CC but in two parts, I could not do all 2 hours at one shot. I just heard you talking about how others lead a better life than you. I thought that about my life too, but now that I have two daughters I see life differently. They say the same thing, that their life is not as good as their friends until I point out all the things they get to do that their friends do not. Now when I look back, I lived a dream life as a child. You need to take a dispassionate view of yourself. I envy your lifestyle! I am not well off but certainly not poor either. I love staying at lower cost hotels because if I stay at a nice hotel, I don't want to leave the hotel, just as you said!! If that is the case, then why travel!?! Just stay in a nice hotel in your hometown. My best memories are when I had the least amount of money because life was simple! Even those with more means should live more frugally and donate the money they save to a charity, they would be much happier in life.

Do they have any Eco-friendly (i.e. chemical free) laundry detergents that are reasonably priced? I have never tried so I am not sure if they work very well and are much more expensive. I have heard baking soda and a squeeze of lemon works but have never tried that either. I am sure on lightly soiled clothing it works but my clothes are seldom lightly soiled!

@@danielboucher2991 I've been trying to figure this out for quite a while now. And I have actually used Perplexity a lot, and I've gotten a lot of useful information. 😀 However, some key steps are missing in all the instructions. The issue is that the GoPro Quik app can't schedule a live stream in advance. It doesn't have that ability. The only option with a GoPro and the GoPro app is to go live instantly. In order to schedule a live stream and send out notifications, you have to start with KZbin studio on a laptop or desktop browser. You set up a scheduled live stream in KZbin Studio, and then you somehow connect the live stream from your GoPro to that scheduled live stream. But there are two problems with that at the moment. One is that I haven't found any information about how you connect the two. I've done a bunch of testing and it never works. I just end up with two live streams, and the GoPro live stream has nothing to do with the one I scheduled on KZbin Studio. I don't know how to connect them. The other problem is that you need a laptop or desktop computer to do this. And my laptop died two or three nights ago. It won't turn on anymore, so I'm limited to just my smartphone at the moment. Until I get it repaired or acquire a new laptop, I'm kind of stuck. I realized yesterday, however, that you can actually force KZbin on your smartphone to emulate a desktop mode. And then you have access to the live stream features. I haven't had the opportunity to fully try that out yet. A difficulty with that is KZbin in desktop mode on a smartphone is almost impossible to read. The text is minuscule and the buttons and menus are hard to see. There's always something to figure out or fight through. 🤪

@@thaimaxcan I think you definitely need two screens. And that is what I did for this live stream. I used one smartphone to run the live stream, and then I was using a second smartphone to see any comments or questions. That worked out well this time. Unfortunately, as you pointed out, this particular live stream froze up a lot. All my other testing live streams worked much better. But this time, I kept losing the connection. Whenever I looked down at my live stream smartphone, it would say "Connection Lost" and there would be a spinning wheel while it tried to reestablish a connection. That happened many times. Sometimes I noticed it and sometimes I didn't. And I don't know what the problem was exactly. It could be that my hotel's Wi-Fi just wasn't working well that morning. Or it could be the problem with the GoPro app or the GoPro itself. Hopefully that was a rare occurrence, and it won't happen in the future.

This was basically a test of the technology for me. That's why I put it on the Behind the Scenes channel. I had no idea if it would even work at all. It's the very first time I did a live stream outside using a Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone. In fact, it was only the second live stream in my life. The first one was in the morning when I recorded a BTS video live in my hotel room. And it took me several days and lots of help from an expert to just figure out the absolute basics of doing even that. So, I wanted to first do a live stream outside like this on the Behind the Scenes channel just to make sure everything is working. And since this one worked out quite well, I will certainly do future live streams like this one on my main Planet Doug channel. I just wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing before I tried it. So far, I have no idea how to schedule a live stream for a time in the future. And I have no idea how to send out or control notifications. I'm still trying to figure all of that out. Right now, I'm using the GoPro Quik app. It's the only way to do a live stream with a GoPro that I can see. And it is very simplistic. There's a button to start the live stream and a button to end it. Beyond that, I can't set a scheduled time and I can't do anything about notifications. As far as I can tell, to schedule a live stream and have notifications sent out in advance, you have to do it in KZbin itself. And then you have to somehow connect your GoPro to that pre-set live stream, but I have no clue how to do any of that or if it's even possible. I plan to do another live stream this morning as I go out for lunch, and it will be on the main Planet Doug channel. At least I hope it will be. 🙂 Unfortunately, I don't know how to set it up in advance. And it's even more challenging right now because my laptop died the day before yesterday. I have to do everything on my smartphone right now, and some of the controls are more limited using mobile apps. Anyway, we will see how walk-and-talk live stream number two works out this morning.

