I want to say that you saved my station here today. After the 1.8 update my system broke. I had originally installed from the R Pi image created at version 1.3 but the folks in VK land, but alas, that will no longer work for the updates 1.8 and beyond it seems. The only way I was able to figure all the setup out was following you with a clean install of 32 bit Bookworm on my aging R Pi 2B. I do have one question and that is how are folks tying into the SQ6KXY system using this software. You briefly showed the maping they use and originally I did run his software for a while and still have a valid login and PW for the system but cannot figure out where to set that up in the Station.config file. Thanks again for getting me through this oddly harsh installation. Sean KB8JNE

Glad you were able to get it going again. The SQ6KXY stuff is in the APRS UPLOAD SETTINGS section. You would need to make sure the following items are set. aprs_enabled = true aprs_user = your callsign aprs_pass = 5 digit passcode aprs_server = radiosondy.info aprs_port = 14590 Let me know if that gets you going.

Kind of expensive considering you could get the Yaesu FTM-200DE and have APRS hassle-free. I've made and carried a light on the go package that also doubles as a 50w transceiver.
@k9swx
@k9swx 17 күн бұрын
You could use a cheaper or used radio as well with the Mobilinkd TNC3/TNC4. That's just the radio I had to test it out with. I don't think the FTM-200 connects to an iPhone or iPad so that wouldn't work without the Mobilinkd TNC3/TNC4 anyway. Personally I'm not going to carry a mobile rig on my back to go for a short walk or hike nor do I want 50 watts right next to my head. Plus the cost of rails and bags to turn the mobile rig into a go pack sometimes costs more than the radio itself. But it works for you that is great! You have to choose the radio that works in your situation.

@@k9swx Ah, I see you’ve mastered the art of overthinking a simple solution. Kudos! If carrying a mobile rig feels like a herculean task to you, no judgment-maybe stick to stationary setups? As for the '50 watts next to your head' comment, don't worry, it's RF, not Chernobyl. But hey, if your iPhone connectivity is a non-negotiable priority, I can totally see how that’s the dealbreaker here. To each their own, right?

I just got my FT5D a few days ago, I put my callsign in and everything, then I tried to make a contact with a buddy on both 154.750 and 462.750 MHz and on some GMRS/FRS channels but every time I press the PTT button the radio beeps and says "TX Inhibit"on the screen an it does not transmit. I've looked online and I haven't found anything on this issue, or anything in the manual. I was hoping someone would have insight on this but I no reviews talk about it, it seems to work straight out of the box for most reviewers.

Those frequencies are outside of the ham frequencies. You would have to get the radio modified to get it to transmit on those frequencies. It's usually done by a ham dealer for a small fee. Look up MARS mod.
@DarwinHorvath
@DarwinHorvath 2 ай бұрын
@@k9swx It also can't transmit on any other freq.
@k9swx
@k9swx 2 ай бұрын
The radio will only transmit between 144-148 MHz and 430-450 MHz. Try resetting the radio and see if that fixes it. You might also check to make sure your offset is correct. If it's trying to transmit outside the band then that could be why it's showing up as TX Inhibit.

Thank you for the review! This is the only direct conversion radio I own that doesn't pick up this nasty ubiquitous QRM on 442.000. That noise is everywhere! All other direct conversion Retevises, Tidradios, Radioddities, Wouxuns etc pick it up just like Fengs do. This is surprising given that the ft-65 is based on the ancient 1846 chip. Great review! After some very frustrating experiences with the Chinese DMR radios I purchased the Icom ID-52. iCom's without a doubt, has the most user friendly menus and I found programming to be very easy, both from the radio as well as the software. The only problem I had with the ID-52 was the lack of D-Star repeaters in my travel areas, so I purchased a FT5DR. I'm not too concerned with APRS vs DPRS although it would make so much more sense for iCom to use APRS. I must say, I share your dislikes with the FT5DR and wish the ID-52A had some of the features of the FT5DR. One additional issue I have with the FT5 is it short battery life compared to my ID-52, I can go all day with one battery on my ID-52 where I need at least one spare for the FT5 if I'm using it all day. Wouldn't it be great if we could combine the best features of both HTs two into one radio!
@k9swx
@k9swx 5 ай бұрын
Yeah I'm tempted to sell the FT5 and put the money towards an ID-52 and then use something like the FT65 and TNC3/4 for APRS on my phone. Don't like to have to carry 2 radios around though. The Kenwood TH-D75 looks intriguing but it's super expensive and chunky. Be fine for a desktop HT but not sure I'd want to hike with it. Maybe a used TH-D74 might work.
