@@wetshoesmechanic I didn't mean you. I meant too much blabber in other people's videos. Anyway...I got my little 1978 Johnson 15 hp sorted out after trying some ignition checks you suggested. It had no spark on number one. The plugs were okay so I replaced the number 1 coil. Still no spark. Then I put a new power pack on it. Still no good. Today I checked the contacts inside that 4 prong plug like you showed for checking the trigger and stator. They were within specs. Turns out the problem was the power pack but the brand new coil I installed first was defective. In that case it would make no difference what else I replaced. Who would suspect a brand new coil to be defective? That can really make it a head scratcher. Anyway, I'm happy it's working again. I love that little engine. Thanks for the video. Any idea why year old ignition coils for a similar motor would be reading resistances well below spec (and one coil reading half the resistance of the other)?
@wetshoesmechanic Жыл бұрын
Hard to say, without inspecting the engine, but a few things could contribute to this. Even though the coils are not that old to you, they may have been made many years ago, sitting on a shelf for all these years, and the plastic around the coils could have been damaged Due to shipping or miss handling even before they got to you. Keep in mind that some of these parts for these older motors were manufactured many years ago. I would also check and make sure that you have the correct spark plug and spark plug gap. if the spark plug gap is too large, it could be causing unnecessary strain on the coil, causing them to burn up prematurely. Same could be said about the spark plug wires. If they’re old and compromise, a coil could be trying to push power through them and putting strain on the coil’s again.

I might have a chance to do a video later this year but as of right now the motor is up at the lake several hours away so when I bring it home for the winter is when I’m planning on trying to do more videos. Here’s a thought though, process of elimination. Run through the components you can check and test and if everything else works out outside of your power pack and you’re still having trouble then you could just plan on your power back having an issue. Good luck to you.

This video is great. Will this testing tell me if the points and whatever coils that r under the flywheel are good or is that a separate test. Also my white black wire has exposed wire near that barrel connector. Can it just be taped.
@wetshoesmechanic2 жыл бұрын
The motor in the video does not have points, so that will be a different test. If you have exposed wires there’s a potential for crossover in which case could cause ignition parts to fail. I don’t know if electrical tape would be the best course of action being that close to the connector, if you can find a replacement plug for that wiring harness with some wires that are still sticking out of it in good shape you could potentially splice back into the wires that you currently have. If you Google it you can find waterproof 12v connectors. I would use something like that to splice them back together.

hey there. I have a 12" very light weight aluminum boat with a 85 8hp Johnson outboard. I'm not able to get up to full speed. It only get's up to about 7mph. Also it bogs out and dies intermittently when cruising across the lake. Most of the time I have to open the choke to start it back up even when it's not cold and has been running. I changed out the pump bulb and got a new gas tank. I'm wondering if my gas line may be bad or too big in diameter. Would size matter if it is? It's 3/8". I rebuilt the carb, fuel pump and changed the plugs. Next I'm going to do an ignition test that you have a video on to make sure everything is firing right. I'm completely baffled and could use some help. Thanks a ton, Chris
@wetshoesmechanic2 жыл бұрын
If it starts right back up after it died with the help of your choke I would say it’s fuel related. The diameter of the fuel line between 5/16” and 3/8” really shouldn’t matter on that motor. I would also check your connection points on the fuel line to make sure the O ring in the connection hasn’t failed. It might be Siphoning the air from the connections and not allowing enough fuel into the carburetor and running the carburetor empty. It’s also possible that your fuel line might be contaminated and breaking apart. I usually just go down to the auto parts store and get automotive fuel line as a cheap replacement. If you suspect that your fuel line is coming apart you may have to take your carburetor back apart and make sure it’s all cleaned out again. On the ignition side of things a coil that is failing will sometimes cut out after it warms up. But usually they have to cool off a bit before they will fire again. I would check the coil casings for any cracks and replace them if you see it. I’m still leaning towards a fuel problem though. Good luck to you!

Thank you very much for taking the time to help us out. It is greatly appreciated. Question, my 9.9 Johnson that I just bought doesn’t have any boots on the spark plug wires. Just the metal connectors from the wires to the plugs. They are both exposed. Is that a big issue?
@wetshoesmechanic3 жыл бұрын
I would try to find some boots to put back on there. If you touch them at all while It’s running you’re going to feel it for sure. Technically it’ll probably still work the way you have it set up, but if spark plug wires are compromised it can put a strain on the rest of your ignition system and start breaking down parts on your ignition system.

