally don't want to comodify my hobby. I really like preserving it as a thing I do for fun, and do slowly!

Hmm I use Ravelry on my I-phone, but then I’m part of the “older crowd” so maybe that’s just one of our super powers! 😂😂😂

Do you have a .pdf of the chart you showed of various fibers and their characteristics please? I looked on Michigan Fine Yarns website but couldn’t find it. Thanks.

So with you on the selling thing. Its mostly ppl who have no knitting/crafting experience and just say the first dumb thing that comes in their head. What they should say, is this is beautiful. Its someone you can't buy. Then it's possible to say the reason- which is the hours for handcrafted items means they are not mass production and that to sell handmade the price for actual return on time invested would give it a designer price tag, that you wouldn't want to spend. Also, this is my hobby. It gives me a break from my stressful day job. Why do I want to make this a not so sustainable business and then create deadlines and customers satisfaction issue? I enjoy it, leave me alone. I have a high powered job that more than pays the bills.
