Don't think I'm stupid but, would a heat lamp help if you have a long cold spell,is it took much power lost, or do they handle the cold??
@bigcountryslittlehomestead4 күн бұрын
@@robertparrish5262 I don't use a heat lamp because chickens will be chickens and a heat lamp inside a coop with bigger chickens is asking for a BBQ. Many people have lost their entire flocks and chicken coops because of heat lamps causing fires. Plus... I use the deep litter method... and a heat lamp on the inside of my wooden coops and my setup is a big NO-NO!!!!
@bigcountryslittlehomestead4 күн бұрын
@@robertparrish5262Also, chickens during the day want to be outside... even when it's cold. So a heat lamp outside the coop ain't going to do nothing.... but run up your electric bill.
@bigcountryslittlehomestead4 күн бұрын
Now if you had an all-metal setup.... and didn't use the deep litter method and kept the area free from straw, etc. you could probably run a heat lamp more safely and rock-in-roll that way. Most big poultry producers use something similar but they also are working with way more land, a bigger budget, and more money overall for overhead costs usually.

Looks like a great setup. I'm hoping to get something up and running to raise some layers this spring. The goal is to have a setup similar to yours,for eggsactly the reasons you mentioned. The food supply chain had proven to be faulty/compromised. I live in Canada on the East Coast under dictator Trudeau. I feel it has become paramount to grow your own food,as much as you possibly can with what space you have. Great. Video and subscribed.👍👍

You can do it. It just takes time. I've had to work through and think about a lot of different things because of what I wanted in my setup. Thanks for watching.

Mine won't eat them raw, only cooked. They don't like onions either but they will eat the tops of green onions from my garden bed. I've had chickens for almost a year. I've been so surprised about what they will eat! I especially wasn't aware of how much they enjoy meat, even tiny naked baby birds that fall out of our tree😅
@bigcountryslittlehomestead13 күн бұрын
Probably because how hard certain types are... but it's not got anything to do with it being a potato though. Younger chickens and smaller breeds have a hard time eating them if they aren't peeled or cut in 1/2. The ones I fed in this video are some that had went bad... and softened up quite a bit. So... it makes since that you say yours only eat them if they are cooked. Raw... some potatoes are harder than others... and if unpeeled or not cut in half... they have a hard time breaking them up. But if you cut them in 1/2... there's not a doubt in my mind that your chickens will eat them raw... unless... you've got them spoiled with certain types of feed... etc.
@bigcountryslittlehomestead13 күн бұрын
Also, if chickens are overfed corn... or certain types of grains that are sweeter... they will turn down healthy greens, potatoes, etc. but that's easy to solve. All you have to do is cut back on their feed a little... to where they get more hungry... and they'll stop being so picky and will actually eat what's healthier for them. Chickens if overfed corn... will get addicted to it... and become slightly pickier... but cut back on the feed sweet corn and sweet feed... they'll stop being picky.

@@bigcountryslittlehomestead they get layers crumbles and a little scratch but lots of kitchen scraps and access to the compost pile keeps them very happy. I'm enjoying your "small" homestead videos. I only have 6 hens in my backyard but I have plans for 6 more when spring rolls around. I appreciate your efforts to teach the rest of us.

BC, is Rocko that White Leghorn or what breed is he?
@bigcountryslittlehomestead13 күн бұрын
No... that white mixed one... is one of my youngest roosters up and coming. Rocko is in my 3rd coop and run with my current laying hens. Rocko is a dark sussex/brahma mix. The white young rooster is a white sussex/brahma mix. Similar breed... different color variation.
