Excellent talk on the reality of Corporate Ag; large acreage, hIgh yields, real number losses, and optimizing practices for the search for farm profitability.

Thank you for the informative experiments. While this experiment for spring defoliation may prove a phenomenon in crop load management, the spur leaves are very important to the development of fruit in the first sixty days so return bloom and pack-out size will be impacted. 20% autumn defoliation was also ironically proven to not affect fruit size and return bloom in a journal article by WSU on pneumatic defoliation for increased fruit pigmentation via exposure to sunlight. However, it sounds great to try 50% to decrease carbohydrate and increase stress.

What agenda you trying to push APAL with all this climate change reference 🤦♂️ keep your political nonsense out of APAL Disappointing

Hi @jamesfilsell7853, it looks like because Nigel talked about the warmer climate experience in South Africa it triggered an auto definition/explainer from KZbin in the blue box. Hope this clarifies its inclusion. APAL

Reflective film = unnecessary wasteful plastic that put phthalates in soil, ends up in landfill/ocean. Totally ridiculous solution to coloring apples.

Please don't bother with niche cultivars like Rosy Glow(tm). They'll be forgotten in a few year's time. Be innovative, start breeding or doing rootstock compatibility research on actually promising apples. Do research that actually matters, not on an apple with only a three digit acreage. By the way, WSU has already figured out that pneumatic leaf removal is most cost efficient, universal for all apples. Thanks.

It is not a niche in Australia; there are different regions across the world
@woollymammoth125 ай бұрын
Following on from @jake-au’s comment, Rosy Glow is a commonly grown Pink Lady apple here in Australia and Europe. I assume you are coming from an American point of view - please keep in mind that orchard conditions are very different here (especially light conditions) and also the cost of labour, machinery and materials. What works in one region does not mean it can be applied universally.

What are you talking about ! Rosy Glow is one of the most commonly grown apple in Australia and the best to grow
@CumminsHerb5 ай бұрын
@@jake-au If worldwide production is less than five million boxes per year, then it's "niche"! It's purely a pink sport of cv Cripps Pink. Introduced in the late 2000s, I've seen many other cultivars with less years on the market do better.

Monoculture farming causes many pest & disease issues. Usually these farmers want a chemical solution. The real solution is better design to incorporate an integrated pest management system, involving more native trees and bushland.

I guess Nijiseiki Asian Pear. This is being planted in Punjab and Haryana states of India. Patti town in Punjab state is home to 2500 hector of sweet Asian Pear known as Naspati. Hard skin pear which can survive long time approx 30 days at normal room temperature around 30degree. Famous around India by the name PattiPear.

I developed the concept of dynamic or adaptive controlled atmosphere fruit storage at the Dept of Agriculture, Knoxfield, Victoria in the early 1980s as a young agricultural engineer. I was doing a master's degree in agricultural and electrical engineering at the Uni of Melbourne and was funded by the then Apple board. The initial task was computer control of CA equipment with static levels, but I needed to be able to test it quickly, so I developed a simulation of the CA storage system. I used the cumulative respiration rate of the fruit, the respirator quotient, as an indicator of fruit quality; the lower the better. However, it occurred to me that the control system could adaptively control storage conditions to minimise the respiration rate, a minimum-seeking algorithm, one of those rare eureka moments. I published the concept as a conference paper in Acta Horticulturae in 1985 under my full name, Andrew S Wollin, with a couple of colleagues. I moved to lead the Queensland Dept of Primary Industries engineering group shortly after. I pursued the idea with some engineering researchers from the Uni of Southern Queensland. They published a couple of papers on the idea, but the project ended abruptly. I lost track of the idea but saw an article by ABC News a few years ago mentioning dynamic controlled atmosphere storage. It seems others had picked up the concept and developed it into a commercial system. I checked through the literature and found that I was cited as the originator of the concept. At the time, I discussed the idea of minimising the respiratory quotient with a postharvest horticultural science colleague but he thought it would be more complicated than that. It is interesting to see a whole new chapter on the physiology of stored fruit under adaptive storage in postharvest research books and textbooks. As well as starting a new storage system, the idea has spawned a whole new research area within postharvest horticulture.

So how does this smartfresh help the people you want too consume this chemical. Have anyone who works for this company consumed this? I think this has already being done in the food now, and now you want too talk or market it. In nature fruits and vegetables go through a process on its own and no help was needed and the people never had a problem with storing or eating the foods before they have no nutrition so they depose of it. Who asked for this any way, where did this company research and asked if this is what the people want?
