Ive lost my pin one that locks in between impeler and driveshaft, what should I do...

www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0300611 This should be the part you’re looking for. If you need it in a hurry, I would take this part number to any local boat shop and see if they have one in stock.

Super nice video on how to do this.👍 I just followed these steps while installing a whole new waterpump kit on my 1980 9.9 Evinrude. No water had been coming out of the exhaust or the telltale stream so I was sure this would fix it. I tested it with muffs and let it run for about 45 seconds, and no water from the exhaust or telltale. Can you tell me what to check next? Thanks

Was the old rubber impeller in one piece still when you took it out? If not, some of the rubber chunks might be blocking the waterways throughout the engine. It’s also possible you picked up some sand or something of that nature that’s blocking the waterways. I’ve also seen the water waves around the head accumulate hard water deposits enough to start washing stuff, which could be a problem. It might be worth it to take your thermostat out and verify it that it’s working properly also. I would start by taking the lower unit off again, and putting some compressed air through the pick up tube and see if it comes out anywhere. I wouldn’t use high-pressure, about 20ish psi is all. Verify that the the key for the impeller didn’t fall out at some point during reassembly.

I noticed that you didn't remove the welch plugs, clean then replace. Shouldn't that be done as well?
@wetshoesmechanicАй бұрын
If it’s been sitting with ethanol blended gas it it’s not a bad idea to do the welch plugs also. Usually blasting all of the ports with carb cleaner is enough to clean up the cavities behind the welch plugs. I thought about adding it to the video, but it’s tough to show how much pressure to put on a welsh plug in a video, and I didn’t want people to damage the carburetors dealing with the plugs. But if people feel comfortable swapping the plugs out, they probably already know how to do It, was my thought process. I might dedicate a video for swapping the plugs out at some point. Thanks for mentioning it!

Thank you very much for your videos. I have an 85 Evinrude 15hp that I re built my carb and fuel pump watching your videos. Very good information. I have a question regarding an issue I am currently experiencing after the rebuilds. I have dialed in the idle and it now trolls great however after trolling for awhile I will give it throttle and it will bog down and barely run like the carb is loaded up. I’m not sure what I need to adjust. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank You!
@wetshoesmechanic2 ай бұрын
Two strokes have a tendency of loading up if you’re idling around really slow for long periods of time. That might be the bogging sensation you’re getting on takeoff. If it smokes pretty bad and comes out of the bogging issue after you takeoff it’s probably just load up. Keep in mind the fuel and the oil both go through the crank case before they go into the combustion chamber and that’s where the load up usually happens. If you think it’s more than that, I would try replacing your spark plugs and verify the correct gap on the spark plugs. It’s not a bad idea to have a couple of spare spark plugs with you anyway especially if you’re trolling a lot with a two-stroke. The load up can eventually foul them.

@@wetshoesmechanic Thank you for your reply. I did put in new plugs. Yeah it will come out of it after 15-30 seconds. Maybe I just need to run it open more often when trolling. Thanks again for your help and your great videos.

thank you so much. just bought an 83 9.9 and I'm changing the water pump this weekend. Do I need to lubricate either end of the drive shaft when I reinstall everything?
@wetshoesmechanic3 ай бұрын
A little bit of grease on the splines on the part of the shaft that connects to the motor isn’t a bad idea. It helps displace water to keep it rust free.

i appreciate your videos... i was able to check and verify that I have spark to both plugs from your other video.... I also have verified fuel going to the carb.... but no pop of any kind when I try to start the motor... does that indicate that I may have a gunked up card/jet, and need to rebuild it? or chemically clean it? thanks for you no-nonsense videos. ;o)

Wonderful video. I would’ve been lost without it. However, I noticed that when putting on the final metal plate with the “U”, the orientation changes from 19:19 when you show the finished assembly to when you install it on the motor at 19:36. I originally had it installed like it was at 19:19 but then switched it to how you have it on the motor because this seems correct. Just an FYI for you and anyone else using this video to get the correct orientation that this minute detail was not acknowledged. Thanks!

