Nose mounted MGs of smaller calibre will induce little or no shake/vibration and sway. Bigger guns can do so, however. Wing mounted guns, due to being farther from the longitudinal axis, are more likely to induce shake and sway. As to sway, you should try the early P-47s which do not have the dorsal fin extension for the vertical stabiluzer. The plane swings in yaw to a horrible degree, which I strongly feel is unrealistic. And so I've modded the relevant P-47 plane class to reduce this. Furthermore, I've also modded the base gun class which induces gunfire shake innall planes, providing a setting for the player to adjust this via a conf.ini entry he would place in the [Mods] section.

Before you mentioned the Sun shining through the upper panel I was going to point this out. Most of the 109s suffer from this, where the canooy framing and part of the instrument panel has the Sun being seen through them. This is because the textures used for those elements have an alpha channel. Such textures should NOT have an alpha channel. The alpha channel is usually used to cut out parts which have a more complex shape, or where it's desired to not have a large number of vertices and hence polygons. The numerous circular gauges are a very common example of textures having alpha channels which cut out the circles from a simply 4-vertex square. If I flew the 109s more I would have made a mod to address this.

If you turn on "No Instant Success" you have to complete the main objective to progress the career. If you have it switched off as you do you can continue the campaign even if the goals are not met.

I find that for the stock flak effect the flash component lasts far too long. The small fireball lasts nearly a half second, during which it is seen to rise vertically as though convectively. In reality, such a small explosive charge will have its burst flash last for 0.1 second at most.

I don't think it's necessary that bombers recognize your presence before continuing on their mission. The turbine overspeed warning could be related to the supercharger setting being not appropriate to the altitude. Are you using manual or automatic engine controls?

The little instrument you referred to is called the slip indicator, or slip ball in this form of a ball in a fluid-filled, curved tube. It's very handy on the sight because it lies so near to your line of sight. Gunfire from a distance while in a condition if slip puts rounds offset laterally from the intended aim point. Being able to neutralize slip without having to look down to a gauge removed some distance from the sight is valuable. By the way, this gun sight here is the Mk. VIII, and should have the same reticle as found in USN fighters using this same sight. Atvleast, I'm not aware of a different reticle having been installed for the USAAF. The 'telephone' is an audio warning provided by the simple radar which indicates a plane lying near to your own plane's longitudinal axis.

I get the impression that the planes are rendered at an exagerrated size, likely 2X, presumably for better visibility. Bitvthis is nowhere near as bad as for Microsoft Flight Simulator, released in 2000, where the planes and objects were drawn at easily 4X larger, and possibly 8X, when viewed from the cockpit. (But from an external viewpoint they looked to be drawn at normal size!) The tracers are quite thick. I suppose this was to ensure good visibility at a distance.

I did not know of this game in particular. From the looks of it, the closest game I have played to this (regarding very basic flight model and nice hanger visuals) is probably Crimson Skies (before I got into IL-2 anyway). Looking on eBay, I am finding CD-ROM copies for between £10 & £20. Otherwise I see what is maybe a download for it from ModDB (I can't recall if you mentioned where you found your current install).

Great video, great mission. Love that game! But a friendly advice, "Sprengladung" doesn't mean "spring loaded", in that sentence it means [ by means of ] explosives. Sprengladung is "engineer German" for... well... bomb. ^^ Thought I should mention it, just in case :D Sprengen means to blow some thing up, Sprengstoff is the stuff you use to blow stuff up (like TNT) and Sprengladung means that you packed something full of Sprengstoff for a purpose. Like a bomb or a boobie trap or an ejection system for the canopy. spring load would be "Federlast" (literally and figuratively). Just to mess with yall, those jack in the box spring loaded clowns are called "Springteufel" but springen means Jump, nothing to do with spring (feder). It means Jumping devil. So if a box says Spring, ... it's a toy, if it says Spreng ... it's a mine. ^^

When the enemy is about, never fail to look around less frequently than every 10 seconds, or don't fly on the same course for longer than 10 seconds. When defensive, apply roll at times so as to re-orient your lift vector. Maintaining a constant elevator turn, so that your path describes a single plane in space, makes you pitentially a sitting duck because the AI's deflection solution remains largely constant. Especially when he has one or both of the maneuverability and sufficient separation to permit his pulling the required lead. At high altitude your ground speed as much faster than the indicated airspeed. This means that the deflection you must apply even in a gentle turn and when the target presents a small angle-off aspect is surprisingly large. You really should try the gyro mode of your gun sight. When enabled, you use a key to expand or shrink the diamond caret pattern to match the target's wingspan (after selecting the plane type). Then maneuver to put the reticle on the target. You will likely be surprised by the large deflection the gyro mechanism provides!