On the topic of tourism, you are right about the population point plus increase of wealth with the booming middle income and above. Back when there was 4bil people on earth, probably 1% could travel a few times a year for example and now we are probably talking about 5% of 8bil people so that's a huge jump in that respect. I've been getting a lot of news from Japan as well and its going to be expensive going there soon due to dual pricing and increased prices for tourist passes and etc. For example the rail pass has literally doubled which is quite crazy and yes the restaurant dual menu pricing too. As you said, they have a solid reasoning behind it but sadly not every traveler to Japan comes from those countries with very strong currency and I know friends who saved up years so they can visit Japan.
@planetdougbehindthescenes
@planetdougbehindthescenes Ай бұрын
Good observation. I don't have any numbers or statistics in my head about how many more people have money to travel these days or how much cheaper it is to travel now as opposed to decades ago. I'm just speaking from personal observation and how it feels. It first struck me many years ago when I was in the Philippines and even there the usual backpacker accommodation seemed to be disappearing. I guess there was no demand for it because foreign visitors were spending more and there were far more Filipinos taking trips themselves inside the Philippines and they wanted comfort and luxury because this was their annual holiday. They wanted air conditioning and swimming pools and nice rooms. I felt very much in the minority as I rode my bike around looking for low budget hotels and bungalows. They didn't seem to exist in the same number anymore. There was no demand for them. And since then I've seen the same pattern everywhere. And the situation in Europe seems to be out of control with so many tourists in the popular places that they start to feel like they outnumber the local people. That's crazy.

In this long BTS video, I didn't even talk about any Planet Doug excursions at all. I could have segued into that topic and spoken for another couple of hours. But even I knew this was getting pretty ridiculous and I told myself to stop talking. 😆 And in this case, I recorded this over two days. And I did some recording in the morning and then I had lunch and I came back and did some more and then I did the same thing the next morning and afternoon. I just happen to have a list of things I wanted to talk about and I figured I might as well burn through them all.

Doug, you need to start putting intermissions in these things. Re: Gmail. In my quest for the digital singularity I learned that each Gmail address IS a Google account, which you probably know by now. You can't have Gmail without an account, and you can't have more than one email address for any Google account. It's confusing and it's one of those things that once it's set up and works you tend to forget about it--and how you did it--until it breaks and you have to do it again.

@planetdougbehindthescenes Ай бұрын
I know exactly what you mean. I've done so many things over the last few years that took a great deal of research and knowledge and patience and time. But it's something you only have to do once, so I don't even remember how I did it. And if it ever breaks and I have to fix it or do it again, it becomes a real problem. I can't remember what I did the first time so I have to do all the research all over again. In this case, I went ahead and just created this new Planet Doug Life Gmail address. I didn't really know what I was doing, so I just followed what seemed to be the logical steps. And now that it's done I can't shake the feeling that I did everything wrong. I'm worried that this is going to cause big problems in the future because Google now keeps asking me to do things to connect these two Google accounts on my various devices and I really don't know what is going on. I'm sure it's all going to end up in a giant disaster, but we shall see.

