YOU totally ignored the CONTRAST Button next to dimmer in the function menu. Turn the contrast all the way up and then compare. This is a biased comparison. Come on man… You not showing the contrast level on the 710, makes this biased. 2:52, looks like contrast is set to 10. No wonder it looks dimmer, lol😂

The next time I get my hands on my club's 710, I'll see what difference the contrast settings make. But I disagree with your insinuation that it's a "biased" review. Nobody is paying me to do this and I have no agenda. While I like my Icoms, I've said repeatedly in my videos, in the comments, and in all the emails I receive about it, that the 710 is a great radio.

I don't have a lot of experience with 6m, but I'm told it's usually better in the summer than the winter, so giving it a try during the June VHF Contest could be a great time. @MikeN2MAK20 сағат бұрын
I really like the Icom 705. I like that it is all-band and all-mode. It's easy to travel with, which is something I do a fair amount of for work. Plus it's really easy to use and connect for digital modes. I do wish it had an internal tuner and a little more power, like 20W. But I don't think I'll ever find the perfect radio or antenna. Ham radio is full of compromises.

Thanks for sharing this video. This is a new antenna for me as well, and looks like it would be fun to build a couple of these for different band combinations (thinking POTA in particular). I'm curious if you tried orienting it vertical as well as horizontal. I have an (unproven) theory that a lot of hams use their existing vertically mounted antennas when they want to play FT4/FT8 on 2m / 6m.
@MikeN2MAK11 күн бұрын
I haven't tried it vertical. The VHF group here are pretty much all running horizontal for nets and contests. Even when I'm doing FM in VHF contests, sometimes I'll have to use a horizontal antenna since the losses from cross-polarization can be substantial. Although I have used a vertical 1/4-wave for 6m FT8 and SSB before when there were openings. I'm assuming that's fine, since the polarization will change to elliptical from skywave propagation.

@robertmeyer474413 күн бұрын
Great antenna. I wish I had some 450 ohm window line . I did make a center fed fanes dipole for 10 and 6 meters . Worked ok for FT8 . Match was like 1.5 and 1.6 on FT8 for 6/10 meter bands. I did make end fed 1/2 wave vertical for just 6m . worked super . just a small 1/4 wave counterpoise on ground. 49/1 UNUN on type 61 core . It does 10 meters by switching antenna wire and longer counterpoise. as well as outher bands. I may make that in 10/6 meters to try FT8 . 10 is super open in NY now. The best of my wire antennas' so far is 5/8 wave on 10 meter vertical and adjust end tune I get 10/11/12 meters . I have cut wires for 15/17/20 meters 5/8 wave and all work. with 4:1 UNUN no ATU needed. The 20 meter did tune 1.7 SWR but did not try to lower. I pushed TUNE on my IC 7300 done . Killer FT8 contacts and it was CCA speaker wire . I used up good wire I had on 10 and 6 meter antennas. I learned the 4:1 UNUN has less loss than a 49:1 one. One of many reasons that Coffee And Ham radio Poseidon 25Ft vertical works so well. That green UNUN . If you shorten it a tad. you will tune 10-11-12 meters with no tuner. I have to try 6 meters 5/8 wave . Mostly late spring into summer it open up. I have the 1/2 wave one cut already.Made great FT8 on 6 meters in mid june from Boston NY . I saw Ziggy's video stream. It gave me some ideas and I want to try . Will wait to spring in NY . 73
@MikeN2MAK12 күн бұрын
I'm glad Ziggy's stream gave you some ideas! That's the fun part about contests and challenges--they can encourage you to try new things. I haven't made a 5/8-wave yet, but a Rybakov/Poseidon with 25' of wire is pretty close to it for 12m. The CaHR boys did a great job with that antenna.
@robertmeyer474412 күн бұрын
@@MikeN2MAK The CaHR guys go a great job ! So does salty Walt. I built that Rybakov . O loved how well it worked. With a nano VNA-H4 doing SWR sweep and smith chart , I saw a resonate point below 12 meter band. So I just started to shorten it and got SWR under 1.5 on 10/11/12 meters . I tried without a tuner and it worked super good on 1 band .Things you learn buy just trying . 73

This type of antenna is new to me. The 6m band doesn't get much love in the Amateur Radio world for some reason. Not many radios include the 6m band for transmitting. The 6m band is 4MHz wide (at least on the Canada radio band plan). We have a few 6m repeaters in Southern Ontario. If I was going to make this type of antenna I would do a standard 2m/70cm antenna. That is rather common. I would tune mine for 146Mhz (middle of the band for voice).
@MikeN2MAK13 күн бұрын

VHF & UHF can be a lot of fun! When I was doing the September VHF Contest, I was getting 100+ miles with a 50W mobile and a roll-up j-pole. I'm in Rochester, NY, which is right near Lake Ontario and not far from Lake Erie. Being near the Great Lakes (or large bodies of water) we sometimes get the benefits of tropospheric ducting, which definitely seemed to be the case then. When conditions were right for tropo, I've stood by the lake and hit repeaters 80+ miles away with just a 5W HT. Here's a link to the video from the VHF contest kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYi9iomAgdSYjLs and one for a Short on tropo ducting kzbin.infor-Xaw_tmNys?feature=share in case you're interested.

@@dirigoelectric Congrats on the Tech and good luck on the General! It's helpful to start studying for the next exam while the materials is still fresh in your head. I'm lucky that there is an active VHF group in Western New York, so that helps. If you're planning to activate on 2m, trying to get some elevation can be helpful. But it's really helpful if you let members in your local club know in advance. My experience is that people generally like to hear activity on 2m simplex and it's a good way for others to be able to test/try their setups.

That’s the $1,000 question, LOL. I’ve used it for some POTA activations on SSB and FT8 for maybe an hour or so without any issue. A separate tuner would be better for a more permanent solution, but having the option to use Emergency Mode on the 7300 is nice, especially for portable ops.

@@MikeN2MAKHow do you like the Explorer 20? I can’t decide between it and the 30ft version. I know Hight is might but the decision boils down to packability vs a separate thing to carry. I believe the 20 will fit in my Apache 3800 case.
@MikeN2MAKАй бұрын
@@stevesummersell_K4WXX I do like the POTA20. It's small and lightweight, but more sturdy than the Carbon 6. It's a good mast for POTA and great for SOTA or traveling. For me, I'm only worried about size and weight for SOTA or traveling. I do like being able to do vertical antennas, so for longer/taller masts I prefer fiberglass. The carbon fiber can interact with vertical antennas near or touching it, like a Rybakov, 1/4-wave, or roll-up j-pole. I do have an Apache 4800 can and just checked--the POTA20 will fit in there, but if the 3800 is smaller in width, I don't know that it will unless it's at an angle. Ultimately, it all comes down to how you'll be using it. I hope this helps!
