What cords do you use to connect the 710 to your computer?
@MikeN2MAK2 ай бұрын
The Yaesu 710 has a USB-B port on the back, which is common on HF radios (e.g. ICOM 7300), and also printers. I just use a USB-B to USB-A cable. I have a Tripp Lite cable that works well (I use it with my 7300) and it has built-in ferrite chokes at both ends. Here’s a link to it on Amazon. www.amazon.com/dp/B008VOPCGY/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_FHRJAR8S6G6G5N2X0HCR?linkCode=ml2&tag=n2mak0a-20

@@MikeN2MAK Thank you for posting a link to the cable. I have an Ic 7300 but just bought a 710. Do you know where I can find the usb codec? Thanks for such a great video!

@@kylefreemason I"m not sure. I didn't have any issues when I hooked the 710 up to the computer for digital. You might want to check the Yaesu website or manual.

Sorry, I realized I hadn't replied. I use a cable by Tripp Lite. It has ferrite chokes at both ends and I've never had any RFI issues with it. Here's a link amzn.to/3BIj0iA

Wow, that looked eazy peasy. Spent 5.5 hours and I still can't get past that lousy test button. I was hoping for some hints on WHY it ain't working.
@MikeN2MAK7 ай бұрын
Hmmm…I wish I knew. Do you have the right Comm Ports selected?

@@MikeN2MAK Well, got by the test button. But now I can't connect to anyone. It almost seems like my signal is not getting out. Crazy!! So, I can read all the station activity but can't connect to anybody.

Made my first 4 contacts tonight but I still don't think my audio that's going out is good enough. I'm reading tons of signals but only a few connect to me. And it doesn't automatically connect. I have to double click on the person contacting me. So, I'm gaining but I'm not there yet!! Something still ain't right.

@@RobertMacCready I wish I could be more help. It's hard not seeing what's going on and how things are setup. If you're making contacts, you're making progress though. I hope you're able to get it all sorted out.

@@MikeN2MAK Appreciate the thoughts. I think I will return the 710 and get an FTDX10. Have a friend that has that radio and his works very well. I think he'll help me through the audio parts. And I also get the feeling that the 710 has some audio defects. Maybe if it really is software defined radio, they can fix it with an upgrade. And why can't Yahoo put a software set that you click on and it sets up all the audio crap.

The "no ALC" thing is incorrect. Yaesu tech support says this: "With respect to ALC action, if you set the RF Power Out level to say 50 watts, and then increase the power level adjustment on the WSJTX control panel, the power out will increase until it reaches 50 watts, at which point you will see the ALC meter start to move up. Any increase in input level from the WSJTX application will result in an increase of ALC action, but the power out level will remain constant. Adjust the input audio level from WSJTX until the ALC meter is about mid-way on the ALC meter white scale. This should insure that any changes in audio level from the computer as the frequency changes within the 200Hz (lower limit of the WSJTX software) to 3050kHz, (the upper limit of the default TX bandpass filter), will have no effect on the output power of the radio."

They also say not to run FT8 at more than 50W for extended periods, just briefly on occasion to make a difficult DX contact, because FT8 is considered a full duty cycle mode. It transmits for 15 seconds at a time with only a 15 second cool down period which isn't long enough to let the finals cool properly and prevent possible damage.

I typically only do 10-20W for FT. I did 50W in this video, but I usually don't do more than that.
@jaym13018 ай бұрын
@@MikeN2MAK I have an FTDX10 and always run 50W on it. Between this and around 25% ALC (around a 3 on the S meter just above.) I've worked all continents. My TX signal is as clean as a whistle according to the 3DSS, oscilloscope and AF-FFT displays on the radio.

Interesting. Where is that from? I did a few searches but don't see it anywhere. I also have the manual and the FT8 instructions PDF from Yaesu and don't see anything about having the ALC up halfway. I would worry that an ALC setting like that would result in a distorted signal and splatter for FT8.

I think you are mistaking ALC for ssb and other phone modes with ALC for WSJT-x. in WSJT-X you don't want the ALC kicking in. it is your automatic level control and if it is kicking in, your signal is being adjusted up and down. for the signal to be read properly on the other end you want the raw signal going out.
