Great review. I’ve been on the H 45s front and rear for 2700 miles. Only one puncture while using my gravel as a xc rig. Love them. One thing, for me a slight uptick in weight (which I’ll lose in body weight during a ride) isn’t a concern. The durometer matters more. For a nearly bald tire, the H hold a line and I trust them completely. Also riding in SoCal. Cheers!

I run a set of these on my custom gravel bike that I just got earlier this week, been doing great so far on the road and the wet dirt and mud that I've been able to ride on so far. We're just getting a slightly warmer period (about 0-5C) after freezing and snow the past week so no dry conditions at all. Has been very confidence inspiring aside from sections where you'd need a car tyre to not start slipping about, even my old hardtail would've been struggling in some of the sections I've taken the bike through so far I wasn't even aware of this but they're supposed to be fully puncture protected even on the side walls, that's why they're so heavy. Big upside so far is they've been holding air tight, haven't even checked my tyre pressure since I've picked up the bike, my Revolt X needed to reinflate at least every other ride or twice a week because it was passively losing air that much
@oldguyandabike23 сағат бұрын
Are they? I did not know that, but I wonder why an X version exists if these are that burly? I do run other tires that are belted a bit but weigh less. However, weight is not as important as liking and trusting the tire when you use it. gg

My Conti Race King Protection in 650B 2.2" is 580g and 582g. They are lighter than what I had expected for a 2.2". But granted they are 650B so a 700C 2.2" would be slightly heavier. I looked at BRR and noticed that the typical gravel tire's casing would be around 2.6mm thick while the Race King is only 1.7mm. MTB tires don't need a thick casing due to them being run at lower pressures and lower pressures are a great flat protection. My other gravel tires that I use on packed dirt is the Conti Terra Speed in a 650B 40mm and they weigh 460g. The older generation of the Terra Speeds were super light, and I had one that was 404g. out of the box. But the older generation had a tendency to weep sealant and I think Conti eventually increased the casing thickness to increase robustness, and slapped on an E-25 designation. The older Terra Speed in a 700C 40mm weighed just 421g on my scale.

I have a set of 2.2 RKs in a box waiting for a bike that can fit them. Maybe this year. But weight does not tell the whole tale. A 2.2 compared to a 45mm tire will change a lot of things on a gravel bike, and the compromises need to be considered. But I remember running them on fast 29ers and they were just a stunner tire for speed. Hardly a trailbike tire, but back then we were all XC geeks anyway. gg

I'm 61, only ride mtb, and this is year 5 with an Absolute Black Oval. I use mtb on the same trails that I run on, as cross-training for trail running, and running in the Grand Canyon a couple times a year. It's completely changed my level of trail running fitness, and at the Grand Canyon, I've gone from "just surviving it" to running it as a speed run (I don't walk the ups, or use poles, I actually just run the whole thing). I built a 47lb downhill bike into my training rig, because I wanted something really heavy in order to get maximum beat-down on the long climbs. I rode it for a couple weeks with the round ring (I'd converted it to 1x ), so I knew how that felt, and then put the Absolute Black Oval on it. Night and day difference, and as you say, it's worth a gear in the back. I actually put old school climbing bars with the slight hook on the end, on the bars, and they're worth about half a gear. They allow me to really get up into the front of the bike, sort of in a road position, and put the power to the pedals. My knees are absolutely destroyed from a lifetime of having bowed legs (which wrecks the medial compartments of the knees) and I had both lower legs straightened in 2023. Knee pain is 99% gone at all times, I'm back to downhill skiing, still doing the big trail runs and the training for them, and absolutely flogging the brick of a training bike. The oval is a big part of the training equation. I actually have 2 much lighter mtbs (with AB ovals), one of which is carbon, but I'm always on the brick because it's just so much fun, and the rides are chaos! I'd be interesting if you put an AB Oval on one of your other bikes, and compared that to what you already use. They come in offsets, so you should be able to get your chainline happy.

New bike Ti Turner Gila, which is awesome. For me I can run a bigger chainring in oval form v’s round (2 tooth) it’s like gaining extra speed with no extra training. 💯 % correct on the differences in ovalation by different manufacturers. I got oval rings on all my bikes .. even my cargo bike 😁 10 years ago, I got the first oval ring on my mountainbike .. and never looked back. On step gnarly single track it gives better traction og easier pedal rotation over the top of the stroke. You can simply climb stuff better. Same with gravel, and the added benefit of not suffering so hard when climbing on endless fire roads .. in head wind. When I build my road bike 6 years ago I made it 1-by with an oval ring. The only downside is that you might have to change the ring or cassette sometimes depending on the terrain you ride. I'll never go back to round rings or have a front shifter again 😁

Good to mention the brain capacity issue for safe hearing. That said, I find the Shokz do a great job of delivering clear sound (I’m less picky about tone since I’m usually listening to podcasts) without preventing good acoustical situational awareness when used at moderate volume. If one TRIES to hear them over high speed wind noise (descents), they start to prevent good perception and that’s a bad idea. I’m a firm believer in knowing where the pause button is in those times. FWIW, here in California, as far as I read the law, these are legal to use on the road because they are neither in nor covering your ears. But I would not be surprised to have an officer not accept that argument. So ride at one’s own legal jeopardy 😏.