Make sure you let people know they must remove the bolt on the shift shaft for the lower unit to drop out. It took me a while even after hearing one mechanic say that….. it just looked like it should come apart without totally removing that bolt.

Engine dying when put in gear? Pump or carbie?
@wetshoesmechanic7 ай бұрын
I would start with the carburetor. Rotate your slow speed needle valve clockwise until it seats. Do not force it. Once it seats rotate it counterclockwise 1.5 turns and try that. You may have to fine-tune it after that, but that should allow it to run at least. Make sure the idle adjustment screw on the side of the motor is turned up high enough to allow it to idle at a reasonable RPM. If after all of that, you suspect fuel delivery problem, I would verify that your fuel line is in good shape and flowing fuel freely to the fuel pump. Also, make sure that the vent in your fuel tank is working properly. If needed, after all of that, I would throw in a carb rebuild kit, and plan on doing your fuel pump also. Keep in mind there are other considerations that could be a problem. These are the simplest things to fix, but there is also throttle linkage timing, reed valves, cylinder compression, and making sure the gearbox is free to move to consider also.

I have a 1976 Evinrude we have used for years (since new)........never have changed the water pump :/ maybe we should?
@wetshoesmechanic7 ай бұрын
The impeller is pretty cheap, and just to be on the safe side. I would change it out at least every couple years. Even if it’s not weather checked, or falling apart, the fins lose their elasticity over the years and you will lose water pressure over time. If you wait too long, the impeller blades can start deteriorating and falling apart and once that happens, they get into the waterways inside the block, and they become problematic to get out later.

Absolutely great video. Thank you very much. Just rebuilt my fuel pump. Question. I squeeze the bulb and I cannot seem to eliminate all the air bubbles out of the line. The bulb gets rock hard and stays rock hard when engine is running. Could it be a defective bulb? Any other causes for the air bubbles?
@wetshoesmechanic7 ай бұрын
If you’re having trouble with air getting into your fuel line, I would check your connection points at the fuel tank, and at the engine, mainly the O-ring in the fitting. If your fuel lines, or bulb are old and weathered, I would replace them. Even a small compromise in your fuel line could introduce air into the system. Question though, how do you know you have air bubbles in your fuel line? What are the symptoms?

I am in the process of reworking a 1982 15 hp Evinrude. Where can I get accurate information on part numbers for ordering the various kits to rebuild the carb., fuel pump, etc. When I put the information in Google I get suppliers that list a page full of kits. P.S. You give great and accurate steps on the rebuild and checking parts for this motor. Thanks

I bought a shop manual for mine, and it contains dire warnings about not removing the drive shaft, else you will need to disassemble the lower unit in order to realign the pinion gear. And of course, I accidentally pulled it out a few inches while trying to clean off the shaft. Now sitting here wondering if I need to tear it all apart, then I find this video where you remove the shaft and reinstall like it is no big deal. Wondering what I am missing.
@wetshoesmechanic8 ай бұрын
It’s possible the pinion gear shifted inside the gearbox just enough to make the shaft Alignment tough. With a flashlight try to look down the hole and with a pick, or even a stiff metal rod you can try to realign it enough for the shaft to fall into the gear. I’ve never had trouble with the 15 hp, but I have struggled with a 2 hp that has this problem. Worst case scenario you might have to pull the gearbox end off to get in there to realign the gear. It’s not too bad if you have to get into that.

@@wetshoesmechanic Thank you for the reply. I had tried to put the shaft back in, and it would shift into reverse but not forward. On the advice of another friend, I turned the shaft slowly while trying to shift it into forward, and it eventually went. I put it back together and it seems to be working fine now. The manual I bought is horrible; tries to cover decades worth of motors and jumps around a lot. I would have been better off going straight to KZbin. It's an old motor that used to belong to my dad... After he passed over 20 years ago, I had the local outboard shop winterize it, then I packed it in a crate. I hadn't planned on leaving it there quite this long, but with new plugs, new water pump, and fresh gear lube it appears to be good to go again.
