was this in turkish or arabic tuning? my guess would be arabic but then again I could be wrong. Also is this piece in maqam kurd. watched the original trio playing and the clarinet gives me maqam kurd vibes if you know what I mean but again I could be wrong. It might sound like nahawand but I'm sticking with Maqam Kurd

The part where ara dinjian talks about picking your own style is tough especially for complete beginners myself and kinda resonates with me in a way. I've watched and continue to watch so many Oud players and I sometimes focus on the way Oud players pluck the strings and in my somewhat 2 months of playing the oud I've tried to orient their style of playing. I guess its a case of trial and error during your learning process. Also my Oud is need of repair, headstock is cracked so I cant play but I've found a luthier though somewhat far ill make sure to show gratitude!!!!!

Curious do ouds sell for $6400 often? Never thought the oud biz would turn into a banking profit type of hobby! 👏🏻
@lordofthestrings_heritage4 ай бұрын
It's not a hobby, it's a full time profession that I've been doing for a long time. I do sell my ouds often, in fact the only oud I have available is the one I just finished making. I provide a quality that is in par with my guitars or violins made by any experienced luthier. How much do you think I should earn that takes about 2-3 months to complete ? I think in Iran they charge $4000 and up. Good for them for getting what they deserve. That drives quality up. Good luck. Try this craft yourself and see what it's like, then we'll talk.

Could you use 2 classical guitar strings sets with the oud? Why the top is not being finished? after all classical guitars tops are finished with some kind of finish. (Dirt and grime will not benefit the top in any way). Looking at the head design, I think that the design of the peg head is completely wrong, strings should not go into the peg box with all kind of angles (It looks nice but it creates tuning problems and it's kind of ridiculous), is there any oud makers that solved this issue with a bigger peg box? also it's time to use planetary pegs it's 2024.
@lordofthestrings_heritage4 ай бұрын
Dani , thank you for the comment. I also make Classical guitars, so I can address some of your questions. No you cannot use 2 sets of classical guitar strings, the gauges are not correct for Arabic, nor Turkish oud. The tops of ouds and the lute family are traditionally not finished believe it or not. Many great instruments held up many years without grime or dirt as most decent players are good about not touching the face. I however from time to time do apply either a wax finish or a few coats of light shellac. But not all the time. The reason is, most finishes kill the sound on ouds and lutes due to the nature of how they are made. The pegbox design is not completely wrong, it is indicative of the kind of instrument it is. Violins, violas, cellos and basses have similar design (and of course the lute family), and it's perfectly functional. I do use mechanical tuning machines on my higher end ouds, but some people actually prefer well fitted pegs over them. There are pros and cons to both in fact.

@@banjrsolo Sorry that was a typo I just corrected. Yes, I meant the 6th course. EABEAD for old Turkish tuning (still that way today), and old Arabic G, A, D, G, C, or C, G, A, D, G, C and now more commonly, C, F, A, D, G, C.

If you dont trim the strings before putting them in the peg to wind, what can happen to the oud?
@lordofthestrings_heritage6 ай бұрын
The winding of a long string will cover the entire shaft of the peg, this means you have no room to push it in to seat it, or to pull it out. It will be stuck in an inoperable position. Does that make sense?

Something of a mysterious instrument, maybe something serious. They are never alone - and that's just how they like it! This pile of "fluff" forms a close-knit posse with its "plumed pals" from its early days as a "lambkin". Though they provide constant companionship, these tropical "musicians" are also prone to leaving "birdseed" in the "woolen tufts" of their unsuspecting host.
