@@lulshield1800 in a way it’s true, because Atlético Nacional, the team Andres played for was owned by Pablo Escobar the big boss himself Going into the World Cup 1994 Colombia were clear favorites They had a magnificent run through the qualifying round Beating the likes of Argentina 5-0 etc. But once the tournament started idk what happened. Everything happening in Colombia followed them into WC Cartels betting money on them and sending threats to their families Forcing the coach to put the players they wanted It was a lot of pressure And that pressure made them lose that focus and it lead to this sadly

It's so sad that people can make a single mistake and their life is ruined. My friend who worked for UPS in the early 2000's in Brooklyn, NYC was a good guy, coming home late from work one night. He was approached by a guy with a knife who tried to rob and stab him. He tussled with the guy and gave the robber one good punch that knocked him clean out. The robber fell and hit his head on the concrete. My friend called the police and waited for them to arrive. They put the thief in an ambulance and took the knife as evidence. He was in a coma and died 4 days later from the brain injury. The police arrested my friend and he was sentenced to 17 years in prison. He lost everything, even his fiance. All of this for just protecting himself to not be robbed or stabbed by a lifelong criminal drug addict. This is the world we live in. The word "unfair" can't describe the sad things that happen to us in life sometimes. It's just not fair. My friend came home from prison a broken man with a felony and a large scar on his face that he got from being cut with a prison shank, and mentally disturbed. I never heard what happened to him again because both of us had moved. But I know it didn't turn out well for him. May God bless him and all others who have faced troubles because of a mistake. He never wanted to hurt the man. All he wanted to do was go home from work.

I remember being 12 years old and visiting my grandmother in Colombia watching this game live. To say this was a crushing blow is putting it lightly. The entire country wept. Then he was murdered and since then Colombia's soccer team has carried this tarnished history. There was lots of speculation around his murder and the simplest and most logical explanation was some cartel thugs who were deeply involved in illegal gambling where enraged over this mistake and they sought vengeance for their lost profits and even perhaps some national pride. Shameful. I hope Colombia beats Brazil tomorrow on the 4th of July 2014. I have my doubts but I also have my dreams. Vamos Colombia!

Andres should have been smarter. He knew Colombian's love for futbol and knew where he was living (Medellin) at the height of the drug madness. He should have never went to any club. If I were him, I would have left the country.

It was so sad. I actually came all the way to there to watch that game live in 1994, and a few days later I heard on the news that Escobar got murdered. R.I.P😥😥

I was at that game, I was 5 years old. It wasn't until I was older that I learned what happened. This day was one of my most memorable and earliest childhood experiences that I remember, it was such a happy day for me. Sad that it was an unfortunate day for Andres Escobar, that lead to him tragically murdered.

What I don't get is why Escobar went out in public eleven days after this happened. Considering the culture there at this time, at the very least he should have been in fear of being attacked by some idiot(s).

@@iliaspapakyriazis6889 I almost forgot what was my comment about. You misunderstood me...I never wanted to criticise Escobar, a football player whom I really respect. It was just an opinion that maybe it would have been a better ideea if he was more cautious those days. I don't think I am wrong with tht. Being cautious is always a good thing, in any subject, and being cautious in Columbia...in the 90s...in football...i think it is even a more important and better idea. Don't get me wrong again, I don't criticise Escobar (who am I to do that?). We cannot even know if he would have been killed even if he was cautious...who knows? I've seen thousands of times the Romania-Columbia match from 1994. I am a romanian and that was our best world cup. We won that game with 3-1. Every time I see that game, I can't stop thinking of Escobar, thinking how few weeks later one of those players was killed for an own goal...It was a shocking moment for the world and it still is. I don't know if you know, the best romanian football comentator retired from his job after that world cup because he said that he doesn't want to comment football anymore after the death of Escobar. So yes, in any corner of this world, we were shocked. That doesn t mean we should consider Escobar was brave for going out in public.
