Well we did start just before 9am on a Thursday. Everyone who would have used it earlier was probably already on the Metro. The parking lot certainly wasn’t empty, so I’m guessing ridership was better during rush hour!

Dropped my parents off there back in June for their train up to DC, didn't know they were shutting this one down this year. I was shocked at how old this place was too, figured we'd have something a little better in our area considering Ft. Eustis.
@29downtheline12 сағат бұрын
The old station was definitely showing its age! Interestingly, Amtrak also used to serve Lee Hall, which was probably a little more convenient to Ft Eustis!

"Bus stop / Metro station review" *doesn't buy a Dr. Pepper* literally unwatchable Great video, very similar to the Germantown-Shady Grove bus which I think is better than any of the "BRT" routes in the DMV
@29downthelineКүн бұрын
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s anywhere near the Leesburg Park & Ride where you can get a Dr Pepper (maybe at the soccer stadium concession stand during games, but I’m not sure). I would love to ride the Germantown bus at some point; it seems like a good route!

why so little footage of the train interior?
@29downtheline2 күн бұрын
This ride was on my way back from a week away from home, so I was quite tired (the tiredness shows a little in some of my narration as well). I do apologize for not showing more of the interior! This was in the earlier days of me making videos, so I think I’ve improved a bit since then!

When this station opened, the dirt plots right next to the tracks had trees and shrubs in them, but they proved to be a hassle to maintain.

Thank you for making the video, it was very well done. The Elizabeth River Ferry is something very special we have here in Tidewater. Sometimes when I go walking in the evening in Portsmouth, I would get on the Ferry to go over to Norfolk just to enjoy the air and the view or to continue my walk over to Town Point Park. I believe some of them Ferry's did have names other than just Elizabeth River Ferry #. When I was young, I am pretty sure there was a Pocahantas, but I might be wrong. I did find, when doing a quick look that there was recently a James C. Echols until 2016 - 17. It was sold, refurbished and now a ferry in Saint John, Canada.
@29downtheline6 күн бұрын
Thanks for the compliment; I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I didn’t know that any of the pedestrian ferries had names before. I also didn’t know that one of the older ones is now in Canada, so thanks for sharing! And if I were closer to the ferry, I’m sure I would use it more; it would be super easy to spend a few hours on the other side of the river!

Since I was a small child 55 years ago, I've always wondered how people are supposed to get from train to plane; now somebody at the city wondered the same thing. THANK YOU for covering mass transit in my hometown. America is so far behind more civilized countries. This station gives me a bit of hope that we'll begin to see better transportation in Hampton Roads. All we need is leadership for HRT who would roll up their sleeves and straighten out the mess. Absurd how many destination bus stops are inaccessible from one's origin stop, no matter how many days you allocate. The bus routes seem to have been planned under the influence of alcohol. And we still can't pay with a phone SMH. They were about to test app payments for bus rides Summer 2019, it was delayed for a year…and we know what happened then. I'll vote for you if you run for HRT Boss!
@29downtheline9 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I’m glad I got to be in Newport News when the station opened; it was really neat! I agree 100% that transportation around Hampton Roads needs to improve. I’m hoping it gets better soon (there are a few improvements coming at the end of October, but they’re not enough). I do have a few ideas of how I would improve HRT, and the need to transfer buses to get to popular destinations (like the train station) is definitely something I’d love to fix!

If I could make one change to the ferry, it would be to make Harbor Park a regular stop all year long. I live in Portsmouth and take Amtrak whenever I can, I'd love to be able to park at work in Olde Towne and take the ferry over to Harbor Park to catch the train. As it is now I could take the ferry to Waterside and walk a few blocks in the wrong direction to catch the Tide at MacArthur Center and ride that over to Harbor Park, but that is too many possible points of failure to potentially make me miss my train. So instead I pay the tunnel toll and drive to Harbor Park.
@29downtheline10 күн бұрын
I agree! Better service to Habor Park would be good. And for regular, non-game day service, they could rehabilitate one of the old piers right next to the Amtrak station!

When the majority of the riders have NOT paid a fare for their ride, watch the ride disappear... Even in socialist marxist cities there are budgets, and the services that are usually cut are the ones that lose the most money... It is what it is, whether you like it or not...
@29downtheline12 күн бұрын
Good points! Fare evasion is a huge problem. At least DC is realizing it doesn’t have infinite money to throw around. Hopefully that means they will better allocate it in the future and better enforce fare control.

Both are nice stations! I feel like Amtrak should’ve picked a different name for the Floridian, as the new Floridian doesn’t follow the route of the old Floridian. I think Capitol Star or Silver Limited would have been interesting!

I do; but much of the line is in its own right of way, and through downtown Norfolk I’ve never seen issues with traffic. They mostly run in their own dedicated lanes and have their own traffic signals so they can avoid conflicting car movements.
