I was 9 year old when this happenes. I remember my dad exclaimed 'own goal! That guy will be dead' and few days after that it truly happened. My 9 y.o mind (who wasnt even interested in the slightest in sport) keep that in long term memory because of how absurd it was. I didn't know there were people gambled over matches

For those who don't know: On 2 July 1994, Escobar was murdered in the aftermath of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, reportedly as retaliation for having scored an own goal which contributed to the team's elimination from the tournament. Escobar's own goal occurred in Colombia's second group match against hosts USA during the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Stretching to block a cross from American midfielder John Harkes, he inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net. The United States took a 1-0 lead and ended up winning 2-1. After the 1994 FIFA World Cup, Escobar decided to return to Colombia instead of visiting relatives in Las Vegas, Nevada. On the evening of 1 July 1994, five days after the elimination of Colombia from the World Cup, Escobar called his friends, and they went to a bar in the El Poblado neighbourhood in Medellín. Then they went to a liquor store. Shortly afterwards, they arrived at the El Indio nightclub. His friends split up. At approximately 3:00 the next morning, Escobar was alone in the parking lot of El Indio, in his car, when three men appeared. They began arguing with him. Two of the men took out handguns. It was reported that the killer shouted "¡Gol!" ("Goal!") after every shot, once for each time a football commentator had said it during the broadcast. The group then drove away in a Toyota pick-up truck, leaving Escobar to bleed to death. Escobar was taken to the hospital where he died 45 minutes later. And here's the murderer of Andres Escobar: Humberto Castro Muñoz, a drug cartel bodyguard in Colombia, was arrested on the night of 2 July 1994, confessing the next day to the killing of Escobar. Castro also worked as a driver for Santiago Gallón, who had allegedly lost heavily betting on the outcome of the game. He was found guilty of Escobar's murder in June 1995. He was sentenced to 43 years in prison. The sentence was later reduced to 26 years because of his submitting to the ruling penal code in 2001. Humberto was released on good behaviour due to further reductions from prison work and study in 2005. His three accomplices were acquitted.

Andres should have been smarter. He knew Colombian's love for futbol and knew where he was living (Medellin) at the height of the drug madness. He should have never went to any club. If I were him, I would have left the country.

It's so sad that people can make a single mistake and their life is ruined. My friend who worked for UPS in the early 2000's in Brooklyn, NYC was a good guy, coming home late from work one night. He was approached by a guy with a knife who tried to rob and stab him. He tussled with the guy and gave the robber one good punch that knocked him clean out. The robber fell and hit his head on the concrete. My friend called the police and waited for them to arrive. They put the thief in an ambulance and took the knife as evidence. He was in a coma and died 4 days later from the brain injury. The police arrested my friend and he was sentenced to 17 years in prison. He lost everything, even his fiance. All of this for just protecting himself to not be robbed or stabbed by a lifelong criminal drug addict. This is the world we live in. The word "unfair" can't describe the sad things that happen to us in life sometimes. It's just not fair. My friend came home from prison a broken man with a felony and a large scar on his face that he got from being cut with a prison shank, and mentally disturbed. I never heard what happened to him again because both of us had moved. But I know it didn't turn out well for him. May God bless him and all others who have faced troubles because of a mistake. He never wanted to hurt the man. All he wanted to do was go home from work.

He shouldn't of even been in the country. Authorities had advised him to stay out of the public eye. The police had intelligence that he was a marked men. Great player and human being. God Bless his soul.