Hey, great video. I ran through all of these testings and everything is ok, but my motor still won't start. I believe that the power pack is the problem, but I'm not 100% sure. So, if every other reading is within the specifications, that means that the power pack needs to be replaced?
@wetshoesmechanic3 жыл бұрын
Possibly. Check for spark and if you don’t have any spark then I would look at your power pack if everything else is checking out OK. If you have spark at all it would probably be a fuel related problem.
@borjansarenac45833 жыл бұрын
@@wetshoesmechanic So I replaced the power pack and the motor starts just fine. But, now I can't turn it off because the killswitch won't work. Do you know what could be causing this trouble? And thank you
@wetshoesmechanic3 жыл бұрын
So a kill switch works by grounding out the ignition system back to the block. If the Killswitch isn’t working it might be because the Killswitch itself might have some corrosion inside the contact points of the switch. It’s also Possible that one of the two wires going out to the Killswitch is either disconnected or cut somewhere. The engine will run as long as the circuit is open. As soon as the circuit gets closed that’s when it shuts off the engine. I would set your voltmeter to ohms and start checking continuity within the circuit. I start with your switch. You should have no continuity with it just sitting there. As soon as you push the Killswitch you should have continuity.

@wetshoesmechanic2 жыл бұрын
Check the insulation around your coils really well. If they’re cracked at all replace them. The points and condenser are cheap enough parts that while you have the fly wheel off I would just replace those anyway. The condenser is essentially capacitor. Either the condenser or the insulation around the coils has probably failed if you’re not getting any spark and if you’ve eliminated all other possible issues.

@wetshoesmechanic Жыл бұрын
Make sure you’re reading the multimeter in ohms. If you suspect that the reading is incorrect, try a different multimeter. If you suspect that you have a power supply problem from the stater and you were getting that kind of reading then it’s possible the stater is shot. Check the wires from the stater all the way down to there end point to make sure that they’re not bare and rubbing on anything. If they have ground it out, it’s possible that it could have killed your stater, but you’ll want to look at that before replacing it to make sure the new wires don’t create the same problem.

@wetshoesmechanic2 жыл бұрын
I would consider starting with your fuel system. Clean the carbs, check the fuel lines, make sure the tanks venting properly. When it’s on muffs you can’t actually rev it up and put it under load like you would in water, and at low idol speeds “on muffs” it’s just sipping gas so it doesn’t appear to have an issue when it’s on muffs. hi sir I want to buy a speedboat. Evinrude 9.9 year 1983 to work as a fisherman. Every day I run about 70 km advise me is a good heavy duty motor? thank you very much
@wetshoesmechanic2 жыл бұрын
These are pretty solid motors if they’ve been taken care of during their life. As long as you put good Gasoline in them, and good quality TCW3 oil these motors will last a long time. Try to stay away from any ethanol blend gasoline, but if you can’t you should definitely run some stabilizer in it every time you fill up. Check the gearbox from time to time to make sure you haven’t picked up any fishing line around the prop seal so that the gearbox isn’t filling full of water. If it hasn’t been done yet, you should take the carburetor apart and replace the cork float with a plastic one. The fuel pump diaphragms would be another good thing to replace before heading out on long trips like you’re suggesting. If you’re going to use it for primarily idling around at trolling speeds two strokes have a tendency of loading up so there may be a slight carburetor adjustments on the fly that is needed, but they put a rich/lean screw on the front of the motor specifically for that reason. If you’re buying this motor secondhand and you don’t feel comfortable looking at it yourself, you should definitely have mechanic give it a once over before heading out on a trip that long. Don’t forget to take spare spark plugs, and a means to change them, especially if you’re idling a lot. I haven’t had a problem with them fowling in this motor, but it’s cheap insurance. The starter recoil spring is really the only thing that I’ve ever had problems with this motor with. It’s 39 year old spring steel so it’s possible to break the spring just from using it at this point in its life, also I’ve had the spring retainer end pop out of its slot once before unexpectedly. Outside of that I’ve never had a problem with this motor.

this doesn't necessarily relate but can i ask you a question about the shifting mechanism? my shifter is stuck in forward, what would be my first place to look? i have a 80 9.9
@wetshoesmechanic3 жыл бұрын
It’s possible that the coupler between the lower unit and the med unit isn’t fully assembled. It’s possible to only partially assemble the shift rod into the coupler and re-tighten the screw, which essentially changes the length of your shift throw which would cause you to keep from being able to shift outside of the range with the gearbox would allow you to. Check out my other video about replacing the water pump, I go over the linkage in that video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5fWgWyAg5KrmrM

@wetshoesmechanic2 жыл бұрын
Full disclosure, in the video I tested the wrong side of the plug for the stator. I’m in the process of reworking the video to show that. With that being said, if you test the stater and you don’t have a reading it’s possible the wires going to the stator are compromised, or the stator itself is broke. If you’re only getting spark out of one spark plug it’s possible one of the coils has failed, but it’s also possible that your stater is giving you fits if it has failed. Sometimes when one electrical component fails on these motors it will take others with it.
