That's a very important discussion. The fact that WHO recently acknowledged "Gaming Disorder" as a legit disorder by adding to the ICD-11 suggests that it's time to discuss this matter deeper. Thanks for sharing your stories and your perspective! As an early career researcher towards games for education in Brazil (started learning Flutter because of that hehe), I find this kind of video very interesting!

Something interesting I’ve noticed, some of the best developers I know were/are gamers. I feel like there is some overlap with the reward systems of building software and gaming.

Yes! That's actually a part of the sneaky "learning" in GIANT ROBOT GAME. I noticed how many people, when asked about their first programming experience, say something like "QuakeC" or "Minecraft modding". I hope I can provide a game that's basically asking to be modded, and makes it easy to do so.

I've played my fair share of games with the past-midnight adventures that go with it. I did quests with my clan members, defeating bosses while others my age were going out, getting drunk maybe doing some dr*gs. So I never saw gaming as a bad thing. I actually studied Game Design but never intended to work at AAA companies. I am mostly interested in gamification. Making everyday chores enjoyable. This is what I would like to focus on. And yes, there are companies that try to milk children (and adults) for their money, but which industry isn't. Just look at food, cookies sold with child focused characters, full of sugar. Guess it is up to us to do better.

> Guess it's up to us to do better. Oh man, I wish I ended the video with these exact words. Thanks for this. As for the fact that other industries also milk customers, that's true. But I struggle to come up with examples of many other industries that weaponize addiction mechanisms the way the gaming industry does at this point. That's why I'm not willing to let the gaming industry off the hook that easily.
@SEGVeenstra
@SEGVeenstra 10 ай бұрын
@@filiphracek sure, and they shouldn't be left off the hook. I think what you said about regulations for other industries, like casino's is a great point. Although it will probably mean certain genre's of games will die with it, since some are build around the whole manipulation and will probably not be sustainable without it. Is that bad? I don't know, maybe not.

Truly agree with you... What we can hope is those game company to drdually translate their games towards more educational content. Like a movie can be nice to watch and yet educational..

I know what you mean by "old-school", but fair "old-school" business practices is not just a games issue. It feels like everything is moving to a "modern" subscription service.

Is there a tutorial to build this amazing modelviewer you have in the background?

Not that particular model viewer but my drawVertices tutorial (on this channel) is talking about the basics of such things.

I agree with you, most videos game makers only think about how to make money, and this is due to several reasons, including their influence by successful ancient video game makers etc.....

I agree, playing piano is definitely more valuable than cs. Especially making you more noticeable in your social groups. Also the "R LEG" blinking animation is looking really nice. How hard was it to make it render on top of the robot?

Since the whole thing (the 3D object and the label) is in one CustomPainter, it's just a question of making that canvas.draw call at the end. And since it's in the same code, it's also easy to figure out where to put it (I have the 3D-to-2D transformation matrix ready).
@cristiancosneanu
@cristiancosneanu 10 ай бұрын
@@filiphracek Oh, i didn't think of that, neat. So is the "R LEG" label and position encoded in the .obj file?
@filiphracek
@filiphracek 10 ай бұрын
@@cristiancosneanu No, the OBJ file is just the model, and I'm too scared to extend that file format with my own stuff. (Plus it's possible I'll migrate to a more efficient 3D file format in the future.) But I have an umbrella structure for entities that has the 3D file, but also things like "where's which part located".