@@Iceman42nd Your P-51 here has a gyro sight, for which three different modes can be selected: fixed reticle (as you've been using), gyro mode only, and a combination of fixed and gyro. The latter is best when learning to use the sight. There are key assignments for changing the mode, selecting the target base wingspan (by plane type, as you cycle through the list), and for expanding/shrinking the gyro reticle pattern (a series of diamond-shaped dots arranged in a circle.) These assignments should be found under the sight section in the controls menu. Note that the gyro sights (the US, UK and DE) and bombsights share certain controls. I'm writing this during a break at work, and so couldn't reliably name the controls right now. Experiment! 😉

Contrails are generated when the plane altitude is 7,000m ASL and higher. For ALL maps. It occurs to me that it would be easy to institute different height thresholds based on any number of chosen criteria. Such as actual air temperature at the plane's altitude, the SEASON text string in the map's load.ini file, or the map's DECLIN (latitude) value in the map's load.ini, or the map's CAMOUFLAGE text string. I already have made three different wingtip vortex effects, which are chosen based on the altitude and the map's DECLIN and CAMOUFLAGE values. The cloud you go into and out of is the high cirrus layer which lies at 7,000m ASL, and the in-cloud 'fog' effect occurs within a height range around this. Even if the high cloud texture shows no such cloud, but instead a clear sky, the usual in-cloud 'fog' effect is generated. Just as for the lower cumulus clouds which this campaign has turned off in the difficulty ootions (but still draws their shadows on the surface.)

The older contrails were made by the FAR simpler method of joining together line segment textures which had a length of many tens or even hundreds of meters. This new contrail effect is using MANY more individual round particle textures, which requires at least 100 times more individual textures to draw for a given length of the trail. This is why the contrails are also shirter; to keep the particle numbers reasonable. When the view shows too many of these particles, such as when the full length of numerous trails are shown, the graphics engine drops the drawing of some of the trails. The same thing happens when many smoke columns from damage has occurred to numerous planes, buildings, ships, etc.

On the last GBU drop, OVRD button on the TGP display was highlighted, which if I'm not mistaken, means you had overridden laser guidance. I did some GBU drops myself in Instant Action last week and sometimes, the laser either wouldn't paint, or would paint too early, then stop. I don't know if it's a bug, or due to the erratic way I was intentionally flying (testing was the goal after all) but that's what happened. A positive side-effect is that now I deeply appreciate the option to manually lase (first trigger detent) after the weapon has dropped off the rail. How do you know if the laser is firing: watch closely on the L symbol on the TGP display. If it flashes, it's firing. If not, it's idle. When left to auto-lase, it normally starts after a while and the only way to verify is to keep your eyes on the TGP, instead on the beauty cam :p Also, the manual mentions a 30-80 degrees bank after you drop, in order to keep the laser unobstructed and on target. Didn't know about it myself either, read it a couple of days ago.

That looong chase to the SW is almost certainly the result of this. When the AI determines that you are in pursuit, it can go into a defensive posture and maintain a considerably long attempt to obtain and keep distance. If your target is at a good distance and wish to get to grips before traversing half the map, turn away and keep an eye out for his commencement of a turn to attack you. Then you can turn into him again, as he will likely be committed to his own attack. As to a viewer's comment about difficulty in maintaining good control of hot machines like the P-51... The key is to adjust the in-game joystick sensitivity profile for the elevator. A curve which starts about 4% response for the 10% deflection position, and smoothly rising therefrom, should jeep one from going into accelerated stalls when pulling on the stick at high speed.

About your comment regarding the canopy framing hiding your prey from view for a time. When you take full advantage of 6dof translational movement this should not be a problem. For the planes I fly I never have such a problem because I can shift about in my virtual seat and easily get the framing out of the way. If needed, I expand the limits of motion on one or more axes in the cockpit Java class--as long as this does not result in unrealistic virtual head positioning. 😉 Your first kill was nice due to maintaining a steady aim, resulting in a good number of hits in a short time.

