Amy, your spirit never left us, it just imbued itself with Raye and Raye has taken you to the next level. Raye is what you get when you have Amy's voice, songwriting and musical talent, but you've worked your shit out, are not afraid of the stage any more, and because of that have no need to alter your mind anymore to perform. It's not fair to put the weight of Winehouse onto Raye and not give her her props as her own artist, but the comparison is indeniable. Noone will replace Amy, Raye isn't trying to, but she's got that same 'IT' as Amy had, but with a more robust, stronger and settled mindframe. I feel like Raye went through similar pains, but she managed to break through them in a way Amy never got a chance to. This woman will go incredibly far because you can't keep such talent down. She bursts with life, her soul spills, she jazzes with fine flourish, she knows and rides that bassline and those beats, she understands music, give and take, thrust and pull hard and soft...her songs are purposely not formulaic, doing things in the last thirds of the tracks you don't expect rather than merely amping up the chorus a bit...speaking of chorus, she writes killer hooks, the Escapism chorus is one of the best flows of all time. She is warts and all and unafraid of vulnerability, knowing it is strength. She knows how to turn her pain into art, her joy too. She's strikingly beautiful, a mixture of ethnicities that somehow makes everyone feel a kinship such is the ambiguity, but deep down she BLACK! And she also dances incredibly, which if you haven't yet seen because you only know her big performances like these with the dresses, then you're in for a treat. I was sceptical qhen i read about some girl called raye who won 6 or 7 brits in one night and thought oh god which poor little pop star have they decided to overhype and build up so they can knock her down later...didn't bother to follow it cus it seemed gimmicky and forced. Then i came across this and qellz i've written out the rest above. Went on a nosedive straight into her work and have been sitting with her shit on repeat ever since. We do not get many true musicians, the industry likes to confect products for us based on flavours of the month, and its all good but we don't get FED. Now and again someone comes along and feeds the children! It is no coincidence that she is independent, because only a true artist could hit us with unadulterated, untouched by bigwigs sonic energy like this woman. And i don't just mean this performance, i mean her body of work, but especially her album. And her performances, at the royal albert hall and elsewhere. So yes, Amy is gone, and we were left musically bereft for a long time, but Raye is filling that void. I hope she comes to this thread and reads the love and support she has. And if any man touches her without consent ever again, she has an army to fall back on who will roll up and enact suitable vengeance. Now we just wait to see what she does next. My advice to her would be to take a year or two to enjoy success and life, not overwork, not rush out more stuff thinking this is her 'moment' and she had to take it while it lasts. No. Enjoy your life, go sloe, you have worked your arse off. We will patiently await whatever you do next. People keep talking about the injustice that with Raye around, why is Taylor Swift seen as the biggest star of the moment. We know why(te). But it would be a curse on raye to have that kind of fame. You only need that level of stardom when there isnt much artistry to sustain the career. Let Swift have her billions and her teenage crowd and her dead choons and thin voice and stiff waist.
