If individuals are fortunate enough to not have to work, then volunteerism is a way to learn social skills, its a human experience as well.

As someone who has not been diagnosed, That still shares a lot of affinities with that Population... I think it needs to be said Tools and Direct experiences with trade skills benefit everybody. It wouod benefit ADHD kids too... Who are often brilliant; fast thinking, and just downright bored with the educational system as it has become so abstract and dissociated from reality

What an amazing discussion. I've read three of John Elder's books and two of Temple's. All three participants have tremendous insights. Much learned and very much enjoyed!

I love Temple Grandin. She's a no bs human being and all us "normal" (sic) ppl can learn a few things about acceptance and focus on things that matter and benefit all beings.

This wonderful conversation has brought up sooo much stuff. Brilliant. My father left my mother, brother n I when I was about 7. My mothers autism and the situation was simply over whelming for her (p.s. my father had some highly autistic behaviours - birds of a feather…). So, I had to learn to shop, clean house, look after my brother n make food as best I could - school did get somewhat sidelined. It wasn’t the best solution but it was an effective solution - the alternative would’ve been the “care” system and the separation of myself n my brother. So, shit happens n we all do our best. This was in the 70s, I hope and pray that there are now other, less damaging and more effective answers.

“I’ll proof read anything you have” - I had to laugh, I often make pencil corrections of misprints in books. Other aspects of this conversation that I recognised made me sob - but, our lives are bittersweet. It would be good to help autistic women have a better balance of the two.

Cannot thank you enough for this folks. Am female, 50+ n am now, after a “challenging” lifetime of mis-diagnosis, on the waiting list for an official diagnosis. There’s little info for humans in my group on the internet. So, these ladies are a delight to me - they make me feel welcome, far less isolated and, most importantly, give me hope for a better life - even if I only have 10 years left, they can be better! ❤

I do not understand the seeming avoidance of teaching these precious people, to me, the most obvious thing. This little thing made a huge, amazingly huge , difference in the life our 30 yr old , Aspie. It changed the response to him by others from the day we made this change. From the day we adopted him, at 2 years old. Letting your child “be themselves” does not include allowing them to visually display their “unusualness” in lack of personal hygiene and “weird” dress. Looking like their peers (to some degree) results in their being more spontaneously accepted & included. Then our child felt far more positively toward working on and using his newly learned skills and behaviors. Not being “judged & evaluated” before he could even walk over to them. Negative responses and immediate labeling then did not occur. There is always time to be concerned about individual “style”. Strange, greasy , smelly, kids , whether ASPIE or not, are not starting on level ground. They are instantly non approachable and made objects of bullying.

NO Child, anywhere, ever, should go to “public, government schools”! They stopped, a very long time ago, being places of education and are now indoctrination and moral destroying centers! What on earth was so “special” in the animation that should not be done in every single school? How can every child not be so valued and appreciated? Run, with your children, from every government “school” IF your goal is to live & protect them!

I was a late diagnosis. 36 years old. I'm sitting here in my shop working alone on a tire change listening to this on my Bluetooth speaker. It got to the cartoon part of the school advertisement and by the end of the cartoon I'm on my knees next to my tire stand crying. Even recognizing myself as part of a wider community since diagnosis, I have still felt like the same alien I've always been. I don't know why something so silly as an advertisement type cartoon audio would hit me so hard but I'm still sobbing.

Having autism is nothing to be ashamed about and it can be useful like Madeline used her tomboy bravery personality to save the king's crown from the thieves who framed her and temple grandin used her autism and engineering skills to make life better for farm animals.

A special school just for kids with autism and its named after temple grandin the autism rights activist and livestock expert. I think I really like that school that doesn't discriminate and autistic kids are being accepted and appreciated for who they are. I wish that all schools were accepting as the temple grandin school.

17:28 It would be rather nice to have a cup of coffee or a juice on a café while waiting for the airline to take its necessary time unloading the plane and loading the conveyor belt at pick-up. Maybe some local cuisine 😏 I rather like the pick-up lounge, but the thought of a hundred people standing about dumbfounded "When's the luggage coming?" - "Don't ask me. And I doubt the other 98 folks knows how long they'll be waiting for neither" ... just seems stupid. Rarely are there seats. People cramming up against the conveyor belt so I have to push my sweaty and tired body through their sweaty and tired bodies just to get my luggage. "Go away, sit down and have a cinnamon bun. You can charge your phone, hydrate, maybe blip your luggage ticket on your table's scanner to get your luggage directly to where you sit, so you don't have to get up mid coffee sip". Me I'm perfectly happy eating sushi while watching my bag go round and round until my baggage is taken away by personnel - That's when I gulp my wasabi and run after them! = D

I don't know if it's because I knew in my heart that my son would turn out to be high functioning, but I've continually thought about possible future careers. I would introduce subjects and activities that he'd show a glimmer of interest in. Most failed, but did impart bits of knowledge. Currently he's been in Civil Air Patrol, Air Force Auxillary for 2 years. Recently he won 3rd place in a 5 state region drone flying competition, without practice, and with purposly crashing to avoid the attention of winning. This is our current adventure, drone pilots license! He's only 14 and I hope he's found his niche!

A fascinating discussion. I’ve never known much about Asperger’s: but I now know enough to be convinced my father had Asperger’s. It explains so much of the relationship problems and rows between my parents, and my own problems with him. And it tells me something about myself.
