Maybe a good way of describing this version of immersion is the "dopamine hit" genre. For example, casino-style or cookie clicker level of immersion, where you're not really doing anything of inherent value, just triggering automatic responses in your brain.

Hey! Very useful. Do you recall what the formula for your Ratio is in the feature spreadsheet? I'd like to replicate something similar but I'm not seeing the pattern...

Great presentation and video. Thanks for this. Heh, thank god for the day job, because I'm going to be releasing a DRPG that will be so niche it may as well not exist. But you know, it's fun so, I'm doing it. But yeah, $1700 a month would not even be a quarter of my day job's income. Couldn't even pay rent with that, honestly. So for me, the why bother bit is, well for fun. It's fun for me to make a game, and I'm also a musician so I also spend a good deal of time making music. Game music yes, but also just doing some prog rock for the heck of it. So these things are just what I do for fun. But, the first-person, turn-based, DRPG genre is just not getting the love it could have, so I figure, this is a good one to have a go at. As far as halving the scope, I've done that, but I kinda feel like if the game is completed and then what you didn't use, or what you've cut, could potentially find its way into a next game. So, I don't throw anything away. You didn't say throw away, but I'm just saying. I have this same approach in my music, so I never have a shortage of new stuff later on, even if in the first project doesn't have room for that. The gamedev grind is real, in terms of the sheer amount of work that has to be done. Although, I don't know, I tend to always have a good time doing it, but maybe my brain is broken!

Would using more technology would cause you to think that the technology is less immersive, like if you use a washing machine or microwave alot,

I hope you're still working on stuff, I would love to see what else you can make! If you make something like this again, I would heavily suggest making the soundtrack a bit more dynamic. The song that was playing during the reveal at the very end threw off the vibes pretty hard, didn't drive the emotion that I was feeling due to the reveal so I had to mute the music for the final section. Other than that I don't have any complaints so far with my first playthrough.
@filiphracek
@filiphracek Ай бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, the music needs to be more dynamic. I didn't have the technology for Knights of San Francisco but I know how to do it now. I'm working on a different genre now (giantrobotgame.com) but I hope to return to KoSF and make a prequel.

the thing thats most hard for me is to find best practice solutions for things i wanna add to the game :D like an inventory or update system for my character etc. :D sure there are a lot of videos and forums for different topics but a lot of times im just lost xD do u have some good sources to find stuff like that? I was in Unity and now im using Godot :D

I don't think I have a good answer for this. Like you, when I have a problem, I'm searching through the internet, and often find bits and pieces on random forums. What helped me was to realize that sometimes, it's more valuable and faster to 1) try to implement stuff myself, 2) learn about all the problems of that approach, 3) rewrite. This is imho better compared to 1) find and learn a best practices, 2) decide which is best for me, 3) implement it.

I really FEEL this video. Years and years of gradually learning solo game dev in the background of life... Forcing myself to take the scope down to a quarter is very realistic and may actually lead to a finished project, rather than a 20 year struggle.

Haha, well congrats to you, I’m 1 year in and blindly walking forward day by day, knowing that at some point the scope will have to change drastically but for now I’m willingly living in denial doing design and making art assets. I reckon the point when I take this stuff into unreal and realise I can’t code and don’t know blueprint will be the cliff edge. Best of luck with your project 👍

I'm still figuring this out, to be honest. I'm releasing this on Steam at some point, and while I know it's possible (there are at least 2 Flutter games on Steam already), the exact work required is still a mystery to me. I hope to have and publish a walkthrough at some point. FWIW, releasing on itch.io is super simple. You just build for desktop (or even web), and sent the zip file.

Thank you! Yeah, I was actually surprised how much of a gameplay improvement the smoke grenade was. I know it's me playing it, so it might not translate to actual player satisfaction, but I feel there's just a lot more interesting decisions going on. Where do I put my next smoke grenade? Do I try to start a fire in that forest over there? Do I hide or do I run?
@cristiancosneanu
@cristiancosneanu 2 ай бұрын
@@filiphracek Definitely! I also was thinking that since the smoke physics are in place you could add different types of gas clouds, like a low visibility but it also ignites and deals massive AOE damage, this could be used in different tactical situations, and expand the gameplay.

I'll be honest with you I can less about the money. I don't mind making money but it's not a priority
@filiphracek
@filiphracek 2 ай бұрын
That's a great approach. At some point, though, money is needed to justify the huge amount of time spent on a project. Family, rent, food - all these things need money, and unless you're making a tiny game, it's good to know that by working on the game you are bringing at least a little bit of money to the table.
@dakotah4866
@dakotah4866 2 ай бұрын
@@filiphracek no I'm somewhat on my own I don't believe in rent and all that other stuff brother rather have a place of my own or just travel around in like a modified truck or an RV or something at this point. I'm trying to grow food myself or fishing or hunting the money is not really a priority. After extensive research it's more of a slave mentality to just give away your life to a 9 to 5 unless you're doing stuff for yourself but even then you got to get out of the false reality mindset and live within the moment not worry about all the other stuff of a house that isn't really yours and rent.

Honestly these days I youtube search first before I try to find the info anywhere else. KZbin search often enough also comes with a personal expert that teaches you what to even look for. For example the other day, I was looking for electric coffee grinder, and i found coffee expert youtuber with 2M subscribers, that taught me how different types of burs affect the final taste of the coffee. So when i was looking into reviews of some grinders I had way better idea of what to look for. Even STEM questions often lead you to your answer faster than trough the ad filled Google search.

My problem with google is 1. I cannot block search results. 2. Google prefer websites with trackers. 3. Google prefers mass media websites. I want to block all mass media websites. BBC, CNN and so on... So they never show up in search results at all. I want peoples internet not corporations and governments propaganda. Even youtube. Look up some subject like war or earthquake in some place or whatever along those lines. 99% of channels will be mass media channels. I vey much doubt that people actually experiencing event event did not film and upload. I know many people do, but I don't care about news anymore. I got tired of constantly bad news. As you said in one video, bad news are good news. It is never ending pit of bad news and propaganda. I don' t want to take that in anymore. My life won't get better, only worse if anything. In this word multiple bad events happen every second. Loudest news will reach me one way or another anyway. And this is why I avoid mass media as much as possible, but they are on top google search results. Thinking to make plugin that will filter web content and remove anything linked to these websites i have blacklisted.

I JUST discovered Kagi about two hours ago. I went from their Free tier, to their $5 tier, to their $10 tier within an hour. (Probably going to their top tier next month.) I have not been this excited for search since....well since I discovered GOPHER back in '98. The introduction of Google was great but we had searches before. Google just felt like a refined version of that. So it was great but it didn't feel like something massively new. Kage does feel like a return to a better search. The reason being is the enshittification of search over the last 10 years. It is like swimming through sewage and then being dumped into the ocean and sunlight. It is so much better. I just discovered the ability to prioritize or deprioritize domains and had a geekgasm. Its little stuff like that is missing in anything Google. Now its just shoving AI down your throat, even if consumers want it or not. Kagi is doing it right. Have it as an option, not a requirement.