It wouldn't be hard to reach 5 hours. I could talk for 5 hours relatively easily assuming my voice held out. All of my BTS videos could be 5 hours long if I thought that made any sense. I think obviously it makes no sense to post a single video like this that is this long, but but perhaps like Forrest Gump, "I just felt like running." Though in my case it was talking... I would prefer not to be so negative. Who wouldn't? 😁 But that would require anything to do with technology to actually work and not turn into a problem requiring hours to fix and figure out. And I think I would be less negative if I had the sense that all of the endless hours I pour into technology troubleshooting actually had an effect. But it all seems to be a giant waste of time because nothing ever gets fixed, and I never manage to make any progress in terms of learning how things work. There is the classic expression of taking one step forward but two steps back. But the technological gravity on Planet Doug is such that I seem to take zero steps forward and 187 steps back every day. The last few days have been a fairly good example of that. I've been working on doing a live stream. And I have spent hours every day trying to figure out how to do a live stream, but nothing I do ever works or makes any sense and no matter how much I read and how many KZbin tutorials I watch, I don't make any progress. Nothing makes any sense to me. And just when I thought I had figured out a couple of things and I was going to do a live stream, last night, my MacBook made a loud popping sound, shut off, and is now completely unresponsive. It is basically broken and won't turn on, so the world of Planet Doug has ground to a halt with yet another huge problem to try to fix. To be honest, considering everything going on, and how technology has ground me to dust, I feel like I'm relatively good-natured about it all. It is a miracle that I'm still in the game swinging for the fences. I might even do a live stream this morning with just my GoPro and a smartphone and see what happens. What I wanted to do is schedule a live stream so people know it's coming, but no matter how many hours I spent trying to figure that out I don't know how to do it. All I can do is just start the live stream and hope it's working. 😂

I know that there are businesses like that out there. They've been around forever. I've actually seen a bunch of news stories and KZbin videos about them lately and how the technology of these "click farms" has become more advanced. There was a big exposé in a magazine recently including photographs of these click farms showing entire walls of hundreds of smartphones wired together and all of them being controlled by one person sitting at a workstation fulfilling orders for people in terms of clicks and views and comments written by bots. And the story went on to say that even these were outmoded. The more advanced system uses just the guts of a smartphone plugged into a grid so they can have even more of them jammed into smaller spaces. I guess whenever there is a chance of making money, someone will figure out a way to cheat. I shudder to think what AI is going to do to KZbin and everything else. I'm already seeing the effects as the quality of content on KZbin degrades with obvious AI-generated clickbait nonsense.

I've been thinking about that quite a bit over the years that I've been posting videos. As I talked about somewhere in a BTS video, I fully planned to shoot and upload that type of video during my time in Vietnam. I was going to make shorter videos of the more typical KZbin style. That was the plan. But as soon as I left for the airport to fly to Vietnam, I hit the record button on my GoPro and just started filming in the exact same way and I ended up with a whole bunch of videos that were over an hour long. I just couldn't help it. And now I'm paying the price because half my time in Vietnam has to be devoted to editing the super-long videos I shot in the first half. That wasn't how things were supposed to work out. 😂 I really do struggle with that. I see the success of travel vloggers with those short videos, and I feel like I want to emulate them. But at the same time, that style doesn't come naturally to me. But who knows? Maybe over the next 5 years I'll finally figure out this KZbin business. 🤣

Yes, that's a classic episode. I've heard Jerry and Larry talk about it in interviews over the years because when they submitted the script to the network executives, the executives all hated it. They all pointed out that nothing happens in the episode. All they do is wait for a table at the restaurant and they never even get a table. And the network executives didn't understand how this could be entertaining. Yet it continues to be one of the most popular and talked-about episodes of the whole series. And I guess its popularity comes from the fact that we can all relate to it. We all find ourselves in those situations, as I did while waiting for my boat to the floating market. I guess I was better off than in the Seinfeld episode because after being told many times to just wait 5-10 minutes, I did eventually get on a boat to the floating market and had an interesting experience. The Flow Travelers seem to be still working hard. I just checked their channel, and they have moved on to India. And their first video from India follows the pattern that I noticed. They seem to have done everything right in terms of KZbin strategy. They're in an exotic location. The video is about riding a train to Varanasi. You can't get any more exotic than that, and they put in a title and thumbnail that implies everything is really crazy and amazing and exciting. The video is quite short, so that should appeal to viewers as well. They took the time to make a short intro with clips and highlights and music from India. Yet, in 17 hours, it has received only 39 views. That's a bit of a puzzle. Considering they are doing everything "right" you'd think it would be more popular than that. As for the Samsung tags, I think having one or two is a good idea if not a great one. It could really save a person a lot of trouble.

