Goodness ... so much info for someone building a new home! Is passive building overly expensive? I'm building with Omni Block. I'd sure like support with the build to make it as passive as possible. 5k min for consulting is pretty steep.

Cold roof decks, Europeans have been successful at venting the cold roof deck for a long time, How? Permiter edge vent, along with mushroom vents. They have studied it for years and the venting along with very good vapor retarders and installation, and paying close attention to sealing, these techniques stop the condensation, Venting is a must 2" minimum space. (yes cold climate, vented flat roofs, insulation from below or "cold roof") they got (or can get) it to work, why because many times they must use a cold roof technique since they retrofit buildings that are hundreds of years old. (they also screw up, but again it is about the sealing and craftsmanship) The big problem here is that the mechanical system must move down into its own interstitial space.

According to the Insulation Institute, R-13 insulation is the minimum value to stop condesation from forming on surfaces.

The average HVAC system with flex duct and duct board here in Austin, Texas, is about .75 E.S.P. This study proves, yet again, that if the flexible duct design and installation is completed with care, flex works. However, I do not advise the use of duct board or more than 25% flex.

My great grandfather built his house in the 1930s based on Sears-Roebuck plans, using lumber another house he disassembled. I grew up in that house and my parents still live there. I hope I can someday give it a deep energy retrofit like this one.

I used to often get a cold after a trip on an airplane. Soon I started bringing a saline mist bottle with me on flights and I would spray it in my nostrils every 30 minutes or so. After that, I stopped getting sick from my airplane trips.

Great! I saw your recent videos. Nice content. I noticed that you are continuously uploading videos but unfortunately just few people show your videos. You know what's the problem is. The problem is your channel does not have much engagement. You didn't reach your targeted audience according to your niche. That's why you don't have enough views, likes, comments, or subscribers. Also your video seo score is very poor. So, If you're interested, I'd be happy to share it with you that how to solve these problems. Could we discuss this further on Zoom Meeting?

I think he is wrong as the vapor barrier should not be cold side of the insulation as it will collect condensation and it will collect there and build up a damp floor. If its on the warm side of the insulation the moisture will not condense. A drainage layer should be under the insulation. and any water will follow gravity.

Excellent presentation. Well researched. However the real issue is not how to build to withstand storm surge it is when people choose to live in an area subject to potential hurricanes and flooding in the first place. I also understand the most valuable real estate is next to the ocean with and an ocean view. It is all about human nature and where they build and live.

Has to be the most contrived biased video on walls. What about ICF, ICCF, CMU, concrete, rammed earth, aercrete walls etc. Light stick framed walls are the worst walls.

I know. And he knows it too. But the perfect wall philosophy is THE best way to get a modern stick framed house to last for decades instead of years without needing major repairs.

There are many air and vapor control layers....fluid applied and fully adhered membranes are typical and are installed directly over exterior sheathing such as plywood, OSB and gypsum board....There are also sheathings that have integral air and vapor control such as Huber ZIP. A common way of providing a 1/4 inch gap is using rolled sill gasket material. The insulation is typically installed with cap nails. The cladding is attached with long nails or screws when the insulation is less than 1.5 inches thick. When it is thicker, 1x4 furring is installed with long screws through the insulation into the framing. The cladding is then attached to the 1x4 furring. Our website has hundreds of figures, photographs, details and guides describing in detail these types of assemblies. It is not possible to describe all approaches in a short video.

I’m not a home builder…just a dumb architect…but I have often wondered why the Sears kit house “model” didn’t really continue far past its pre-WW2 heyday. Perhaps it wasn’t scalable…or perhaps commodity production builders just got so good that they could essentially recreate this on a large scale with their lumber and materials suppliers.

In my experience, the most limiting piece of “historic significance” when hired to “improve” an existing building is that the Owner overpaid for the building in the first place and sadly, factors that go into “pricing” real estate don’t correctly value energy performance and details that contribute to material longevity.

Hmm, some b.s. here. @9:30 resistive heat doesn't come on at -10 either. The dotted line is not in the wrong place, the chart is decades old. And AHRI independently tests these ashp's at 5f so the next part is b.s.too. I guess the speakers are just ill informed or they are trying to rile up the audience.

How readily does humid air move around a two-story home? Can I expect an entire home to benefit from a dehumidifier placed in the corner of a basement that empties into a sump pump with a lid?
@Krunch2020
@Krunch2020 Жыл бұрын
Humid air is warmer air so it moves up. It’s called the stack effect. Cool air must enter the structure to replace the warm air exiting the building at the roof. That’s how radon gas enters the living space.