I had a bridge mission yesterday in balkans campaign , i gave my wingman 4 mavs , and i myself took two mk 84s and two CBUs , my wingman engaged his bridge from a safe distance while i used ccrp toss bombing to toss them , the cbus caused greater damage , one of the mk 84 missed but the other scored a hit

@@Iceman42nd right, like the cbu 97’s 108’s aren’t really modeled. There is some lines that determine what it is most effective against. Armor, wheeled, personnel, trains (yeah trains is in there… looks like microprose had plans for trains and dropped it). So I imagine the clusters just have higher effectiveness numbers on the lines of it’s preferred targets. I found this out dropping a gbu12 or something like it on a boat and it never took damage because it was “ships=0”. Had to go find that and allow it to damage ships. AF may be set differently though. This was in BMS.

@@Iceman42nd I did low altitude fast drop and it worked too. First was from 15,000 and I circled around and barely got it locked before I released from maybe 3,000 at 450kts . I thought “if one will miss, this will be it… but still was a good shot. Something else besides the perfect drop conditions.. idk what tho.

The cockpit shake has to be related to the "dynamic head positioning" setting in the RV Config Editor. Other than that, what's infuriatingly interesting is that, Tiger Spirit for example, will play differently in stock-ish 4.0 (meaning RP 5.0) Superpak, FF3x, FF5x, AF, BMS... seems like an entire lifetime won't be enough to fully explore (and appreciate) what's been done for this game/sim/hobby/obsession/madness/whatever :p Fun fact about FF5x-6: what you see on the screen, runs on DirectX 7 ;)

Since it's not from there, honestly, I don't know if it can be turned off. Seems it's coded in as a visual feedback, to produce (along with the relevant sound cue) a let's say, "Sturmovik-y effect". Not an ideal solution for the 2D cockpit (works pretty well in the 3D cockpit) but better than nothing I guess :)

First of all, do you use joystick or a keyboard? Speed management is the most important thing here. Never pull too much on the stick, you have to be really gentle. And joystick, where you can control the angle of your control surfaces. On keyboard it is either 0 or 1. Nothing in between.

I forget if your rudder control is via pedals or a twist stick. I suspect the latter given the not uncommon tendency for your yaw to depart and oscillate at the moment of firing. This leads to wasted shots, and a really poor hit percentage. 😉 If your directional control is sloppy, firing when closer and in more controlled, shorter bursts is advisable. Long busts as your plane is swaying and porpoising about, and particularly when the target is on the far side, starts to resemble the 'spray and pray' gunnery of the novice. 😂

I control the rudder by twisting the stick. I always prefer closer range and shorter bursts, but no when japanese aircrafts fly that well and pilot will automatically see and react no matter what direction you approach them. There is no a moment of surprise for them, the AI reacts all the time. No blind spot behind their cabin or below the aircraft.

@@Iceman42nd A while back I skimmed through the code in Maneuver.class. There is consideration of blind spots in a general, 'one size fits all' manner. And consideration of AI tracking ability based on how long an enemy is out of sight (in his own blind spot or blocked by terrain or clouds.) And AI skill plays a role. In good conditions AI typically spots bogies out to 6km. You would have to approach from farther than this already within the blind spot and stay there in order to have a chance at catching him unawares. It might be the case that AI detection of enemies is biased to the better in order that the player not get bored shooting down squadrons of turkeys. ;) It sure is a delicate balancing act constructing AI behavior so that it be neither brutal nor a cakewalk. The complexity of the decision tree means that even a small change here could result in a bad impact elsewhere Perhaps the skill level could be made a more significant factor as regards plane detection by our little silicon lifeforms...

@@glennledrew8347 I think that the viewrange of 6 miles is ok, in case you are within their field of view. But if you are approaching them from behind and ideally from bottom, there should be no chance for them to spot you and react. I happened to me many times, that I was approaching them from their blind spot they were flying unaware pretty straight, but as soon as I was 0,9 -0,8 km behind them, suddenly they started to maneuver. Although I was still in their blind spot.

Paveway fix is spacing set to zero in sms. Default is set at 175. So it is 175 from zero.

@@Iceman42nd ahhh! My post kept on getting deleted I thought. I made a vid and put address and it disappeared so I wound up deleting vid… yes it works and that’s it. I hit bridge every time. I guess links sometimes disappear a post.. idk. Lol I tried to let you know from 3 different yt accounts.