@planetdougbehindthescenes
@planetdougbehindthescenes Ай бұрын
Yes, I guess that is a form of marketing. At the time, though, I didn't think of it as marketing. I just thought of it as efficiency. I made my first name card by hand when all I had was a website called The Cycling Canadian. That was years before I shot any video or had a KZbin channel. I remember telling you this story before: I used a word processing program (at an Internet cafe), and I made a single sheet of paper with homemade name cards on it. And then I would make 30 or 40 photocopies of it and cut all the cards out with a pair of scissors (over coffee, of course). Every time I ran out of cards, I would just photocopy more sheets and manually cut them out by hand. And I did that because people would ask me for the name of my website, and then I would have to write it out for them on paper. (This was also long before I even had a smartphone.) And it took so long to do. It was very annoying. So I made the cards so I could just hand them the card instead of writing out the name over and over. And I do the same thing now with the KZbin channel. It's so much easier to just give someone a card rather then wait for them to write it down on their smartphone or look up the channel on KZbin. So when I made the cards, I wasn't thinking about marketing at all. I was just thinking about saving time. You know how I love systems and organization. 😁 When I got the new Planet Doug cards made in Port Dickson, I considered also getting stickers. I've always loved the idea of stickers. And if I had gotten stickers, that would have been pure marketing. I would have put those stickers on doors and bulletin boards or anywhere else you saw these things. I always liked to see the big displays of stickers from expeditions going around the world or around Thailand by motorcycle etc. I don't think anyone is going to get a lot of exposure through a random sticker, but it would be fun. I think I ended up not getting the stickers because they were quite expensive. By the way the current promotion currently has these results: Cost: $3.73 Impressions: 2,940 Views: 105 New Subscribers: 2

Everything there eventually made sense. I think on my first visit, they were unusually busy. It was extremely crowded and chaotic. And that's why I was kind of forgotten. They had large tour groups that they had to take care of. And me just standing there or sitting there by myself, I kind of got lost in the shuffle. But on my next visit, they noticed me right away. And they indicated to me that I should just sit down anywhere. And then a server came over to me right away to take my order. They entered my order onto a handheld device and then they placed a little plastic triangle on my table with a number on it. And when my meal was ready, it was brought directly to me. And then to pay, you could call someone over, or you just bring your little plastic triangle over to the cash register. They enter your number into the system, and then you pay them. So, they did have a very organized system. I just happened to go there on a crazy busy day the first time. I've been back multiple times since then, and everything has gone very smoothly.

So far, I've had very good luck with everything. Everything has continued to be punctual and well organized. 👍

@@planetdougbehindthescenes good to know, us Vietnamese actually have a reputation of being unpunctual. Like in a wedding, peoples are invited at 18:00 but that’s because they are expected to be there at 19:00, the starting of the ceremony.

43:14 true, there is no market there any more as a floating market is no longer needed. We both went there too late.

I still enjoyed the trip, though. As I think I said in this BTS video, you just have to shift your perspective. It's not really a trip to a floating market anymore. It's a boat ride up the river to have breakfast and coffee. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's fun and worth doing. There just isn't any kind of a real local floating market anymore.

I have a USB C docking station that uses one of the ports and gives me a ton of extra ports and it allows me to charge from it as well. That way I have one device and everything connects to it and I don't have to worry about juggling dongles and things like that.

I do the same thing in general. When the laptop first came into my life, it came with a slim docking station that clipped directly to the edge of the computer. It provided 2 USB-C ports, 2 USB-A ports, a microSD card reader, and an SD card reader. It worked well, but it eventually burned out and stopped working. I went shopping for a replacement, but I couldn't find the same type. But I eventually bought quite an expensive hub that had all the same ports and memory card readers. And that's what I use now. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Both built-in memory card readers are extremely slow for some reason. They max out at 18 megabytes per second which makes them completely useless for me. So even when I use this hub, I still have to use a second card reader that plugs directly into a USB-C port. Luckily, I can route power directly through the hub through one of the USBC ports. So I managed to make it work, but it is fairly complicated and all of the hub ports are still quite slow. I assume it has something to do with the laptop being a MacBook with Thunderbolt ports and the various cables and hubs and card readers that I use can't take advantage of the high speed of the Thunderbolt and use some kind of slower USB-C protocol. Anyway, it all remains a bit complicated. 😁

@@planetdougbehindthescenes I'm not a Mac user, so I haven't run into the same issues thankfully. I had to buy the one I have because the expensive one from work was a piece of hot garbage and it kept on flaking out. When I lost that job, I shipped back their dock and started to use this one on my own system. It was fairly cheap off of Amazon, but it does what I need. If we ever bump into each other on these travels, you can see if it works for you. I have a new workflow now and I really don't use it much. If it can be of use to you, then I would happily let you have it.

