Teachers are not “the problem.” However, of all the factors that affect student outcomes, the quality of the teacher remains the number one factor. Like you, I know that in high school, it is extremely difficult to overcome learning gaps caused by a lack of fundamental literacy skills, but nevertheless we have to try. I think your frustration is common and this is becoming a nationwide problem that some schools are trying to address earlier on in students’ schooling (new science of reading training, etc). I know you are having a positive impact on the skills of your students! 👍

As a mermaid and a supersonic shark don't exist this is a pointless question and therefore I would refuse to provide an answer. As I would with any other similar stupid questions. I've yet to see an ice breaker activity that wasn't pointless so I don't understand why teachers persist in using them. I simply refuse to divulge anything about myself and/or my likes and dislikes. I appreciate this frustrates teachers, but to be honest this sort of stuff is no one else's business.

It's okay if that is your personal choice. Icebreakers are not usually forced, and hopefully aren't introduced as "icebreakers." The cringe of that word, I get it. Many people do enjoy using their imaginations and getting figurative. Creating opportunities for various forms of open communication is important for the dynamic/comfortability of the room. Also, it beats academic discourse for a period of time. I will keep your feedback stored for my next icebreaker ideas video. I hope you reconsider disclosing a bit of your personality with others. You might enjoy the outcome. Thanks for your feedback.

Some, not all, teachers are the problem. Yelling at students and embarrassing them in front of the class can make them not want to participate in their class as much.

Those type of teachers are the exception not the norm. However, all the things she mentioned in her video are the norm...unfortunately. The students who pay attention, read well, give effort, and show respect are becoming the outliers.

I don’t know what grade you teach, so I would just throw out there that obvious this will not work for all grades! Based on my experience I think it has a great shot at working k-6th (in my memory 6th was still very manipulatable and we were very reward driven). I think once you hit 7th+ it’ll be pretty hard to muster up enough care in the challenge, hah

I use it in high school. The problem with KZbin shorts is it only allows for 30 seconds of details. I might call "rapid fire questions" a challenge to see if everyone can answer 1 question as quickly as possible. If someone takes too long to answer, they failed the challenge. Or I will choose a letter and ask everyone to name a word related to a topic. We will count how many students got through it and try again the next day. It def works at high levels, you just have to change it up. Anything gets boring if it is overdone.

This is year 7 for me and I’ve taught both. I’m currently teaching middle school and as soon as I can, I’m transferring back to the high schools. I teach math and computer science (I’ve taught AP before, too.) Their behaviors are too much in middle school for me, especially since I’m more introverted. My days teaching high school were much more quiet. I related more to high schoolers, too.

She is doing her job, to connect with her students and foster relationships. You do that by being creative, interesting, and sometimes just downright kooky. I should know because I’m a Special Education English and Social Studies teacher. When I do ‘weird’, my students are engaged and learning. Kudos to Alexa for being an inspiration to her students and other teachers as well!

Hi Alexa! Loving your videos. I am a K-8 teacher taking on my first middle school position in 15 years (7th self-contained). Plus I'm starting for second quarter. I'm like you a lot energetically but am concerned that I should be more restrained at the beginning. What is the wisdom with energy? (My students have had subs all during first quarter btw)

After my first year, when I was literally falling asleep grading and/or lesson planning, I promised myself I would no longer work outside my contract hours. Now, the only time I work outside my contract hours is when I'm getting my classroom ready for the new year and when I'm doing things for the National Honor Society, which I'm paid a stipend to do. I teach grades 7-12 ELA. I find ways to assess without having to grade a ton of work. Projects and essays take longer to grade, so they may not get those grades back for a week. I'm not required to do detailed lesson plans, so I give lesson overviews with the state standards and what I'm doing to assess learning. I'm not paid enough to kill myself for this profession.

Increasing response rates (Hattie/Marzano) can be tough. I personally like using “wheel of names.” Many students are self conscious about their own reading level or simply don’t want to read in front of others. It’s been a while - I hope your channel is doing well!
@teachingwithalexa
@teachingwithalexa Ай бұрын
I like wheel names too, but not on the daily. It can get "played out" and almost feel elementary. BUT, all of those tools work in moderation. Right now we've been pulling names from a "spooky cauldron." Lol. Hope all is well!
