Don't think I'm stupid but, would a heat lamp help if you have a long cold spell,is it took much power lost, or do they handle the cold??

@@robertparrish5262 I don't use a heat lamp because chickens will be chickens and a heat lamp inside a coop with bigger chickens is asking for a BBQ. Many people have lost their entire flocks and chicken coops because of heat lamps causing fires. Plus... I use the deep litter method... and a heat lamp on the inside of my wooden coops and my setup is a big NO-NO!!!!

@@robertparrish5262Also, chickens during the day want to be outside... even when it's cold. So a heat lamp outside the coop ain't going to do nothing.... but run up your electric bill.

Now if you had an all-metal setup.... and didn't use the deep litter method and kept the area free from straw, etc. you could probably run a heat lamp more safely and rock-in-roll that way. Most big poultry producers use something similar but they also are working with way more land, a bigger budget, and more money overall for overhead costs usually.