i am so noise sensitive and couldn’t handle those kind of situations. i would have called the front desk
@planetdougbehindthescenes
@planetdougbehindthescenes Ай бұрын
I'm also extremely sensitive to noise, but I guess I've become relatively accustomed to it. I simply assume there will be a certain level of noise: slamming of doors and loud conversation and laughter in the hallways and often construction and jackhammers, etc. That usually comes with the territory in low budget hotels. It seems to be a normal part of life here and people just accept it. So I simply try to accept it and depend on ear plugs. This screaming child was far outside the norms, even for me, which led me to the extreme of actually knocking on the door and inquiring if everything was okay. 😃 I also find that my presence in one of these hotels is often a much bigger deal than I realize. And any action I might take tends to have a big impact, much bigger than I expect. So I tend to moderate my behavior. In any event, there is no phone or actual front desk to call. It's not really that kind of hotel. There's generally no one around except for an older woman that hangs out in the lobby, and she doesn't speak any English. I think if I tried to speak to her about something like this, I would give the poor woman a heart attack. 😅

1:36:08 can’t get on the bus there I think. It’s the end of the line.
@planetdougbehindthescenes
@planetdougbehindthescenes Ай бұрын
You're right. I figured that out eventually. Technically, that was the end of the line. And then the bus goes to the back into the actual bus station parking area. And there it waits for passengers to get on. I eventually went to the back and walked around until I found the area where all the city buses were parked. And then I was able to get on the bus. I think it was even the same bus with the same driver. 😁

I suspect from your comments that the AK bullets were reloaded with lower amount of powder. Hence the lack of recoil against your shoulder and multiple jamming of the weapon. And they save money. As for KZbin you can pixel out the weapon image in your. video.
@planetdougbehindthescenes
@planetdougbehindthescenes Ай бұрын
That makes sense. They can save money by using less gunpowder. And that won't matter to tourists like me. I guess I was thinking that they go to the store and buy boxes of bullets. I have no experience with guns really. But it makes more sense perhaps that they load their own bullets with gunpowder. Good suggestion about pixelating out the gun. Maybe I'll try that.

Was not aware of the thumbnail test so thanks, will look out for it. Regarding your 2 thunderbolt ports, I have same on my MacBook Air so plug my Macbook power cable directly into a UGreen 7in1 hub (which also has 2x USBa/c ports + card reader hdmi etc) and the other thunderbolt port I plug my Samsung T7 1TB drive into and edit on that vs my Mac SSD and it's zippy fast (might solve your issue from prev PDBTS?). Regarding hotels. I usually look on Airbnb or FB Marketplace, preferably for a cheap n cheerful condo/apt/room, usually less than a hotel over 30 days, much more comfort plus can cook and some have gym/pool to use too. Then go around filming, usually say 4-6 episodes and go back and edit in comfort enjoying a relatively 'normal' life for 4-6 weeks editing/uploading. Then move along to next location and rinse/repeat. Might not work for you but really helps keep me healthier and happier. There's one on FB now called 'Binh Thanh district - Studio for rent - Rental price 6,5 million per month' CAD $350 plus others, maybe ask if they'll do 1 month? I lost my GoPro and kinda glad I did as I got an AcePro and LOVE it. It practically sees in the dark, HDR is excellent, can pause/restart filming, mark sections to hilight and on and on. I also got a DJI Mic 2 (bluetooth one, no wires) as it now works with AcePro in last software update. Anyways, just my thoughts. Love your behind the scenes, also love your slow travel vids, so keep doing you. Cheers, STL

Thank you about tour bookings. I will book with SST travel direct when I visit. I think when your friend donor book he use a general booking site then they are brookers to different tour companies.
@planetdougbehindthescenes
@planetdougbehindthescenes Ай бұрын
That seems to be how it works. The booking was made through the Klook app, and I've noticed that when you look at the tours on Klook, it doesn't say anywhere what the name of the actual tour company is. At least I couldn't find it. So when you book a tour through the app, you have no idea what tour company you are going to be going with. That seems odd to me, but I guess that's how it works. I guess if you know what tour company you want to use, you could just go directly to the company office. I had a good experience with SST.
